Brecon Beacons hike
My wife and I stayed at Foyles for a couple of nights as a base to do a long hike in the Brecon Beacons. We had a fantastic stay - the service was amazing, the food and accommodation first class and the weather was stunning which was an added bonus. We couldn’t recommend the hotel enough. Thanks for a great stay!
Beautifully decorated rooms
Our room was beautifully clean and tidy. The decor was well designed and of a good quality. All in all a comfortable room. Staff were friendly however service was in need of improvement. Maybe due to Covid they were running on a restricted number of staff. There was no one on reception upon our arrival so we had to wait (maybe 5 mins). The bar was always staffed so could easily get a drink. The biggest problem was breakfast we had to wait for tea/coffee maybe 10 mins. Orders for food were then taken, but turned up very muddled. Toast came first but staff were unaware of which table it was for - only three tables seated! This came about 10mins after the tea, We then had to wait at least 30mins for cooked breakfast and again staff were wandering from table to table asking if this was for them. Breakfast in all took about hour and 10. What could have been a nice end to our stay left us disappointed
Nice but could of been better.
Just returned for the second time from a night away at Foyles but unfortunately left there disappointed. We paid £189 for the Fizz package which consists of bubbly with our dinner, a room with breakfast and dinner. Our main gripe is that our room was directly above the laundry room. We had the washing machine and tumbler on until 2am then waking us up at 6.30 again. Upon telling the owner about this we wasn't offered any kind of goodwill gesture just "thanks for the feedback". We didn't receive our fizz either which was no big deal but did get given a mini bottle of prosecco upon departure when I raised the fact we never had it. The food was OK. Steak n ale pie was disappointing and service was poor. My wife had sea bream that she said was beautiful. Breakfast was very good. Would we stay here again?? Possibly, would certainly stay away from room no.5. Shame as its a stunning place in a nice location.
Superb Food but Service Disappointed
Foyle’s is a posh pub. The food is excellent (but is priced accordingly - starters were up to £13 for scallops, but they were beautiful and worth the money). Other regular pub type dishes also on offer like fish and chips and pie and chips and these were beautifully presented and tasted delicious and weren’t overpriced. Unfortunately the service was a bit hit and miss. We had to ask three times for sauces and an item was missed off the order. The waiting staff didnt seem to us to be well organised. Typically we would expect one waitress or waiter to be looking after us and one or two other tables for the evening. They would take drinks and food orders and be our single point of contact throughout the evening. That is the difference between a proper restaurant and a pub. The food was definitely restaurant quality but the service was much more like we’d expect in a pub. If you are paying £25 or more a head for food alone with drinks on top, I think it is reasonable to expect a better standard of service than you might expect from a pub where dinner might cost you £15-20 per head for food. The waiting staff looked the part - good smart uniforms but they didn’t appear to have had the training to match. Stacking plates on a table when clearing up is a big “no no” as is forgetting to bring items that have bee requested more than once. It seemed the waiting staff was passing on our request to someone else rather than dealing go with it themselves. I suggest giving each waiter and waitress a few tables and getting them to look after them and nothing else. They can then stagger service so that everything does t happen at once. That’s the way a quality restaurant does it and if this can be achieved I think the experience would be much the better as a result.
Despite COVID-19 Foyles' displayed all the hallmarks of a well oiled ship!
The hotel is pristine; contemporary/chic public areas: bar, lounge, dining areas. The rooms are clean, classic-to-contemporary. Nothing moth-eaten here or old-fashioned! The staff catered to our every whim and ensured that our stay was a warm and welcoming one (despite the blustery winds outside!). The hotel has positively adapted to all changes brought on by COVID-19 - cleanliness, hygiene standards and all precautionary measures are observed, without impacting the service and standards. The food menu is simple but not unnecessarily exhaustive and the meals are well executed. The bar area is chic with emphasis on gin but with well-deserved nods to other fine spirits. The following isn't really a negative or gripe, but more of an 'observation': when you first enter the hotel you have to conduit/meander through the bar/seating area to the check-in room. This can be disconcerting when you are wheeling in your luggage and your sundries and other personal stuff that you don't want to display to other guests! In other words there is no side entrance or dedicated entrance for in-stay hotel guests from the car park.
