Very poor overnight stay. Lodge room 1 is unacceptable and should not be in use. The over powering smell of air freshener upon our arrival to our room was masking the smell of a foul odour. As reception was closed we had to complain via the restaurant. We were informed the odour was coming from unused toilets outside our room. This was very clear from the smell. Reception was closed at 18:00 hours this is not practical or an effective way to provide good customer service. We could hear the guests above us flushing their toilet and taking showers. It was far from a relaxing stay and we were so thankful it was for one night only. Reception then claimed the next day on check out they had never had a complaint about the smell previously. I was horrified to read a tripadvisor review from a guest staying in the exact same room and having the exact same experience. Clearly this was not a one off issue. Very disappointed in our experience as this was a gift from my sister and brother in law. They were offered 10% off their next stay which is a poor gesture.
Need to raise their game a bit

This was our first visit to Portavadie, we had heard such good things about it and, after a very trying 18months, we decided to treat ourselves to a luxury staycation. Perhaps our previous love affair with cruising has spoiled us in terms of expectations about accommodation, service and food. We stayed in a studio apartment overlooking the slip for the Tarbert Ferry. We brought our well behaved dog with us (£20 supplement for him). On initial inspection the apartment was bright, airy and clean. However, on further investigation a few maintenance issues were apparent…..curtains faded and hem down, a previous furry visitor had obviously had a chew at the the corner of the back of the sofa which had been roughly repaired and the cupboard door on the integrated fridge was in need of replacement. Is there mo routine inspection of accommodation, no proactive repairs carried out? This particular apartment is in need of a refurbishment so that Portavadie can lay claim to the high star rating quoted,
The room rate was £174 per night including breakfast. It should be noted that, due to the pandemic, only the main restaurant is open so it is recommended that you book a table for your preferred dining times. The restaurant is bright and airy, service is ok. You need to download the Portavadie app for menus as none are provided at the table. On offer are fish, steaks, burger and a vegetarian/vegan option. There is no chef special of the day, nor a table d’hote menu. I believe food is available to take away but we did not use this option. Food was ok, nothing special. The first night hubby had the lamb dish, I had fish and chips. We shared a trio of ice cream for dessert. Without drinks, the bill was £52.50 excluding tip, quite expensive for what is, after all standard fare. Of course, you are paying for the surroundings.
Breakfast offers a choice of continental and/or cooked options. Friends who had previously stayed at Portavadie raved about the breakfast. It was ok but we wouldn’t rave about it. Don’t get me wrong here, we are not moaning minnies, if something is excellent, we do not hesitate to say so. The second morning of our stay, my hubby ordered smoked haddock and a poached egg. What he got was a tiddler….half a fish with the egg. When the issue was raised with the duty manager, he spoke with the chef and reported that this is a standard portion, that it is an attempt to minimise waste, if a guest wants more, they only have to ask for it. Is this really acceptable in an establishment aspiring to four or five stars?
Having said all that, we enjoyed our stay. Would we return? No

4 of us came for my birthday.
Good food & cocktails (Paradise) highly recommend the lamb!
Friendly/accomodating staff especially Lewis
Lovely birthday dessert made
Warm water not working
Light in bathroom not working
Dinner on the first night the staff bought out meals for 3 of my party and the wrong meal for my self i waited 10 minutes for my meal (my meal was taken off the bill)
Sauna not in use in the spa
Given the price that was paid , we had high expectations.
But thanks to Lewis who assisted when issues were raised. We had a card apologizing for the carpet being so filthy and needed replaced. Unsure why the carpet could not have been cleaned prior, there was irn bru stains and what looked like dog pee stains.
Lewis showed us around the luxury apartments prior to our departure and they were lovley, like night and day to the cottages.
The most expensive glass of Prosecco with no price list to warn you available

This is a very special place. They have definitely got it right here. I love coming to Portavadie for a break.
I have one bug bear. I asked for a wine list and they didn’t have one. I ordered a glass of Prosecco and was charged £8.50 for a 125ml glass. The bottle is £25. So a glass was over double the bottle price. I find this shocking and you can’t see the prices. Even online it doesn’t tel you Prosecco is £8.50 a glass.
Maybe not a big deal to some people but have 3 glasses and you’ve paid for the bottle. This doesn’t happen with the wine and the glass prices of wine are shown.
Wonder if it was deliberate to leave the price off because it’s so inflated and shocking. I complained and no one cared so we left the bar.
It was ok

Checked in and was told by pointing at a map where everything was and told to down load app. Ok for some people but not everyone wants to do that, I always prefer a paper copy but I guess it’s the way forward nowadays. We were on a back row motorhome pitch with semi loch view. Large pitch but nothing to it just a bit of grass and gravel. Quite nice showers etc down next to reception but I believe there are some more basic ones next to the camping pitches.
We had some very nice takeaway fish n chips although expensive, very fresh and tasty.
The shop was well stocked with gifts and a few sweets, drinks and clothing. Didn’t experience anything else.
Very handy for ferry to Tarbert. I will return if in the area again but is quite expensive at £35 compared to the next nearest in price we paid at £23.
