Despite receiving written confirmation of our booking from the owner, they gave our room to somebody else, on New Years Eve, no less. The employees tried to reach the owner, but he never responded, and no one helped us try to find another room anyplace else. They said we were on our own, nothing could be done. Also, the people working spoke no English (or Spanish). Skip this hotel. Our tour guide was able to find us a room nearby.
A magical place in the heart of OP
The charming, lovely and rustical Pouso do Chico Rei is just around the corner of the Praça Tiradentes. Looking out of the window in the living room you see the beautiful Igreija Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The location is perfect to explore the centro historico. The view out of the window in room 6 is a dream. The room was clean and charming with old and rustical furniture, I loved it. The WIFI is strong, breakfast fresh and tasty and the owner Ricardo is incredibly nice and helpful. Also Edna and Aparecida who work here are lovely and very helpful. There is not one negative thing I can say about this place. I'm looking forward to come back here some day.
It could be good but...
The hotel could be a great place to stay but no... It is very disappointing that such a beautiful old house in such well located place is not a good place to stay. Maybe one day this was a nice hotel. Today, the total lack of care makes it a very decadent and sad place. The rooms need painting, the sheets smell bad, the batrooms are not well cleaned and there are apparent eletric wires all over. The breakfast is not bad but not good either. Such a wonderful city deserves a better place to stay.
Charming rustic Pousada
The glowing reviews are correct. The owners are lovely, the location convenient, the breakfast generous (fresh bread, fruits and cheese), and the antiques amazing. Warm water only in the shower. TP in the waste basket. Old building with old windows that rattle (so do the shutters) and let in cold air. Mosquitos. No hair drier. Good fast WiFi. Good bedding with enough blankets to stay warm in winter. Sloping floors, which is no surprise as the building is 200+ years old. Super-steep stairs and no lift (see prior sentence.) Great place, but not for everyone.
Amazing City and friendly people
The location is great, you can find everything you need within a waking distance. There are good restaurants nearby and many shops to buy souvenirs. The pouso/house is definitely a big plus. The rooms are big and beautifully presented. The people in the house is also very friendly, Ricardo and Dna Edna were amazing. They gave us some tips where to go where to eat... I definetely go back :)
