Always Wonderful

We have stayed at the George often since it’s opening. It is situated in a beautiful Georgian mansion in Montclair. The design aesthetic is impeccable. The rooms don’t have numbers but names: and each room is decorated with portraits of the name: Duke, George etc. It is a charming touch. The hotel is impeccably maintained and the staff is completely accommodating in every way. Very comfortable beds, terrific showers, high end amenities and great style. The public rooms are chic and welcoming. It is perfectly situated in Montclair near all restaurants and services. We are always so delighted to pull up to The George for our stay.

Fawlty Towers

The George gets two stars for being a good example of adaptive reuse of an existing structure. However, our stay there was a long series of disappointments. Upon our arrival, we had just completed an long arduous drive and were looking forward to the promised nightly wine and cheese reception. We were informed on check-in that they had booked a private party that evening, and the common areas were closed to guests due to that booking. How fortunate for the hotel to be able to book the same space both for a private event and as a guest amenity; how unfortunate for us that it was off-limits to us. We had booked a “junior suite”, based on photographs on the hotel’s website showing ample seating area, with a couch, two armchairs, and a desk and chair. The actuality, however, was somewhat different - no desk (nor even a table), and exactly one chair. I suppose the second guest in the room could go sit on the toilet. The website also claimed a “kitchenette” in the room. If you intend to make any use of this, bring your own microwave, dishes, glasses, and utensils (and something to put them in because, no drawers), because all that was supplied was a refrigerator and a nespresso. The only reason we could even make a cup of tea was because we had the presence of mind to bring our own tea kettle, and even then had to go down to the breakfast room to get a cup (!). Ah, the breakfast room. The hotel, at the time of our stay, had a policy that all guests had to remain masked when in the common areas - perhaps a sensible precaution exhibiting concern for their staff. Would that the same level of concern extended to guests. In the breakfast room, all the tables were pushed together into one long common table shared by all guests, who of course had to unmask to eat, including a number of very active kids, and even dogs (does Montclair not have a public health department?). The young staff seemed to be trying hard to keep up, but it seemed clear to us that they were stretched thin. There did not seem to be dedicated staff for the breakfast area (which, by the way, was al la carte, with guests required to maintain their own accounting). The one small coffeemaker (the same model I have at home) was grossly inadequate for the crowd and usually empty. There were other shortcomings, but you get the picture. Of course, the standard reply to such a litany would be “if you had but asked, we would have been able to do something”, and in some particulars we did. But honestly, should we have to call the front desk and ask “could you please send up the rest of our furnishings?”. Or, “please change your policies and increase your staffing?”. We were proffered a discount and a free breakfast, but what we really wanted was to pay for and receive a pleasant stay in a well-equipped facility.

Bait and switch, not at all what I expected. Although the bed was comfy

My husband and I booked a two night stay at the George this past weekend. We decided to go all out and book a Junior suite. Two of the reasons we decided on the Junior suite were the expanded seating area and the desk that they talked about in the room description. The room we got did not in any way resemble the junior suite in their photo. One chair, no desk. Basically if you go to their website and look at the photo of the king bed room that’s what we had but with only one chair. Needless to say we were not pleased. When we talked to the person at the check in desk, she tried to convince us that we had a junior suite. It was total BS. Besides not getting the room we paid for, the other things that bothered me were just little things you always find in hotels. No hooks on in the bathroom to hang a robe. No grab bars in the shower, and the shower floor is slippery when wet and really slippery when soapy. This is also a hotel where you pay $400 a night. When you go down for continental breakfast, you are charged $4 for a croissant or a muffin. That really bugged me. I have stayed in lots of hotels all over the place, many of them boutique hotels. None have ever charged me for a continental breakfast. It seemed like a little nickel and dime kind of thing to do. That said the bed was terrific. It was very comfortable. Next time I go to Montclair, I’m finding another place to stay.

Pretty Room, Amazing Service

Reviewed 19 may, 2021

My gentleman friend brought me to the George for my birthday. The room was very nice - the shampoos, soap, and lotion had that little extra bit of luxury that made the stay extra special. The mini fridge was a Smeg - both beautiful aesthetically and really effective at cooling. There was a modern industrial aesthetic with a little extra softness that I found charming. But what really sets the George apart is the service, which was just outstanding. Even with COVID, they played a huge part in giving me one of the beat birthdays I have had in years. Here’s the thank-you I sent the staff after our wonderful stay. Dear Ariana, I just wanted to offer you a HUGE thank you for the way you and Erika took such great care of us when we stayed at the George for my birthday. Bringing wine glasses and corkscrews to the room was thoughtful, but opening the dining room for us and setting up the meal my friend ordered for an intimate tête-à-tête was just wonderful. I had just been lamenting that COVID had ruined nice meals out - but, thanks to you, I got to enjoy a wonderful birthday dinner. And then, when he asked for your help with managing dessert, you somehow procured a delicious and beautiful cheesecake - my favorite! - in just a few hours. My friend let me peek behind the curtain of how he was able to give me such a beautiful birthday experience. You and Erika were a huge part of it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Nice Ambiance

Reviewed 7 march, 2021

The George is a lovely inn and provides a charming alternative to a more routine hotel atmosphere - charming in regard to the overall look that manages to combine the elegance of a British inn with the charm of a stateside B&B. However, due to the current pandemic, while the rates remain on the high end, the amenities that generally accompany a B&B are currently not provided, a fact that the establishment makes known at booking. While we were told there are espresso makers in the rooms - that could be characterized by ours as snug at best - these were unaccompanied by any embellishments to take off the rather bitter flavor of this unique morning beverage. Additionally, the coffee maker we were told was available for use by guests in the basement dining area was also a more unusual design that did not have instructions; had it not been for another guest that had demonstrated it one morning I'd have been at a loss as to how to program it. The next two mornings when I was better prepared, it was unavailable as the room had been set up for a wedding. Fortunately, there was a clerk at reception who offered to brew a cup in the back office for me. What would truly be helpful is - as another guest suggested - is to have a local coffee shop engaged to deliver or set up some ready to serve items, or barring that, have directions and hours of local establishments within easy walking distance. We learned of one which we went to one morning only to find it was closed on Tuesdays upon arriving there. Aside from these issues, most staff were very friendly and helpful - especially Erica who was especially outgoing to our granddaughter, the main reason for our trip in the first place!
