More about the hotel
Great location
I really enjoyed my stay at Fin 'n feather. I booked a room with 2 beds, as a friend was supposed to travel with me. That fell through, so I went and enjoyed OBX solo. I had room 7 on the top floor. Great view and there's a little balcony area at the back as well. Just enough room to stand. The room was very clean and had enough towels to last for my visit. Cleaning service is suspended due to covid, so your room won't get cleaned every day. I understood this going in and had no issues with it. Another thing you need to understand is that there is no front desk here. Its a self serve lodge- type place. There is a dock in the back that has a great view. In the evenings, I watched the sunset, then sat around watching the fish jump. My last morning, I saw dolphins, maybe 20 feet from the dock. Its located in the middle of the islands, so its a great starting point for heading to Hatteras national seashore or going north to Duck and Corolla. A lot of reviews mention a mildew smell in the rooms. I can only attest to room 7, but there was no smell. I'm really sensitive to smells and I was fine. There's also mention of mildew in the showers and photos of door jams and woodwork that has damage. This building is surrounded by water and it's an island, so there's a ton of wind. ALL beach homes are like that. It's what salt, sand and wind do. My room was super clean and the steps and dock looked brand new, like they'd just been replaced. I went in on August 3rd and rode out the hurricane here. I will definitely be going back. CON: The only con I have is that there is a no refund policy. If hurricane evacuations had been mandatory, I'd have lost over $600. I booked after the storm had been named and couldn't get travel insurance. Please know that you need to buy the travel insurance because the company that runs this place is very clear about no refunds.
Worst accommodations ever
Room 4 was damp and had mold in it, booked 3 nights and had to find other accommodations after the first night because we woke up with headaches due to the mold in the room and we had to wash our clothes since they all smelled like mildew. We called the property and both people we talked to didn't have authority to relocate or refund us. We were also told someone from management would call us the next morning and we still haven't talked to anyone because they won't return my calls. Never rent from Kees Vacation rentals because they will take your money and you will get screwed.
A great little place
For the money you cant beat this place. Clean updated rooms. The sound is right out the backdoor. Pet friendly.Great housekeeping staff. My wife and I had a great time. Only bad thing is there is no pool, but close to the beach.
Won't go back
We waited in the drizzling rain for 1/2 hour while my husband was on the phone getting new codes because the door code we were given didn't work. Once inside, there was no wifi. My husband got on the phone again, was told to reboot the router...fortunately he know how to do this, but the room with the router was lock...no wifi. There were cobwebs hanging on the lamps, multiple deodorizers did their best to cover the obvious musty smell. There was no bedding for the pull out couch, we looked in every drawer and closet, we were forced to buy that. I can say the beds were comfortable
Excellent location but poor experience
The good: the location is great, dock on water is great, the cleaning staff were nice, free wifi. The bad: roaches in room, mattresses and bed frames are old/broken and need replacing, bathroom is just old and looks terrible, thin walls so you hear all the action next door to you, no staff on site, you have to call to check in, have issues, etc...location is not worth $200+ per night....better options out there for sure.
