El Faro Unit 101

Reviewed 30 september, 2021

Perfect 6 day stay. The unit is large and spacious, and was perfect for a wheelchair user. The ramp up to the main entrance was a little steep, but with a little help we managed. The grounds are compact but immaculate, and the pool looking out to the ocean was beautiful. It was unusually busy for the end of September and the noise from the nightclubs at night was very loud. But during the day this little spot on the beach was tranquil. A very nice alternative to crowded AI resorts, especially during COVID.

El Faro Unit 403

Reviewed 27 september, 2021

This is my 6th time staying at El Faro / Reef Unit #403. It is absolutely a perfect location on 5th Ave. The unit is very quiet, well equipped, and has wonderful amenities. Its bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious and the rooftop lounge area/grill area is an added bonus. As a side note: They have had the same masseuse (Maria) for the last 6 years. She works every day and has a beautiful cabana that is attached to El Faro's pool. It is honestly the best massage I have ever had and it's only $35 for 50 minutes. She wears a mask and it's outside facing the ocean breeze. The table is very comfortable and the linens are extremely clean. You must do this several times while you are there!

Horrid customer service

Reviewed 21 july, 2021

I had a horrible experience with the customer service here. Upon arriving, we were told we could check in an hour early at 3:00 PM (we arrived at 1:00 PM, so we went to lunch, then returned). We went up to the room at 3:00 PM and there was a housekeeper inside cleaning. So we spent the first hour of our vacation sitting on the property steps, waiting for the housekeeper to finish. The next debacle occurred when the porter lost our bag and the front desk denied it repeatedly. The disrespect when we insisted my father handed the bag to the porter was ridiculous. The woman at the front desk denied it vehemently - as a customer service rep, wouldn't it be better to pretend you believe the customer, even if you don't? I even asked to see the cameras and the woman said I could see them the next day. The next day, they told us they'd found the bag and handed it to us. Asinine. The third problem was that we were only given one key card when we checked in because the machine was broken. We came as a family and had planned to split up, so this was a persistent issue during our stay. They didn't even tell us when the machine was fixed - we had to ask for our extra key cards ourselves. Also, there's a major seaweed problem that another reviewer mentioned. Playa Del Carmen's beaches are covered in it, and it smells terrible - sort of like fish. I know you're imagining some strands of seaweed, but it is enormous piles - sort of like mountains of brown seaweed that makes it impossible to swim in the ocean. Please research before you decide to visit. The main upside of this property was the pool, which was Hollywood quality. I would return for the pool alone if there was anything redeeming about the customer service. The location was also perfect - right in the heart of Playa Del Carmen, near restaurants and bars.

El Faro Reef 101 Was Amazing!

Reviewed 27 june, 2021

We had a wonderful time on this property! It’s a great location. Close to everything. Aside from the sargasso (which is out of anyone’s control) it was a relaxing yet fun filled 11 days. Everyone was friendly and helpful! Roger with Caribbean Beach Properties was quick in response to requests. Security was always present. We felt very safe and will definitely return!

Nice condo, horrible seaweed situation.

Reviewed 27 june, 2021

The condo was great, pool was nice and the grounds were well kept. Our condo was exactly what the pictures showed and was clean. We loved our rooftop patio and plunge pool! My biggest complaint is the horrendous sulfur smell that came for the mounds of seaweed piling up on the beach. The beautiful turquoise water that you see in the pictures was a seaweed filed brown. Day after day the seaweed piles got bigger and bigger and the smell did not get better. The beach and water in front of the complex was completely unusable. We were made aware that it had been brought in by a storm but how long it would be there was unknown. We actually left a day early just to get away from the smell. I have stayed at el faro in the past and loved it but I will not be head back down anytime soon.
