Lovely part from the steep stairs!

Reviewed 25 november, 2021

Great location and very clean and comfortable rooms. Staff really helpful and friendly. Big minus is that there are very steep, narrow spiralling stairs. The reception is on the first floor and the rooms go up to the third floor. You need to be fit to stay here!

Great location, basic but comfortable

The hotel is in a perfect location, right in the centre of Oxford. There are lots of narrow, spiral stairs leading to the reception and the rooms which could be difficult to navigate. The rooms are fairly basic but spacious and clean. There is noise outside, it’s the centre of a University city. Earplugs worked fine! The staff were lovely and very helpful.

This could be such a wonderful hotel ...

The staff are amazing, so friendly and greeted me by name when I arrived; the room was lovely if a bit tatty, but the noise was just awful. Now I know that this is not the hotel's fault, but I didn't get a wink of sleep because my bed was vibrating with the noise from The Broad. It was constant and I felt like I was going mad. When I complained I was told something about the local council not allowing changes to the building, I understand that but I do think that the owners need to be inventive. I won't be staying there ever again.

Avoid

Whilst in a good location, everything else disappoints. More of a hostel than a hotel, the website photos lead you to believe you are staying in a period sandstone building. The reality is some rooms above shops on the High Street. 80s period features and our room had zero sound insulation. We were woken by employees chatting about bonfire night at 7am in an office next to our room! Bathroom had noisy saniflow plumbing. I have stayed in better hostels. Avoid.

You won’t get any sleep !

I stayed here last night along with my student daughter that I was there to visit . You go up a flight of steep creaky stairs to a window that is their reception! You get a key which should tell you immediately this is an old fashioned hotel , in fact it’s most definitely not a hotel but a room only establishment there’s definitely no breakfast. We stayed in room 101 you should avoid this room like the plague as it’s one floor up and is straight onto a very busy very noisy street the noise will go on until 3am and the street cleaners arrive at 5.30 the street light glares through the badly hung gaping curtains . There is a hole cut into the window frame to act as a vent for an AC tube it has an inch gap all around it to let in the noise and cold air it really is unbelievable it’s passed health and safety rules ! The room is old dated rusty radiator old brown furniture but to be fair the bedding and towels were very clean. Only stay here if you are desperate you’ll get no sleep and when you complain as we did to the receptionist she had the bare faced cheek to tell us they only ever get compliments not complaints !! Right we believe you not ! Very disappointing. Try The Royal Oxford by the train station it’s the same price almost and you get breakfast and most importantly it’s quiet
