Exact opposite
When I checked into the hotel I asked the concierge to put my wife and I in a quiet room away from any guests so that we could have quiet relaxing time. We requested for a quiet room but I guess the concierge at the front desk did not understand what I was asking for, so he placed us in a King Size room right next to the elevators on the top floor . On the other side of our room he placed other guest in the room directly next to where my wife and I were staying . The room we were placed in (418) not only did the room not have a working a/c or heater but the room phone did not even work at all . To top it all off of the decorative lamp located to the entry way to the bathroom was missing the light bulb. Finally after hours of trying to go to sleep I went down to the lobby an Reiterated what I asked for before. I would never recommend staying at this hotel to anyone visiting Oakland or the Bay Area. Worst Hotel experience I’ve ever in Oakland .
Decent hard product, but soft product leaves a lot to be desired
The pros: Inexpensive Decent location Room has decent amenities The cons: Nonchalant service Smells like weed Limited breakfast options Lots of yelling Near the train No HVAC As mentioned above, this inn is a great location, with a great price, and you can tell they're trying. They had a fridge, a microwave, and a decently-sized TV in the room. More than I expected for $80~ish a night. The receptionists were what'd you expect at this price point, and the staff were mostly positive. Their breakfast options were also fairly limited, but if you were really hungry, it would do the job. While the HVAC system was broken, they did offer an extra portable heater that did the job. Unfortunately some things that they can't control really make the inn far worse than it tries to be. The behavior of their guests, their proximity to the train tracks, and the people yelling outside the hotel really affect the way guests experience the inn. Other guests were smoking weed that could be smelled all the way down the hall and in other rooms, and they were piling up so much trash they just started to leave it by their doors in the hallway. This is in addition to the fact that they were yelling and screaming, and the doors did little to muffle the sound. The yelling continued through midnight and kept waking me up throughout the night. This yelling came both from guests in the hallway and from people walking on the streets. I could also see how the room had been worn down by prior guests, with dents in the lampshade, stains on the carpet, and even though I could tell the cleaning staff put effort in the bathroom (towel folded into swan, etc), the light was malfunctioning. Thankfully, it didn't bother me much, but for those who aren't used to "roughing it," this might not be the place for you.
Avoid at all costs!!!
I read the reviews but a few of my friends were staying here and it was centrally located to everything I was doing on this trip. Parking also came with the room and since there wasn't much parking in the area I figured it was worth trying. I booked directly through their website, got an email confirmation and had a hold on my credit card so I arrived expecting a room. Boy was I wrong! When I arrived not only was I not in the computer system but even after giving my confirmation code the front desk person could not find my reservation. I showed the confirmation email (which came from the Jack London Inn email address) and the hold on my card but she had not idea how either happened. They were sold out and provided no solutions as to where else to stay or even an apology for the "mistake". It took several days to get the hold off of my card. Thankfully I had a car and other means of paying for a different hotel (it's difficult to book a room at 2 different hotels on the same card, usually flagged as fraud). Funny thing is my friends had a unused room as a part of their reservation and got a full refund. Guess this place doesn't like making money or having repeat guests. Also the parking area was super sketchy and felt unsafe, the rooms are definitely photoshopped and my friends said it wasn't a good experience for them either.
You get what you pay for :(
The staff were very disinterested in their job. Everyday different staff, who were more interested in surfing the internet. The rooms were drab, with not enough lighting. Paint peeling, copious amounts of silicon sealant around the shower (no bath) and not enough blankets - though they did provide them when asked (the heating/AC was broken). The bed needed to be tightened up - it was wobbly. And did I mention that Amtrak passes in front of the hotel from 4am to 1am and blows its horn as it passes?! There's a train every 15 minutes! Not a hotel for a light sleeper!! Location: next to Jack London Square and the marina with lots good bars and restaurants. 15min walk to City Centre - but past run-down area and homeless encampments. :( 50 mins by BART (12th Street) to SFO.
My booked room was not available
I arrived on Nov. 7 2019 as scheduled only to be told that I did not have a reservation. The male receptionist at the front deck told me that Booking.com did not book with the hotel and that this happens all the time with Booking.com and that I should have booked with the hotel directly. I was then told that the hotel was booked and they could not give me a room. This took place even though I was sent two different emails confirming that I did in fact have a room on my reserved date.
