Large rooms, great location, AMAZING service

Reviewed 28 september, 2022

We stayed one night before flying home after a family event. We ran out of wipes for the 1 year old and the staff put our Uber CVS order in the room for us. They also provided a travel crib. Then, my 5 year old started vomiting in the middle of the night and the front desk staff provided us with extra linens not once, but TWICE. The service from start to finish was amazing and I will definitely stay here again when visiting Portland. Oh yeah- rooms large and clean, good breakfast, great downtown location!

Not bad

Rooms were big and comfortable, location is great, and the hotel is generally pretty quiet. The rooms weren't very clean, though, the treadmills in the gym are kinda broken, and the breakfast isn't very good at all. It's pretty expensive for what you get; I'm on the fence if I'd stay here again.

Great long weekend trip

Reviewed 21 september, 2022

We stayed here for Labor Day weekend. It was our first time in Portland and the location was perfect. Parking was expensive ($30 per night) but we thought it was reasonable compared to other hotels and remembering you are in a city so you would have to pay to park anywhere you go. This was definitely the better option than staying further outside of the city and driving in. We only ended up moving our car once during our trip when we traveled a little outside of the city for some site seeing. Other than that, we were able to walk to all of the museums we wanted to go to and the waterfront and restaurants. The location was definitely perfect. The breakfast offerings were good (as expected for a Hampton Inn). I've stayed at many Hampton Inns as a Hilton Honors member and this is one of the best. We found the hotel to be clean and service was good. When we checked in we had asked for housekeeping to come each day and they did. We would definitely stay here again if we were to return to Portland.

Not a Good Value

Reviewed 16 september, 2022

My wife and I vacation in Maine every year and usually stay at the Hampton Inn in Portland because of the location which is on Fore Street at the edge of the downtown area. It is also a short walk to Commercial Street by the ferry landing. Although it is a good location, we will likely not be back. It is really a family oriented setting which we tolerate but the quality of services has dramatically dropped since our last stay there pre-pandemic. Like most hotels, the Hilton chain has really embraced the Covid related reduction of service model that used to be consistent with reduction of exposure between guests and staff that resulted in quests having to make their own beds and clean up their own rooms for days unless they called for some part of the room to be cleaned or linens/towels to be replenished. OK, that was then but this is now. We stayed for 4 nights and never had our room cleaned. We had to call for clean towels, Kleenex and washcloths. I do appreciate the increased privacy but not at the cost of cleanliness and comfort. I would not call this a rip-off but it comes close. These businesses are taking advantage of the pandemic to boost their bottom line by decreasing services which includes laying off staff like chambermaids. Time to re-think this. This hotel is a medium quality setting with bare essentials and low quality items like towels and bedding. The pillows are useless because they are at the end of their service cycle as was the bedding. And, the sheets were thin and appeared to be a blend of cotton and polyester which increases durability but has much reduced comfort. The mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, furniture and electrical fixtures) seemed functional but are all very basic. The wi-fi room key app was an exception. Of course the breakfast that comes with the stay is not high or even medium quality but that is something families like because they can avoid the chaos and expense of taking the kiddies to a restaurant in the morning. We rarely partake but sometimes grab a muffin or banana if early in the morning (like 6:00 a.m. when they open for breakfast) but we did like that coffee was available almost all day. We used to tolerate the lack of professional staff, loud kids, crowded elevators and such because it used to be a good location for the price. However, the valet parking was $30/day (that is a ripoff) and the staff with which we interacted were often not knowledgable or were annoyingly rude and loud. One morning the three people at the lobby front desk (opens to lounge/eating area) were actually yelling and laughing very loudly for an extended period of time which really kills any idea that you are at a reasonable place. All in all, this hotel has really gone downhill and whatever value we thought came from staying at a medium to low quality hotel with a good location is now gone. Expensive for the services provided (clean your own room) and the type of setting (family/economy oriented). Too bad.

Best ever Hampton Inn.

Reviewed 10 september, 2022

Having priced a stay at another hotel in the area, we found this Inn to be less than half the cost of the other hotel. The manager was very cordial, the room was very nice. The shower had a well-placed grab bar. We get too hot with duvets on beds, and were easily able to get cotton ones. The breakfast room was large and attractive.
