Not Terrible, But Not Good

Where to start..... This is not anything close to a 5-star property. Maybe around 3.5 stars instead. It isn't horrible but it isn't great. - Rooms are tiny (yes, I know that this is the case for NY, but at £400/night I still expect a bathroom slightly larger than a closet), and dirty. Dust everywhere and clearly they are not properly deep cleaned between guests. This is not COVID secure at all. - Bathroom kept flooding from the shower and this was not fixed during our stay. - Housekeeping staff were useless. They came in without knocking, when told to come back in 20min they chose instead not make up our room, and they leave at about 3pm so you could not get them to make up your room later in the day once it became apparent they had missed your room. FYI Mondrian, you can't call yourself a 5-star hotel if you dont have 24-hour housekeeping! The housekeeping staff also stole sleeping pills from our room, and often moved things around in a reckless way (e.g. tv remote hidden under the bed cover, charging cables thrown under the bed etc.) - Front-desk staff are fresh out of hospitality training, are all about 20 years old and have no idea what they are doing. They could not even recommend where to get a pre-departure covid test for travel. How this is possible in a hotel catering to international guests during the COVID pandemic is beyond me! - There is no breakfast served on the property, so if you have a room with breakfast included they give you credit at a cafe down the street. Why not just sell rooms without breakfast included then???

Underwhelming and uninspired

To call this hotel a five star hotel is a stretch. This place both lack the facilities and the service mindset to be able to claim five stars. I have been in 4 star accommodations with superior facilities and level of service compared to the Mondrian. First of all, the hotel doesn't have a functional kitchen. That means no room service, and NO breakfast. Although I was supposed to have a continental breakfast included in the USD400 room rate, they only offer coffee and tea in the lobby. You receive a voucher for 10 dollars that you can use in a breakfast joint around the corner. Only problem is: 10 dollars won't get you very far. It only covered a cup of coffee and an orange juice in my case. The room itself is big for NYC standards, but very underwhelming when it comes to level of "luxury". The first thing you will notice is that the nice hardwood floors from the pictures on BOOKING.COM are in fact carpet. The bathroom is unpractical and gets soaked every time you take a shower. The towels are small and not the luxury bath towels you come to expect at this price level. The room comes with a minibar, but no glasses to enjoy your drinks. During my 3 nights staying at the hotel, the minibar was never restocked. At this price level, I expected to find a coffee and tea maker, but there are none. No ironer either. In it's marketing, the Mondrian will let you know that hotel include a roof top terrace bar, a club in the basement and a restaurant. The restaurant is out of business and the nightclub and terrace are not accessible from the hotel itself. When you check-in, the uninspired staff will offer NO information about the hotel's facilities. I asked for the terrace, but was told it was closed. All in all, I recommend the Mondrian to update their marketing to reflect that the hotel doesn't offer ANY facilities other than the room itself. To pay around USD400 for a room at this hotel is simply outrageous.

I would say the room is decent, but the rest of the hotel certainly isn’t five stars. The lobby and reception are underwhelming, there is no gym and even though we called and asked about certain parts of the hotel being open after booking they were closed. And when we brought this up, all we got is a “sorry guys”, no remedy or even a discount offered for the inconvenience. I think if you want a reasonably nice place on a good area this would be fine, but if you want a special place or special service this certainly isn’t it.

Great spot for a holiday trip to NYC!

We have been staying at the Mondrian Park Ave. for going on 7 years now for a reason. This hotel's commitment to hospitality and customer service continues to set it apart from other hotels in Manhattan. This is especially noteworthy given the fact that we are still in the middle of a pandemic. The general manager, Kumar, was kind and helpful. Tyler Torchia, the director of Housekeeping, welcomed us with a lovely note and a bottle of wine. He quickly also sent two bathrobes upon our request. Our corner room was spacious and clean and housekeeping left it in great condition each day of our 6-day stay. While Cleo is not currently open, we were not left wanting. We highly recommend you take advantage of the breakfast vouchers provided for the spot around the corner. Absolutely delicious options and far better than any "continental breakfast" hotels typically provide. Will gladly stay here again during our next trip to NYC. :)

If it were rated a three-star hotel I would give it a four-star rating.

I rated it a 2 star because it's considered a 5 star hotel. I asked them at the desk how many stars the hotel was and they said it was considered a boutique Hotel. But on Expedia it wreaks it five stars. The walls are paper-thin and you can hear every word spoken by all of your neighbors. There is a constant intermittent banging 24/7. At least from my room in 1907. The showers are low flow and the hot water is not as hot as at least I would like it. Also, it runs out before I'm done with my shower.
