Mixed Feelings

Overall, we had a great time however there are some issues. The atmosphere and location are fabulous. If you’re in the right room, the view is incredible. The food and drinks were what you would expect from an all inclusive, and we had no trouble getting into the specialty restaurants any night. I personally did not like the buffet for dinner, it was chaotic but that was from other guests behavior as opposed to the hotel. Just a FYI. Every bartender was friendly and helpful at any of the bars. They are very responsive on the app with any requests as well. The biggest drawback for us was the reception desk and rooms. At check in, after reserving a sea view room, we were given one on the bottom floor with a view of a walkway and it had an overwhelming smell of mold. We were actually told “sea view” didn’t guarantee a view of the ocean… despite having paid extra. That night we were moved to a downgraded room on the 5th floor, which still smelled like mold, with the promise of being upgraded the next day. We were indeed moved, this time to the 9th floor, and there was no mold smell. That room was perfect. Bottom line, the rooms have drastic differences. When I say mold smell, I mean so strong I could smell it on my clothes and face mask when I went outside the next morning. With this and some other questions, we were getting different answers from different people at the front desk. If it was not for the moldy rooms, which is downright a health issue, I would have given them 5 stars.

Fun time, great location, very noisy (review from a celiac)

We had a great time. We stayed at the Riu Palace because I had read (thank you Trip Advisor!) that the adults only property next door was under construction. It was, too. It smelled of adhesive and they had ares of the deck blocked off. They are replacing all of the balconies and it will be gorgeous when it's done. We will likely stay there next time. If you're deciding between the two- there you have it. Supposedly the construction will be done in December but the staff told me they've been pushing off the end date for months. Also, they are building a new hotel next door and there are only the steel beams of the frame up, I imagine it'll be under construction for a while. Back to the Palace- It's a beautiful place and a great location. You can walk right down the street to tons of restaurants and shops. There are bike rentals and scooter rentals available right outside of the driveway. Some families had kids and the kids appeared to be having a blast. We spent most of our time over at the adults property because they have a pool volleyball net and that's our thing. You have to get down pretty early to get a palapa or a good spot at the pool. The property was not fully booked and most of the good spots were taken by 7AM. It's good if you travel with an early riser! It's easier if you swap your towels out for dry ones the night before so you don't have to make a pit stop at the towel hut. Food- the food is typical Riu food. I've stayed at a few of the properties and it's all the same. BUT- Aruba is the kind of location where you should go out to eat! We loved the all inclusive aspect for drinks and random meals but there are so many great restaurants within walking distance, it's a shame not to try it. I'm celiac but don't get sick (so I never know if I've had gluten), I do eat gluten free and so can spot a good selection and attention to detail. Some of the staff did know which options were gluten free and they gave me a tour of the buffet so I could know what I could have; that meant a lot of no sauces, no desserts, nothing fried and no edits to the menus because everything is pre-prepared. If you don't like eggs, you'll definitely want to go out for breakfast! Fortunately, because Aruba has great food, it's not hard to find better things you CAN eat if you go off property. Diana's Pancakes Place was great- we ate there twice, Madam Jeanette ($10 taxi) even had GF dessert (chocolate mousse), Iguana Cantina was good and had lots of choices, Casa Tua has GF pizza. It was not hard finding GF at the restaurants. Still though, you're unlikely to find fries, friend anything or desserts that aren't ice cream. And now to the noise- if you have a good view a.k.a. on the pool side of the hotel, it will be very very loud in the evenings. There is a pier bar near the property (that was super fun) where they blare the music. The hotel also has the stage and they blare the music, too. So, it's essentially battle of the bands until around 11PM at the earliest. However, I would not want to be on the "other" views because then you'll be looking at the road with the dumpsters. Just prepare yourself that it'll be a bit of a party atmosphere. The ride to the airport cost us $35 in a taxi when we were leaving. We waited around for a while when arrived at the airport the first day there because it was disorganized. We booked directly through Riu (which I would recommend because I feel like we got a better room than we have gotten booking through other sites). They had a transport option, which we chose. Next time, we'll probably just grab a taxi at the airport and go to the hotel that way. There are tons of taxis waiting and the drivers like to talk about the island. WiFi- The wifi at the hotel was HORRIBLE. We missed a bunch of calls and texts. It was spotty at best where you would get 30 texts that you missed but if people tried to call they'd get a weird message. If it's really important for you to be connected, you probably want to pay for the better internet. It was frustrating that we had no signal so often. We tried all of the settings on our phones and it just wasn't working great. So, plan ahead for phone access if that's important to you. The Covid test to leave was easy. They have testing on property and a voucher for a free test. The site where you have to schedule it is a little confusing and so you may need to ask for help with entering the info. They are knowledgeable at the front desk about how to book your appointment. The results for our tests turned around in about 4-5 hours. Lastly, I know it's all inclusive but don't forget your money to tip! We tipped the guy at the beach every day to set up our chairs (only 2 of us, would have done more if it was more of us). We tipped the bartenders, we tipped the folks who made the coffees at the coffee bar, housekeeping, the guys that load and unload your bags, call the taxis and take care of things. I felt we were taken better care of because we took care of them and we also made sure to use our please and thank you. ;-) I hope this helped! We'll definitely go back and stay at the adult property, we're very much looking forward to it.

Amazing vacation at the RIU Palace!

Reviewed 21 november, 2021

We have been to several RIU's in the past and are pleased to say we had an amazing vacation at the RIU Palace. This was our second visit to this hotel but it had been 9 years since our first visit. We were initially a bit concerned reading some of the reviews, but after visiting for a week, we are happy to say we had a wonderful time. Room: Our room was located on the 8th floor with a beautiful view of both the pool and the ocean. The room was clean, functional and fully stocked. Beach: Just stunning - both the view and the water. If you want an umbrella, you do need to secure a seat early, but there is shade in a few spots. The staff on the beach do a good job of helping you to find shaded spots and inform you when an umbrella becomes free. A La Cartes: No reservation is required as it is first come, first served. The staff were all professional and did everything to make the experience very enjoyable. The variety of food offered was also a nice option. Buffet: There is a wide selection of different types of food offered here for all meals. Staff are friendly and continuously checking in to make sure your needs are met: Front Desk: The staff here were very friendly, always willing to help with answering questions and providing information various things to do around the island. Sunwing Reps: We had wonderful service from the Sunwing team, especially Ramphes Kelly. He helped us to arrange 3 dives for my husband as well as various other tours around the island. He even added us to his Whatsapp to ensure we got updates and answered our questions very promptly. He was knowledgeable, professional and a great story teller! Safety: We would go walking every night after dinner both on the street as well as the path behind the hotel that connects to all of the other hotels. It is well lit and very safe as many visitors are walking as well. We saw several security guards for the various hotels so never felt unsafe. Tours & Site Seeing: We did a number of guided tours as well as a few outings on our own including taking the bus into downtown. Everyone followed the COVID protocols, so there were no concerns. PCR Test: We booked a 7:00 am spot and there were already about a dozen people in line when we arrived. They were a tiny bit late starting (roughly 5 minutes) which upset a few other guests, but the whole process ran very smoothly once they started. We got our results emailed to us within 24 hours. Airport & Immigration Process: We had all of our required documents in place and everything went very smoothly. Our luggage was ready for us in a very short time and the whole immigration process went very quickly. Negative Reviews: We read about rooms which were damp but we did not have that experience at all. It is our understanding that if the air conditioning is taken off, this happens due to the humidity levels. We just adjusted the temperature to our liking. Overall: This was our first vacation since the pandemic. We did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions before booking to alleviate our fears. We had an absolutely wonderful time and no regrets! Beautiful beaches, great weather, delicious food, professional service and the hotel was immaculately kept as we observed cleaning staff working several times per day. We have been to the RIU in Jamaica, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Bahamas and Cuba. Aruba did not disappoint. Thank you to all of the staff for a wonderful and safe vacation!

Disappointed

Reviewed 20 november, 2021

We have stayed at many Riu’s and this was by far the most expensive and lowest quality. Food was mediocre. Alcohol was poor quality. The resort is in need of major repair. Tiles missing in the pool. Moisture and mold on the walls and ceiling. Website was not clear that the fusion restaurant requires males wear long pants.

The staff is very friendly. The Beach department is horrible: very crowded, very expensive. Beach staff is working only for tips. ‘Palapas’ are free for the guests. Staff started to work from 5:00 a.m., bring a lot of beach towels and occupied 85% palapas; they sale them during the day. Looks like it’s very organized. Corruption started from beach guys to assistant general manager EDGAR CORNET. We tried to discuss with him the situation on the beach but nothing changed in the next 7 days. Rooms are moldy, very humid, floors are slippery there and the steps up to your bed make for a hazardous trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The pillows were smell. Nightly scheduled entertainment was very loud and below average.
