What a lovely treat to stay here! Beautiful location, gorgeous views, delicious food and very friendly staff. Family room was large with comfortable beds, sofa and armchair. Definitely recommend! Moffat itself was very pretty. Most eateries were full, so book in advance!

So glad we found this little gem.

Three of us stayed for one night ( in 2 rooms ) en route up to The Highlands. Found the hotel on Booking.com and checking in was very straightforward. The Hartfell is tucked away from the main town centre up some narrow streets but once there you will find a total gem of a place. The rooms are very homely and beds are lovely and comfortable. The rural settings around are tranquil , parking is available in a small car park at the front and there is more available on the road itself. The hosts are so welcoming and friendly. The unique selling point of this hotel is its small restaurant . The food is very reasonably priced and the standard is amazing. Breakfasts are lovely too. Room prices are very good too. Had a lovely walk in the morning before breakfast, there are various trails through woodland with beautiful views. When we’re up this way again we’d love to come back:

This is the second time we have stayed and eaten here, and it definitely won't be the last. Everything is perfect - the welcome, the setting, the room, the service and the breakfast - all details are carefully thought through, and sadly in these Covid times, that is more important than ever. Dinner is beautifully cooked and presented, and is ridiculously good value. Very highly recommended.

Wonderful Dining experience

This restaurant made our holiday during Covid. We usually have three weeks in Thailand but were reluctantly staying in Moffat for a week. We did some research and Lime House appeared to be the best. It is the best so much so that we booked another night before finishing our starters. The food was delicious both nights and the suggested by the host was fabulous, and very reasonably priced. We will definitely return if in the area again. Thank you for two great evenings.

Another Delightful Visit.

We have stayed at Hartfell House and dined in the Limetree Restaurant on more than 30 occasions over the years. The owners Rob & Mhairi Ash are amiable, smiling, welcoming and caring and are very keen to please all their guests. Rooms are large and have excellent quality beds for a good night’s sleep. Covid regulations and social distancing in the elegant dining room were meticulously observed and the entire place was spotless. Chef Matt Seddon presides in the Limetree Restaurant and is an innovative and precise cook offering three choices at each of three courses. Alpha starters included a superbly moist risotto of tiny courgettes with mint and a chunk of chargrilled tuna and a salad of wild boar gammon with a well made celeriac remoulade. Main dishes were breast of Barbary Duck with black pudding, spanking fresh fillet of cod and a Parmesan and asparagus tart. A chargrilled ribeye steak is offered at a £5 supplement but was too new and could have benefited from longer ageing since, despite a well made pink peppercorn sauce, it was pretty sinewy & lacked flavour. Two courses cost £26 and desserts are £7 extra for those with larger appetites. Breakfasts are cooked by owner Rob and offer a good choice of dishes all of which are served pipingly hot….not always the case in lesser establishments. Hartfell is only 5 minutes from the motorway and is an ideal place to stay and dine whether heading north or south. We recommend it unreservedly and wish Rob & Mhairi great success ….what lovely hosts they are.
