A lovely property which could be much better!

Reviewed 22 june, 2017

The location is very close to the sea and the little ancient guard post with cannons which is just in front the of the sea and which by the way offers a lovely view. The property is really lovely and the internal part, where the swimming pool is, reveals a mesh between nature and "humans" which I truly enjoyed, especially while having breakfast on the terrace right next to the swimming pool (which is small but very nice). Said that the harsh part. The site is literally infested by mosquitoes! I've never seen that many into an hotel and especially into a room, mine for instance (but they're most likely all alike). The first night I've killed +25 of them within +4hrs and I couldn't sleep at all, it was a real nightmare! In the morning I've realised why! The little mosquito-net (picture blurred but understandable) in the bathroom was no longer attached properly and, even worse, the window in the room had two huge gaps ... BY DESIGN! As you can see in the pictures, on top and bottom part of the windows junction there are two holes the size of a thumb from which mosquitoes get in and out with no problems whatsoever and that was a frustrating discovery. So killing mosquitoes is not an option. I bought a repellent spray and with that the situation changed completely. Still it is unacceptable that in such a place with so many mosquitoes measures to protect the guests haven't been taken AT ALL. Apart from this relevant (IMO) fact the property by itself is lovely but certainly needs more maintenance and care in any sense (ugly fixes, old and noisy AC, showers with auto temp water which may not be warm really and not the most comfortable beds). The personnel were nice and helpful, the breakfast good and with a reasonable selection and the food for dinner was very good. WIFI works but signal on some rooms is almost non existent, gotta go downstairs in the hall to use it. So, in conclusion, it's a place that with some investment can improve the experience significantly thanks to the position and a unique location. But at present time it's overpriced. If you want comfort and/or you've kids with you and don't want to spray them all every hour with repellent, spend some money more and go somewhere else.

Good hotel for the price

Reviewed 20 may, 2017

We stayed at this hotel with a group of twenty two North Americans. The rooms are adequate. A plus is the comfortable bed. Minuses include very little storage space for clothing and dim lighting. The free wi-fi did not reach our end of the corridor, second floor room but was available in the lobby and restaurant. The breakfast was adequate. We dined here one night during our four night stay and the food was delicious. The best feature of the hotel is the lovely blue tiled swimming pool with several patio tables and chairs. A very nice place to relax and refresh after a day in the heat and humidity.

Decent

Stayed here during the World Cup. Breakfast/restaurant were decent. The bartender made the best caipirinhas we had over our whole trip! Room was nothing special. Internet was slow. Staff was friendly and helpful. I was not thrilled that the front desk manager was pushing that I use a staff member for transport to the airport over a standard taxi. Great location for walking and exploring Olinda.

5 star service

Reviewed 6 december, 2014

Infrastructure could still do with some improvement. I noticed over my 5 nights here that there was ongoing maintenance work and sprucing up of the paintwork. There is no lift to the upper-most floor so this may pose a 'discourager' for people who prefer not to walk up the 3 flights of stairs. If however you don't mind the stairs, you will be treated to a fantastic view of the sea in all its shades of green and blue. Breakfast was decent and on Friday and Saturday there was a tapioca grill in full swing taking your order of flavour on the spot. There is actually a lunch and dinner menu available right at the hotel if you prefer an in-house meal or given the close location to the historic centre head out onto the streets for a taste of good Olinda cuisine.. Staff overall was very friendly and helpful. I was particularly impressed by one of the waiters/ barmen - Freddy. He was extremely courteous and very professional in mixing a few caipirinhas and taking our orders and always with a smile.

Not what we were expecting

Pleasant hotel that is old and tired. The breakfast was OK but the rooms need a lot of help. Dripping plumbing, leaking AC and could be cleaner without being dirty. It is excellently located for the historical district but after that there is nothing close. The beach has Shark warnings and is polluted. A couple of restaurants close by that are average, the food at the hotel was quite good but not outstanding. Small pool that is this hotels only attraction. The staff were OK but did not go out of there way to do anything. Average
