Clean and comfortable

Love the location of this boutique hotel - easy to visit places by foot from this location. The area feels very safe.
The staff are friendly, starting with the woman at reception. We received a warm greeting and were brought up to our second floor room. The room was a good size for two people. Our room had two queens. The wardrobe had ample space, with a safe. It is a little dark in the room when the window is shuttered, but I love that we can open the shutter AND the glass. Being on the second floor, we had a beautiful view of the flowering tree.
The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. I do wish that they provided a second chair in the room. My only negative remark would be that it took a long time (3.5 - 5 minutes) for the water to run hot in the shower. On the first night, we took cold showers, thinking that there was no hot water. The second night, we decided to crank the water to hot and let it run and that "fixed" our cold water situation. I think it's simply because of the location of our room (#13) in relation to the water heater. In terms of water wastage, not the best, but we were happy to have hot showers again.
I would say that most of the staff did not speak English, and our Spanish is extremely limited, however, we got by fine. The staff at breakfast were very kind. Although we did not take full advantage of the free breakfast, we would always have a cup of coffee and a plate of fruit. We did have a full breakfast on our final morning, and overall, everything is fresh and delicious.
It's easy to miss the little shop in the hotel, but it has some beautiful jewelry and crafts - worth a look.
If you are light sleeper, you'll probably want to sleep with the shutters firmly closed. The church bells do start chiming at 6:30 am and the morning chorus starts around the same time (end of January). I got used to waking at this hour, so it didn't bother me. I'd say only the fireworks going off at 6:30 am in the city was the only sound I didn't love in the morning (like canons being shot). But that only happened on one morning.
I'd definitely stay at Hotel Azul again.
Cute, quaint, fantastic staff

This hotel is great. Awesome location, service is impeccable. It is older and sound echos, however, what it lacks from a being a legit 5 star property, it makes up with the staff. The food at the restaurant is great. Good coffee, amazing Oaxacan hot chocolate! Free breakfast, always a plus!
Quicked us out at midnight on our 5th night stay

I'm a seasoned traveler and my husband has worked in hospitality for over 20 years, and never in our lives we have been treated with so little respect (and in my own country... what a shame!). This was beyond outrageous and close to unbelievable!
We went to bed at 9:30pm and at 11:40pm we started hearing huge noises outside in the common area... they were tossing a HUGE pile of gravel in the patio in the middle of the hotel.
We complained about them waking us up, and asked them to stop. They stopped, we went back to bed, and 20 mins after at 12am (midnight) they wake us up AGAIN by calling over the phone to our room, telling us that they will continue the construction, and that they can get us another hotel if we are not ok not to sleep with the HUGE noise...
Of course we were not ok since there was NO WAY to sleep with having 6 workers tossing gravel around. We had to pack at 12:15am and we left the hotel, never to come back and wanting to share this terrible experience so nobody has to live this uncomfortable and humiliating experience again.
We were staying for 9 nights at the hotel, had already spent 4, yesterday night was the 5th, and 4 were pending. I am sorry for the owners because clearly the Manager they hired is not the right one. He was not available to resolve this issue (M.I.A), and he left his nice and extremely ashamed night lady front desk agent to resolve all the issue alone... he lost 9 nights of stay = $2,000 dollars, plus another $200 for the night they needed to pay for us to move to another hotel and taxi, and gained a terrible worth of mouth for free.
What type what of manager schedules a construction at midnight with guests in the hotel? What type of manager doesn’t PREVENT the situation by asking kindly the guests to relocate for 1 night and get 1 complementary night? What type of manager doesn’t supports their staff to carry out their dirty work.... I would recommend the owners to search for a more qualified management.
My husband been in hospitality for so long we completely understand that hotels need to perform maintenance and repairs from time to time, and we would have been understanding if a proposal was given to us at a convenient time; but the lack of planning, guest anticipation and lack of touch, caused for something that could have been easily prevented or resolved, to become a terrible experience!
Better stay in another hotel in Oaxaca, don’t risk with this one!
THey kicked us out of the room at midnight

The staff is incredibly stupid and started construction in the middle of the night, and then proceeded to kick us out. this is outrageous. They sell themselves as a boutique hotel and really operate as a 3rd class hotel

Loved our time at Hotel Azul. It’s beautiful with a nice cozy feel. The room is cute and they even have a hat, scarf, and tote for you to utilize. Breakfast was included and was yummy with made to order quesadillas. Sara was very nice and gave us some recommendations. It was next to the Santo Domingo cathedral and a relaxing walk to the center. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the city!
