Unwanted Room Guests (Bugs) - Not as Advertised

Reviewed 14 april, 2021

We booked a room in early April 2021 based on some reviews and their website description. Booking was seamless after a phone call and an email exchange. Upon our arrival, checkin also went well, although we noticed no one else on the property other than the gentleman that checked us in. We also noticed an excessively large amount of ants around the pool area. After checkin, we drove around to check out the area, returning around 6pm. According to their website, “As of mid December until the beginning of May, our on site restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Dine by the pool, listening to some lounge music from Europe. Let us tempt you with fresh pastas, original antipastos, fresh fish, wine from northern Italy and home made desserts.” When we went down for dinner, we were told there was no dinner and that we’d have to drive into Samara for food. There certainly was no lounge music from Europe. We came back from dinner around 9pm, again to an empty parking lot. We definitely were the only ones staying there. Walking into our room, we were greeted with hundreds of black “tick-lick” bugs all over the bed and walls and in our clothes and luggage. We went down and spoke to the night guard, who arranged for a different room two doors down from where we were and on the same side of the building. Seeing other bugs around that room we decided it would be best to not stay there as we had little confidence at that point that the new room wouldn’t be infested with bugs as well. So, we packed up and did the 2hr drive back to our Costa Rica home base in Tamarindo. I contacted the hotel two days later requesting a refund of our stay. They said they would look into it, but after 3 days went by with no response, I contacted them again and they said they had decided not to give us a refund since they offered us a new room which we refused. They also said that they weren’t ticks and that’s just the way things are in Costa Rica. I always hate to right a bad review, especially in Costa Rica where things always seem to be Pura Vida. However in this case, I feel compelled to warn folks about this place as not being suitable for those requiring a bug-free room.

We drove from Tamarindo and got here at 15.30. The room was not ready, they had to fix the air conditioning. The air conditioning never worked, so we slept or tried to sleep in a stifling room. Forget about taking a shower, it only has cold water. There is not even a tea pot or coffee maker in the room. I don’t watch TV but if you wanted to watch TV, the screen is so small, that your computer most likely has a larger screen!

Rescued by Paradise

Arrived in Samara in the evening and the other hotel we had booked had no record of our booking! Fortunately, the staff at Montelaguna were able to find a way to accommodate our need for two rooms and we are so very happy that they did! The rooms, common areas, proximity to the wonderful Playa Carillo, food and staff made us feel relaxed and delighted that a mistake brought us to this paradise and we stayed for several days. We definitely are looking forward to returning.

Pura Vida

We spent one week here and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is clean with a awesome swimming pool. The location is outstanding with Carrillo beach on one side and Samara on the other. Samara beach is a few minute walk from the hotel and boasts gorgeous sunsets. The food is excellent, we ate all 3 of the meals and they were really good. The breakfast included has lots of choices of fresh fruit, eggs, sausage, pancakes and some tasty Tico dishes. What really makes this place is having “Luigi” running the dining area. What a hard working, awesome guy. He made our stay that much more enjoyable by just being him. The hotel is very lucky to have someone like him looking after their guests. We will be back soon.

Spent 3 nights and will return, one day. Hotel is small, on a beautifully kept property. Luigi welcomed us and was so friendly and helpful. Rooms CLEAN and spacious. WI-Fi was strong and AC was cold. Our room was on 2nd floor with balcony away from pool, for privacy this may be the best pick, all others face pool. Pool area is a nice place to chill, pool is welcoming after a trip to the beach. Beautiful Carrillo beach is 5 minutes away by car. We ate at the restaurant all 3 nights. Manuel helped us each night with food and wine picks, he is an asset to the hotel, enjoyed hearing about his life and family. Food and wine were above average. Breakfast was served each morning and my only suggestion would be to make coffee serve your self, there's just too much for one person to tend to and serve coffee. All of the staff was friendly and always greeted you with a smile. This is a well kept, well run hotel. If you're looking for a place to unwind and explore the area you will not regret this as a choice.
