2nd stay at Disney's Wilderness Lodge

Reviewed 2 december, 2021

Our last stay was Aug 2019 so before the pandemic. We are DVC owners at Copper Creek. We stayed for 7 nights in November and had a great trip. Yes things do feel different with masking and mobile ordering but we never had an issue mobile ordering from Roaring Fork and we did it from the bus on the way back to the resort and from our room. Most people did abide by the mask rules, I'm from Canada so mask rules are a part of my life and considering we needed a neg PCR to get back to Canada, I was appreciaive of the people that followed the rules (as we traveled with an unvaccinated 9 year old). We got there around 11am after transferring from the Poly and our room was ready so we were very thankful for that! Buses were frequent, we never waited long, same with the boat to MK. Roaring fork was good, food was great quality for the price. We only used the pool once or twice (Copper Creek pool, didn't make it to Boulder ridge pool this trip), we had fun at it. Our room was a studio with walk in shower on the 4th floor, it had a view of the pool. The bed was hard and I had to shove a pillow under my hip some nights but otherwise it was fine, clean, comfy. We will be back for sure, we love WL

Last time at this hotel.

My family and I have stayed at the wilderness lodge at Disney world many times. This time will be my last. First, problem was the lack of adequate towels. Usually not a problem, but when I walked half a mile down to get more, none were available at the front desk. Plus it took an hour to finally get those towels. All while having to wait for my shower. Secondly, the bell hop service is quite lacking in the fact that unless I pay for a bell hop to take my bags from my room, I can expect to take 5 trips to my car. No rolling carts for guests to use. Lastly, at the Roarin fork restaraunt, they prepare sandwiches and salads each morning for purchase. If you happen to want a fresh sandwich at the end of the day, while older ones with stale hard bread are still available, be ready for a fight. That kind of thing is not normal and frowned upon. It’s not that the place is bad, but the service is not acceptable in light of the leg you use to pay for the room. Not counting the arm you also use to pay for a room that accommodates 5 people instead of just 4.

Disney good and bad

The lodge is beautiful but Disney has cut back on a lot of services. Many rooms need an update. The price is higher than ever. They charge $25 a night to self park without telling you until after. Magic express is gone 12/31. While much of WDW is still great the magic is sputtering.

Will Never Be Back Again

Our first time at Disney is one that I wish I could forget, but it left a bad taste in my mouth and the only thing I can do is provide my experience with you in hopes that you can possibly provide a better one for the next guests you have. I can’t imagine I’m the only one sending their negative experience because most people we encountered were miserable. Kids screaming, parents eye rolling at the chaos, people yelling at servers in restaurants, people pissed for having to use an app to order food. Which by the way is absolutely crazy - you can't enjoy a park while on your phone the whole time and my phone was constantly at a low battery due to having to use the app to schedule reservations and Genie + rides. We stayed at Wilderness Lodge. First of all Donna at Whispering Canyon Cafe was absolutely unhelpful in scheduling dinner reservations for us. I truly believe customer service has declined since Covid because everyone who I've spoken to about going to Disney pre-Covid loved it and post-Covid has hated it. The Disney app is not helpful in cancelling reservations and re-scheduling - there were multiple times when we couldn't reserve dinner because there were either no available times or because we had changed our plans, as you can imagine would happen when traveling with small children, and it wouldn't let us schedule a new reservation because the other one wouldn't cancel. Good luck trying to call the reservation line - there was a 2 hour wait. Also good luck trying to call Wilderness Lodge - "All circuits busy". I tried to call to ask about the bus schedule and my dad tried to call my son in the hotel room for fun - not able to get in touch with anyone. We purchased the photo package - and there was never an opportunity to have a photographer take our picture - the lines were too long and the only time I saw photographers were at the front of the park in front of the castle. We only got one picture and that was us on Splash Mountain. We only were able to ride 4 rides in 2 days. There seemed to be a lack of staff overall, which I understand - it's Covid - but why allow for the hotel to book at full capacity? Shame on Disney for allowing these poor workers to be thrown to the wolves, they're exhausted with the lack of help and thus, can't provide the service and experience that anyone shelling out thousands of dollars should expect from "The most magical place on earth." I actually left the "most magical place on earth" in a worse mood than when I arrived. We booked a first class ticket out of there a whole day early - and let me just say the disappointment I felt then and the disappointment I feel right now at this moment will keep me from ever visiting a Disney resort or park ever again. This was my son's first experience - one that we'd been waiting years for the right time to go - he's 8 now so perfect for his age - and his first time was ruined. I can't honestly look at the Disney brand the same - even Disney+ is making me roll my eyes at the mirage that is Disney.

Be prepared for a less than magical stay

Ok, let me start that I am a serious Disney World Fan. 30 years of visits, and my favorite lodge is the Wilderness. With that said, this year is a real change. The resort has the feel of operating on an emergency basis. Closed restaurants, short staff, and cast members that appear more exhausted than magical. Last evening after a very rainy day at EPCOT the family attempted to return to the Lodge. An hour and a half wait for the bus, multiple attempts to contact the Lodge, family members going to the front desk, three calls to resort security. Finally, guests standing in the road blocking the bus got some attention. Standing there watching a Grandmother holding a 6 month old trying to keep the child warm is not the picture that I usually associate with Disney. Save your money, wait. Maybe the magic will return when management wakes up to the problems at the resort.
