16 beds and only 1 bathroom!

I understand prices are inflated in Brazil during Carnival. I paid 230 Brazilian Reis (USD $75) per night for a dorm bed here during the five nights of Carnival. According to the reservation on hostel world there would be 8 beds in the room. The owner however kept adding more and more beds to the room until there were 16 beds packed into the room. With only 1 bathroom. Sixteen people and only one bathroom! You can imagine what that was like. The owner did the same thing in the other rooms of the hostel as well. I do not mind a business owner trying to make money. And I know Carnival is their major event of the year. But I don't like when they take advantage of their guests. Doing something like this destroys the trust between a proprietor and a guest. I assume the owner only cared about short term profits. I personally would be ashamed to treat my guests like this. I had read stories of hostels doing similar in Rio but I had expected more from this place based upon the good reviews on hostel world. The owner provided no explanation and never even tossed any guest a free beer (this is in a country were a beer costs less than USD $1). This is my only complaint. The staff at the hostel were amazing - an incredible group of people. The breakfast was very good. The security very good. The owner was charming, friendly and helpful. It's a beautiful building. The location is great. It would have been an absolutely wonderful Carnival experience at this hostel if the owner hadn't screwed guests over to make some fast money. When i was leaving I got a vague apology, "I'm sorry if there were any problems but you have to understand it was Carnival." Yes, I do understand it was carnival but I also think the owner should be ashamed of her behavior. Don't disrespect your guests because it will hurt your business in the long run.
Could be better

Place is nice, location is good, breakfast is also quite decent but unfortunately the general atmosphere was kind of sometimes uneasy due to obvious tensions between owners of the hostel, leading to some weird or unpleasant/cold attitude from their part towards guests, in addition to curiously wrong advise or opinion regarding what to visit and to do (for example best time to enjoy Olinda by night is on Sunday although that is the only day of the week when streets are full of teenagers coming from surrounding suburbs who can become so violent and dangerous that main streets are now secured by cops; or best moment to visit Recife center is on Sunday because shops are closed so less people in the streets, although it is kind of obvious and well known that this type of city centers must be avoided days when shops are closed since they can turn out to quite dangerous for tourists). I also did not like their reactions when being asked for anything, service or whatever being not strictly included in the room price. So globally ok, but could be so much better, the hostel itself being so nicely made (with a big garden full of trees) and decorated.
A very good place to stay in Olinda

Perfectly located in the centre of Olinda (with everything within 10' walking distance) this place is clean, spacious dorm, good lockers, good breakfast (some tea would be good, though), great and friendly staff, stable and fast wifi and good vibe. Beds are comfortable (beware of the mosquitos) and the showers have hot water and good water-pressure. Security is good with locked doors and 24h reception. There's drinks for sale and some kind of restaurant in house. A good place to stay in Olinda.
Not as advertised, so book with care

We were disappointed as we had purposely booked an air-conditioned room with private bathroom. As it turns out our room did not have an ensuite bathroom, but had a dedicated bathroom next to the room that was accessible from the corridor- so you had to put on flip flops and clothes to go to the bathroom. Electricity to the air conditioner was only turned on 2200- 0700, so we couldn't as planned have a place to rest and cool down in the afternoons/evenings after sight seeing. Our room was in the front of the building, and the two doors opened out to the main corridor and to the breakfast area respectively, so it is noisy. Guests are not allowed to take the hotel keys with them, so anyone coming back had to press a buzzer that sounded through the whole building to call someone to let them in (staff slept and mostly hung out in the back of the building). Some fellow guests came back late one evening, and had to buzz continuously till the attendant woke up, waking everyone else up also. We also had a number of occasions during our stay when it took ages for a staff member to hear the buzzer and let us in. Staff forgot to turn on the electricity to our air conditioner one night, and we had to buzz until they arrived and fixed it. This is not a good way to run a hostel. The good points were the room was reasonably clean, though unlike almost all private rooms in hostels/pousadas we've had, they did not clean the room/bathroom on a daily basis. Breakfast was decent, and you can eat any fruit (if ripe) from the mango, pitanga and cashew trees in the backyard. Staff were pretty friendly, and helped with laundry and calling taxis. Location was excellent, and the room was reasonably priced. Based on our expectations from the deceptive booking.com room description, the hotel should only get 2 stars or a "poor" rating. For people reading this, and know what they are getting, I'd rate it as a 3 stars or average, because of all the noise and buzzer issues. If hotel management are reading this review- change your room descriptions, or get more disgruntled guest and poor reviews!
