Avoid This Place

We booked five nights at this Residence Inn in Newport News, VA. What a sad experience. After three nights with zero attention to our room, we took our trash downstairs to empty it. There was no one at the front desk. A sign on display at the desk stated “We are temporarily away from the desk.” As we stood at the desk for about 5 minutes, the phone rang five times and all five calls were unanswered.
A very mediocre breakfast is served from 6 am to 9 am every day of the week. We have recently stayed in Marriotts all across the country during a cross country move. We never saw another Marriott that quit serving breakfast as early as 9 am on a weekend morning.
We think that beds are freshened only when one checks out. No new towels have been offered after three nights. We won’t be staying here again!
This place tarnishes the usual dependable Marriott reputation. It does not deserve the Marriott brand.
This hotel deserves special recognition as the worst experience we have had as longtime and frequent Marriott customers.
The Best! Highly Recommended!

Bianca greeted us when we arrived, and made us feel right at home. She is a great representative for Marriott and this hotel. Our room suite was huge, clean, well-equipped, quiet, & comfortable. The breakfast had a nice variety of options & was very good, and gave us a nice start to our days of exploring the area. All the staff were very helpful. We enjoyed the indoor pool and the gym.
Good location, but cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired.

I was in the area with my family to experience Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. For those that don't want to pay the higher prices to stay a few miles from the park, this hotel is an easy 15-20 minute ride down the road.
While I am a little easier to please when it comes to hotel cleanliness, my wife is very discerning and will pick up on all the little things. Our room was generally clean at first sight, what I would usually expect from a Marriott property. Upon closer inspection, we noticed stray hairs on desks and counters, in the shower, and on end tables. Appliances not wiped down, the microwave needing to be cleaned before we could use it. It was more disappointing considering that we're in the Age of Covid and that you would think that cleanliness would be a greater priority.
Aside from the cleanliness factor, the rest of the day was fine. Had a good night's rest, ordering breakfast downstairs in the to-go bags was simple and easy. The staff I interacted with were friendly and pleasant.
If the cleanliness improves I can see myself coming back since there is so much more that I want to do around the Williamsburg area. However, if it's going to stay the same, I'll have to venture elsewhere.
FRONT DESK IS HORRIBLE

Spoke with the front desk three times to have my room cleaned each time I was assured that housekeeping was notified and aware. Of course my room is not clean. My company has contracted this hotel for an 8 weeks stay cost of more than 7k, you would think they would understand the room needs to be cleaned at least weekly which I scheduled and two hours prior verified the time. The front desk person is useless and rude, cutting me off during the conversation and trying to give my vague answer's. Customer service is dead. If things don't improve by Monday will have to leave this very disappointing.

We booked a room for two nights to take our grandaughter for a brief spring break visit so that she could enjoy the pool. When we arrived we were told the only room available was a handicapped accessible room which really does not work if you are traveling with a child as the entire bathroom floor is tiled with drains so that when showering the entire bathroom gets wet. We asked for a different room but were told none were available. The ice maker in our room was not working and there was no other
Ice machine available. We had to go to the front desk to request ice. There was no cork screw in the room and we had to go to the front desk to request that as well. That’s three trips to the front desk just to get settled in. The carpet in the room was badly stained, bedding not comfortable, needs replacement. The room appeared to be clean but just well used and battered. We usually love Residence Inn because our grandaughter is diabetic and the kitchen gives us more flexibility in providing healthy food for her. The breakfast provided was limited and the microwaved breakfast sandwiches were barely edible. I know that Covid changes what can be provided but it was awful! The final blow was that the website stated an indoor pool
and when we went to check that out it was closed! Evidently not planning to reopen. Since that was the purpose of our visit we checked out and moved to the Marriott Oceanfront in Va Beach. I always feel that I can rely on the Marriott name but the Newport News location needs to up its game or drop the Marriott name.
