We had a lovely stay here the week prior to Christmas. The inn was bustling on the weekend with young people enjoy a weekend get away. It was very clean, and the staff was kind and attentive. There is a nice continental breakfast with a variety of items and these delicious muffins, fresh coffee and cookies in the evening. It is a historic hotel with no elevator so if lugging a suitcase is a problem, I suggest booking early and requesting a lobby level room. If you don’t like feather pillows, request a regular one. The parking lot is small, but there is street parking on the small side road. The area seems safe and secure. The price and location just can’t be beat.

I booked a trip to Portland and wanted a hotel that was safe, affordable, and comfortable - and this hit all the boxes! The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating for a late night check-in, and there was always a friendly face at the desk to say "Hi." My room and in-hall bathroom were very private and comfortable, which was especially nice as a solo female traveller. Most things are either within walking distance or a short drive away, and the Dunkin next door is great to have!

Lovely stay with a little spook

Our stay at the Inn at St. John was lovely. The staff at the front desk were very kind and thorough during check in. They were also very happy to answer any questions. Parking was free. We had space to park most of the time except for one time we parked on the street which was fine. Our room was 1A. We had a lot of luggage since our trip was a week long and Portland was part of a two day stop on our road trip. We knew that this Inn did not have an elevator so we packed 2 days worth of clothes in our small carry ons. This made it much easier on the stairs. Please consider this when choosing this hotel. I did receive an email a week before hand to let them know if you need a first floor room. The room was very clean and I appreciated the fanned tissue paper and towels. It added a nice touch. I also enjoyed the free cookies and apple cider at noon and the free breakfast in the morning. The room rates were a really good price compared to other places. With that being said, you cant expect large spaces and large bathrooms. This is a historic Inn and rooms were made smaller then. The rooms are relatively small and so is the bathroom. The shower was made for only one person to fit in but it was fine. I feel like the free parking, wifi, snacks, and breakfast were definitely added values that I enjoyed. My boyfriend and I did feel like the room we stayed at was haunted because one of our carry-ons was in a different spot in the room when we came back after filling up our water bottles and putting the parking pass in the car. On the first night around 11 pm, my backpack fell off the safe when it was sitting there since we checked it. It also didn’t fall forward but to the side. It was a little weird but didn’t seem harmful. Apart from that weird experience, our stay was fairly comfortable and the staff were very kind! I definitely enjoyed the cookies!

Exorbitant Price for Sub-standard Accommodation

Abominable! Room 105 is in an annex at back of inn, much like being in a garage. There’s spongy tile on the bathroom walls, a plastic mattress cover over a sagging mattress, no closet, a miniature dust-laden wall heater, and one small window crammed with an air conditioner for the entire space. We were charged an exorbitant pre-paid non-refundable fee of $169 plus tax and management would not issue even a partial refund. Do not stay here.

Caring staff and lovely hotel!

The staff was accommodating when my travel dates changed and even sent me something I left behind in my room after checkout. I wanted to stay in a classic New England inn and I found the perfect place! Portland is very walkable and it was no trouble to get to the waterfront and historic district. The hotel offers many types of rooms so I was easily able to find one in my price range.
