Beautiful hotel with great service, just outside of Lisbon

Reviewed 13 november, 2021

This is a beautiful boutique hotel in the small town of Paco de Arcos, about a 20 minute train ride from Lisbon. It's a peaceful respite from busy Lisbon with several nice restaurants within walking distance. You can catch the train a short walk up the hill and they come pretty regularly. It's a great location to explore Belem, Estorial and Cascais since they are all pretty close on the train line. Our room was large with a nice view of the pool, and the daily breakfast was generous with a pretty view. The service everywhere was wonderful and we felt very safe, which was great as this was our first European trip post COVID.

Lovely weekend stay

I stayed at this Hotel during a very hot weekend (although windy) in July, and spent hours by the outdoor Pool, that was simply perfect. Had a very nice bedroom by the pool, on the ground floor. The palace is beautiful, and very close by you will find great restaurants. The gardens are worth a visit, and you can stroll by the many beaches that surround the Hotel. We also visited the Sunday flea market nearby. Cannot fault anything regarding the Hotel and services provided. Breakfast was surprisingly good, and you can have it outside on one of their exterior terraces. I asked for a late check-out, that was granted, so we enjoyed a couple of hours by the pool on our departure day, which was a very nice gesture.

Fabulous stay

We chose the Vila Gale because of the proximity to Lisbon (we had business all over Portugal but wanted to visit Lisbon, too) and the view of the ocean - and we were not disappointed at all. The welcome was warm and friendly, and our suite with separate living and sleeping room, big terrace, garden/pool and ocean view was very pleasant as well - everything in order, kept clean, and a lot of space (our youngest daughter, 2, was with us, and she needs a l o t of space...). Parking was in the adjacent garage (good thing because the town itself does not offer too much space for cars). Breakfast: fantastic and outstanding. One of the best breakfasts we have ever had the pleasure to enjoy, a wide range of fresh everything, plus champagne, in an antique setting. For those who enjoy such ambiance, this is paradise. Dinner: in the same room as breakfast, and equally pleasant. Dishes are delicious, and service is flawless, too. Spa area: we used their indoor pool, sauna, and steam bath - all of which are kept in excellent state, offer sufficient space, and a quiet and relaxing time. The location itself is fine for those who have a car, Lisbon is nearby - 20 minutes to the centre when there is no rush hour or jam. Without car - it might appear a bit off, though. Overall: definitely worth a da capo, and really nothing to complain about at all - we loved it.

Lovely boutique hotel

Reviewed 6 december, 2019

Stayed here when I was working in Lisbon for a week. Was recommended the hotel that although was a little way from the office (only €5 in an Uber) it was in a lovely setting. The hotel has views of the Ocean and the hotel is built into an old traditional building and a new secretion added. The staff are really helpful and all well dressed. The rooms are very well appointed and the hotel has a lovely art and poetry feel. The room I had was a suite which was large and had lovely views of the gardens, pool and ocean. The food we had at breakfast was nice enough. It was difficult to keep it hot and fresh looking as the food was served buffet style in the centre of the restaurant. The outdoor pool is large but the indoor pool is smaller. It was a bit strange that they wanted you to purchase a swimming hat to go into the indoor pool which was weird. All in all a lovely, traditional hotel which is close enough to everything you need to be near to in Lisbon. There is a train station a few mins walk and it’s easy enough to get a taxi. Some nice restaurants within walking distance. Would definitely be my choice again when I visit Lisbon again.

Excellent Hotel, but not a great location

Very nice hotel but you'd never know it was historic because there is no signage about its origin. Bellman told us only 5 rooms remain in the historic part. Rest is modern, clean, quiet with comfortable bed. Portugal reveres its poets, so each room is named for an individual poet, and large script of a poem written over the bed head board. Bathroom is large, and modern. Our room was on lower floor, and the doorwall opened out on the pool (not something we could use in late October) which was lovely. Gardens at foot of property provided a nice respite. Breakfast buffet had everything you could want, and all the staff were gracious. This hotel was chosen by our tour group, probably because easier for their bus to get in & out and be on the way to Sintra. But when we had a free hour, we walked nearby and there was nothing of interest to see or shop on foot. We wished we had been closer to Lisbon, but that is not the hotel's fault so I'd still rate it as excellent, despite our not wishing to return to this location.
