A hotel of contrasts!

We had a warm welcome at the hotel and all reception staff were outstanding - friendly and managed requests I made without any fuss. We had no issues with the room which was clean and spacious. We could hear TV next door and people going past so the walls must be thin but wasn't a problem for us. It may be during busy periods. However, our dealings with staff in the bar and dining room were in sharp contrast. We almost felt like we were an inconvenience and a nuisance to them - not a smile nor a friendly word. We had a long wait for food but it was mostly good, especially the vegetarian wellington which I can recommend. But, being with Travelzoo meant we had a separate menu to that which was displayed, making us feel like the 'poor relations'! I was most disappointed with the lack of awareness regarding Covid. Only staff at reception wore masks, hand sanitisers were empty, and tables were not properly cleaned. In addition, there was a lot of dust in the dining room. Much of this may be from building work which was going on directly outside but I felt that it would've taken no time to run a duster over surfaces before serving meals. We wouldn't return, which says it all I think.

I booked a two night stay for my partner's birthday and the problems began from the offset. It took me three days to actually book the stay! I wanted to book the 'Unwind and Dine' package directly on the hotel's website, but the system wasn't allowing me to make payment. I called four times as well as emailing and each time was told the website was 'down' and was promised that someone would call me back, but never did. I spoke to several different people and none of them even knew about the deal or what it entailed. Eventually I managed to book the stay, but I honestly wished I hadn't. When we arrived, we waited a good 10 minutes whilst the receptionist was on the phone to someone else. No words of acknowledgment or even a glance towards us. We were eventually given keys to room 2 on the first floor. The room was very shabby and in desperate need of some decoration but that was to be the least of our worries. We had an evening meal included in the price with an allowance of £25 per person. We waited a rather long time to be served and the couple beside us had informed us they had waited 45 minutes for their dessert alone, so it wasn't looking good for us. We tried to order a bottle of Chardonnay to be told several minutes later, there was none, at any price. So we asked for a bottle of Sauvingnon Blanc with an embarrassed waitress returning once again to tell us they didn't have any. So third time lucky, we ordered a bottle of Chenin Blanc and were just happy to have a drink at this point. However, the waiting staff seemed to have little to no experience and plonked the bottle on the table. No pouring for us, and no wine cooler to accompany it. We had to ask 4 times for a wine cooler. This is meant to be a 4 star 'luxury' accommodation but they couldn't even get the basics right. Not to mention the dirty wall beside us where drinks had been spilled and not cleaned, or the mismatched cutlery. Considering Covid is still very much part of our lives, I did not see any cleaning taking place in the dining room, and there was the same crumbs on my seat the following morning when I went down to breakfast. The food was acceptable, but nothing special. My partner ordered the starter of pate and it came with the smallest 3 pieces of toast we have ever seen. He politely asked for some more and was ignored. He asked again, meanwhile another waiter came and tried to take his plate. A good 10 minutes later, I had long finished my starter, and a waiter threw down a whole bread bun on the table. Appallingly bad service. And so it continued... We had a terrible night with very noisy neighbours; the walls are so thin you can hear everything, and at 12.30am, the occupants in the next room were singing loudly and talking at the top of their voices. We complained to the night porter but when he knocked on the door he was met with shouting and abuse, and needless to say they did not quieten down. We hardly slept and felt very uncomfortable. In the morning, we spoke to the receptionist and asked to move rooms as I was so upset at this point I was ready to leave. I have to say we spoke to Dawn and she was very helpful, and sorted it so we could move to another room. She was the only saving grace of this place. We were moved to room 17 which was much smaller. The shower was so small I couldn't even lift my arms to wash my hair. But at this point all I wanted was a good night's sleep. We went for a sparkling cream tea in the afternoon but the man who served us kept asking if we wanted tea or coffee. We kept re-iterating that it was a sparkling cream tea we had booked and therefore wanted a glass of prosecco. 20 minutes later and after asking four times, we received our scones and glass of prosecco. There was literally no one else to be served at this point so can't understand how it took so long. It is my understanding the hotel is doing a cheap deal on another website and they kept thinking we had booked that deal, which we had not. No apologies for the wait, and no basic communication skills from the staff. At this point, I was so upset I broke down in tears. We returned to our room, and didn't want to go to dinner again after our previous experience. However, just as my partner and I settled down to rest, the fire alarm went off and we had to be evacuated. I was told it was because someone had taken a shower and not opened a window?! This was supposed to be a relaxing stay for my fiance's birthday but it was quite the opposite. I have come away feeling very anxious and disappointed. This has the potential to be a beautiful place, with the right training and care, but sadly it is so far away from that I cannot recommend. My partner and I have stayed at a lot of different hotels and never have I felt compelled to right a review, but I would hate to think that others would suffer the same disappointment we did.

Had a 2 night stay booked via Travel Zoo ,Hotel is a little difficult to find ,but once we found it the location was really peaceful. Our room was on the 2nd floor, no lift, and was rather small but well decorated and quiet, please note there are no wardrobes, only a small rail,or chest of drawers in the room so travel light. The food and staff were excellent ,we did have a slight problem with the dining arrangements, but this was sorted out very efficiently for us. The heating in our room was temperamental but fortunately the weather was quite mild during our stay.
