Surprised and Happy

So.. after reviewing some of the reviews on here I went ahead and chose this place as it was on the hip strip. It’s an older but very nice and unkept resort. They did day and nightly entertainment to keep us busy as there was a curfew going on with Covid restrictions. People complained about the dining but I had zero problems with my experience. I was served all meals by courteous respectful waiters. They were on top of the game with temperature checking and hand sanitizer every time you touch anything or go into the restaurant. The food was pretty good to be honest. The grill during the lunch time was good. The dinner at night was good. Great soups. The seafood and steaks amazing. The jerk chicken at the grill is best. The way the food was presented was artistry. As for the rooms, clean and pretty. All the rooms are ocean front with balcony’s so watching the sun set was amazing. The shower head was amazing. It did flood my bathroom but I rigged it to where it was minimized. The ac was cold and blasting. The bed was comfy. The beach clean and pretty. The pools immaculate. This was a great stay for 5 days.
Lovely week in the sun

Returned last week from Cornwall Beach. View of the pool and sea from the balcony breathtaking. I can honestly say I felt so safe with the Covid precautions strictly adhered to. Entertainers and beach and security staff wearing masks all the time. Restaurants temp check prior to sitting...hand sanitizer readily available. All staff wearing their masks and still smiling...despite the heat. Service was wonderful. Check in quick and easy. Smiles from all the kitchen/wait/housekeeping staff. The rooms basic but very clean. The shower is large and wonderful. The bed and pillows sooo comfortable. Lovely coffee bar on second floor. The evening shows were great. The beach lovely...plenty of loungers and shade. The pool amazing...although I wasn't it it as the sea was too inviting. The snack bar my favourite lunch spot. cheeseburger and fries and a cold drink. The buffet food was okay...sometimes not as hot as I would have liked...but if you go hungry you only have yourself to blame.
So many friendly staff. Will definitely be returning.!!!
Covid testing on site...$150 US for PCR to return to Canada. Results next day.

Great Vibe at Cornwall Beach!

My daughter and are just back from a wonderful vacation at the Royal Decameron Cornwall Beach! We chose the Cornwall because of its smaller size (146 rooms) and it’s close proximity to the airport (6 minute drive). Every room has a beach and pool view with a balcony, such a great design. We were able to check in early which was a nice suprise (hotels was not at full capacity due to Covid). The rooms are clean and bright with a nice big glass shower. Air conditioning was nice and cold and worked perfectly.
The beach is AMAZING! The water is so clear and beautiful. No vendors allowed which is very much appreciated. There will be the odd guy passing through but no big deal, we enjoyed chatting with him. There are kayaks you can use and a small sailboat/mini catamaran that one of the water sports guys can take you out on. There is also a glass bottom/snorkeling boat that comes around ($30 US pp) and a parasailing boat ($70 USpp). I’ve always wanted to try parasailing so we did that. It was a windy day and we both got a bit sick to our stomachs but it was still worth the experience, so fun!
We only enjoyed the pool once as we loved the beach so much, but it was very nice and well maintained and usually not many people in it. Pool/Beach bar is there where they play music (lots of 90’s R&B, my fav!) I didn’t see many activities going on but the entertainment staff is there in the morning/early afternoon.
For food there is the buffet and the beach grill/restaurant. The grill serves fries, hamburgers, hotdogs, jerk chicken and jerk pork, grilled cheese and pizza. It was quite popular with the guests and we had lunch there everyday.
The buffet food was ok, would have liked to have seen more with authentic Jamaican food, but they did have a nice curried goat there a few nights. At breakfast there is French toast, pancakes, fruit and made to order omelettes. Some days there is bacon. We didn’t try lunch so can’t comment on that. There are apparently two al a carte restaurants but every time I tried to book online the days were blurred out. I didn’t bother to inquire.
Staying at the Cornwall you have full access to the sister resort next door, Montego Beach. We didn’t eat over there but heard the food was the same. We did go over there for drinks several times and to watch their show one night. They have a larger gift shop where you can purchase souvenir clothing, cigars, rum and potato chips. It’s an older resort but has a nice charm to it and from what I have heard there are a lot of Canadian’s that return there every year.
Back to the Cornwall..
The evening entertainment was fabulous. There is live music in the lobby during dinner and then a show at 9:30. There was an amazing electric violin?? player one evening, she was absolutely amazing. We also really enjoyed the steel drum band by the pool one night. Guests can either sit by the pool or watch the entertainment from their balconies, loved the energy!
Covid testing is done by an outside nurse in a room next to the towel hut. Book your appointment online when you arrive (they will give you a date based on your return flight). Don’t panic like we did if you don’t get confirmation within 24 hrs as stated, they will send you an email closer to your departure date. We did however have an issue accessing our results as after 48 hrs we still hadn’t received our email and were leaving. We spoke to the front desk and the young lady there was able to somehow print off our results, thank goodness. The PCR test that is required for return to Canada is $150 US and I believe the Antigen test for Americans is $40 US.
We also had a big issue with finding out when our airport transfer would be picking us up to take us back to the airport. There was supposed to be a Sunwing rep there on the Tuesday but we couldn’t find her. There was no book as there is at most resorts. I asked the front desk and they didn’t know so we walked to the Montego Beach side and asked as we had someone on our bus staying there. The young man at the desk, Andre, was very helpful and spent what seemed like an hour on the phone with Sunwing. Very much appreciated and we finally received our time.
The employees at the resort are very happy, kind and helpful. They always looked like they were having a good time which was awesome to see. Big shoutout to Denton as the buffet, he was very professional, attentive, and friendly and always had a spring in his step! Santana at the buffet, such a sweetheart, her and my daughter got along great! Joel and also Genius and Ryan making the food, friendly guys, always asking how our day was. Jodi, Viali, Antionette, Melvin, Kem, Stacy-Ann, Carl and Rodney on the beach, good guy! Oh and of course Mr. Beautiful from entertainment, quite the character. Lots of good people, sorry if I am
Forgot to mention there is a coffee bar on the second floor where you can get a cappuccino, expresso, iced coffee etc. My daughter loved it.
Also keep in mind that the food in the buffet is plated for you as it is behind plexi glass for Covid reasons. The resort has very strict Covid protocols which was appreciated. Masks are to be worn at all times just like I’m Canada, except when eating or drinking or in the pool/water or laying on the beach. Overheard a few ignorant Americans stating they don’t need to wear their mask..um yeah you do! If the employees can wear a mask all day in the heat you can wear one too! Even the performers were wearing mask at all times, even the reggae singer, while she was singing! We always saw people cleaning and we felt very safe.
To conclude..if you’re looking for a large generic resort or big party place the Cornwall is not your place. If you’re looking for a relaxing break and a great small resort vibe then give the Cornwall a try. We would return in a heartbeat!
Not a 4* hotel!!
Reviewed 1 September, 2021
We stayed here for a week from the UK & although we made the best out of our 1st holiday since the pandemic, this hotel is not great.
Let’s start with the good, the view from the rooms on the upper floors is immense, I would never get bored of that view!!! Covid procedures in place are good, we felt very safe & the staff do not lapse when it comes to ensuring procedures are followed. There is a good choice of drinks & most of the time the food was averagely good. The rooms are basic but very comfortable.
The airport is less than 10 minutes away & the planes did not affect our stay at all, it was nice to watch them coming in, but they were not noisy.
The beach is amazing & the resort seemed to be at low occupancy, so lots of space to feel safe.
Now the bad, staff morale is low, many staff never smiled during our stay, asking for things like fresh cutlery was a complete inconvenience to them, with tutting & eye rolling going on, some restaurant staff would ignore us whilst waiting which is shocking as we are a friendly, grateful family, all 4 of us regularly endured this. Only one member of staff took anytime to actually speak to us, it was clear that staff did not want to interact at all with us, which is fine, but many came across as rude.
The hotel appeared to run out of essential items or so we were told, this included shower gel for the room, butter, bacon & juice at breakfast, in my opinion these are essentials that a 4 star hotel should not be running out of.
The restaurant & bar staff regularly got the order wrong as they obviously had not listened properly, then was irritated when asked to fix the order very politely.
Our son who is a bit of a fussy eater did struggle with meals in the evenings, there is no children’s section & no chips or plain meats, but he did eat very well at breakfast & lunch.
We were always served our drinks in plastic or throw away small cups, even in the a la carte restaurants, I would of liked a glass in the restaurants, it’s a small thing but this would be something I expected in a 4 star hotel. Also one day, I found a eye lash in my drink, unfortunately for me I was drinking from a straw, so it was not until it was in my mouth that I realised.
The mini bar was empty because of Covid, never understood why that could be a reason as rooms were cleaned daily, getting water for the room was almost impossible, we had many thirsty nights due to this.
There was little entertainment or activities going on, this did not bother us, but if you are looking for a action filled resort this is not for you.
Personally I feel that different nationalities were treated differently by staff, I have personally never encountered this previously on holiday before, but there was times when queuing the staff bypassed us to serve a preferential nationality behind us.
