Not Hospitable and Overpriced

Reviewed 17 september, 2022

I don't write reviews often but feel compelled to do so. We are staying here two times. One night at the beginning of a Backroads trip and one night at the end. On the second stay I am feeling the same way. This hotel does not even compare to the others we have stayed at this week. There is a room refrigerator with no water. There is a soda machine on the 3rd floor with a sign that says out of order. The lobby has coffee and tea until 11am because there are not machines in the room. After that the table in the lobby is completely cleaned off. No water or anything. Not welcoming or hospitable. It is noticeable that management has not responded to any of the comments here.

Disinterested, disgruntled staff

Reviewed 7 september, 2022

Every interaction I participated in or observed between hotel staff and hotel guests was ROUGH. Staff behind the desk seem annoyed people have chosen to spend their money here. They were at various times either rude, patronizing, completely disengaged and I actually overheard several catty conversations among staff behind the desk in which they were talking about hotel guests right in front of other hotel guests. Several people in line clocked it. Even making basics calls down for extra towels or wine glasses made you feel as if you were REALKY putting the staff out by needing anything. Hosts also knew very little about the area - or maybe they did but were just very annoyed to be asked. Valets were lovely, but all in all I’d say: If you don’t care about feeling welcome, it’s an okay place to spend a few nights. If customer service is important to your experience, stay far away from this hotel.

Five star service, three star room

Reviewed 1 september, 2022

I can't say enough the friendly, efficient, accommodating, and courteous staff, especially the valet service, on which we relied multiple times between check-in and check-out. The location is great for access to the shopping, dining, and sightseeing at the waterfront a couple of blocks away. (The only caveat is that the two blocks are rather steep, so that the climb may be difficult for some visitors. The waterfront hotels might be advisable in that case. But you can always stop and shop to catch your breath!) However, we were rather disappointed in our room. I checked the website description and, to be sure, we were not promised anything that we found missing. But these days one expects a desk at which to write, use a computer, and eat. I know that we were in the old part of the hotel, but I think that a desk could be exchanged for the long, fairly useless piece of furniture under the TV. There was a small (c. 18" x 18") table at child's table height, with a hassock under it, which might not allow enough room for some adults' thighs to fit under the table. There was a stuffed chair with an ottoman which I suppose could serve as a low table if you perched on the edge of the chair. As it was, we ate our room service dinner sitting cross-legged on our beds. (Note to kitchen: how about sending two trays with any two meals to "deluxe" rooms, so we'd have some resistance when we try to cut meat on our beds?)

A very nice hotel.

Easy to get to. Downtown Portland is a very busy place in the summer so travel is a bit slow. A bit pricey as well but again being in the old section of Portland during peak season usually generates higher charges. Our room was clean and quiet. Staff were very attentive and helpful. I would have given it an excellent rating save for the breakfast. We paid extra for the bed and breakfast package and had the eggs benedict. It was rather bland, chewy and not hot. My sense was it had been premade, rewarmed and then served. Neither one of us finished the meal.

Fabulous location in the middle of the Portland waterfront.

Wonderful hotel with exceptional service. The location near the waterfront was perfect. Parking is $25 a night, which at the price we paid, seemed a bit pricey. Room was large and beds were comfortable. The restaurant was fine for breakfast. Nice bar and also an outside bar/restaurant. The main reason to stay here is the location.
