Basic but fine
Stayed here for 3 nights over New Year’s Eve. Room was basic, but had the essentials. Found a few hairs in the bed and shower. The men on reception were friendly enough and helpful. Only down fall is the area, full of very unsavoury people hanging around on street corners. Makes you feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re a female. Marienplatz was only a 15 minute walk away and have many lovely bakeries (Rishchart).
Basic and no frills
The hotel is basic and no frills. Mostly clean but some areas of the room need a thorough clean. Our bathroom had hairs up the wall (long as well as short and curly) which wasn’t pleasant. But overall okay. Be warned house keeping will walk into your room. During our stay house keeping walked into our room 4 times whilst we were still asleep. The first time was at 07:55. There were no ‘do not disturb’ signs which we could use so we just had to put up with it. This could be resolved simply with a ‘do not disturb’ sign for each room. Overall okay, cheap and cheerful. Didn’t eat breakfast there during our stay but would recommend eating in Munich’s many cafes.
Not as advertised
The street is packed with unsavory looking people, the hotel is a dump. The room is gross, small and not clean. One exposed neon tube light for bathroom lighting... We walked in and checked out immediately. Disgraceful
Nice hotel with easy access to many facilities
Schillerstraße is not a beautiful street - despite having a dozen hotels in the street, it has several cabarets and some of the people standing at the beginning of the street look rather strange. But as you walk along the street . getting further from Hauptbanhof, the atmosphere changes and you will find that Munich is also a melting pot of cultures. Astor Hotel is a very nice hotel, clean and comfortable, less than 10 minutes walk to Central Station U-bahn / S- bahn and trains, and a walking distance to Karlstadt and Marien Squares. Nearby, there are many shops and supermarkets. The rooms are spacious and provide the comfort of a 4-star hotel and if you need to work you have good conditions.. Breakfast is very good. Staff is very attentive. I found the relationship cost/quality very good.
Interesting location!
We chose the Astor because it was close to the train station and the old city center. The hotel itself is pretty standard. The staff was amazingly helpful. Breakfast was average and they kept it replenished. The only downside is you can’t just get coffee. They have a self service machine where you can get hot water, hot milk, cappuccino, and a few other things, but not black coffee. But one can live just fine on cappuccino alone. The hotel does have a restaurant attached that serves dinner. We didn’t eat here, but it did smell amazing. The Hotel is located in a neighborhood with a large immigrant population. So if you love middle eastern food, and I do, you will be in heaven! The pastry shops are enough to put you into a diabetic coma just for looking at them. Towers of baklava and mamool make a sight that can’t be passed up. And if you are looking for a quick bite on the run, there is no shortage of places to get good shawarma. Only a five minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof with an exit directly on to Schillerstraße makes for a convenient way of getting around town and to and from the airport. Getting to the heart of Munich and the pedestrian zone is only a 10 minute walk or a two stop ride on either the U-bahn, S-bahn or tram. Be aware the neighborhood looks a little sketchy with lots of spielhalle but at no time did we feel unsafe. The room was clean and the room maid did an awesome job making order out of our daily disheveling after a busy day in the city. Even though tipping isn’t customary at the table, make sure you tip the maid! If I’m back in Munich, I would definitely give the Astor another stay!
