Amazing Luxurious resort!

First of all, I can’t believe all the bad reviews I’m seeing on TripAdvisor. My wife and I went to Luxury Ambar resort for our honeymoon, and we loved it! --- The place and amenities: --- The moment we arrived, they gave us cool towels in the lobby and a nice fresh blue drink. We were impressed by the ambiance of the place, the lobby especially, which was big, classy-looking and always clean. The streets are also really nice, paved with beautiful plants, lights and there's even speakers that play lounge music. After we walked around the other bahia principe resorts, the luxury ambar was definitely the best looking one and it’s adults only. The nice thing with Ambar is that all of the rooms are close to the pool, which is not far from the beach. Our room is probably around 5 minutes to the beach. We also mentioned it was for a honeymoon so they gave us a “door sash” that says Honeymoon, a champagne bottle and chocolates. The coffee shop & sports bar was also a very nice surprise and there were special items there that aren’t available in the buffet, (example chicken wings are the best I ever had!) We went to the coffee shop everyday, they have very good frappes! It's always super clean everywhere! There's employees cleaning up regularly, and at the beach there's also a truck/tractor that's picking up the seaweed on the shore. There's even a really friendly guy passing by often, brushing off the sand on the beach chairs! There's also casino and disco inside the bahia principe village, you need a cab from Ambar but it was fast and there's cabs 24/7. The disco is really lit, so many people partying. There was also late night snacks at Las Olas, which i believe is open during the night and we went around midnight. We paid extra for a romantic dinner by the beach, but it was so worth it! Very intimate experience, we never had anything like this. Giovanny, our server took care of us so well, and even took so many pictures of us as part of the deal. 4 course meal, great music, and just being so close to the beach, it was very romantic. As residents in Ambar, we can access the other Bahia Principe hotel lobbies, shops and events like live music, but not the kids-only parts like the Waterpark and the exclusive Fantasia palaces. Having this option is really amazing! The restaurants are really impressive, the decor/theme is perfect, staff is great, and the food is very good. There was a Teppanyaki restaurant where we got a nice show. The MEAT restaurant had such a nice look and ambiance inside as well, meats were very good, and the custom cocktails were really nice and paired well with the meats. The brazilian churrascarias were also amazing, and one is so close to the beach, so also very romantic. One poor experience we had was at the Tequila restaurant where we waited so long for the food, and the fajitas did not have sauce that it came with (what kind of fajitas don’t come with salsa!). Other than that, all of the restaurants were great, just have to reserve since they fill up fast! We made sure to reserve most of them when we arrived, but someone helped us so it was really easy. We ordered room service a few times (it’s good 24/7), and the food was good (nachos, beef wraps, chicken burger), and it was fairly quick (less than 30 minutes). --- The beach: --- The only downside around this time (June) is the seaweed. There were a few days that it was less and we were able to go into the water. My wife really cannot stand seaweed so when it's a lot, we just sun-bathe and walk. The seaweed doesn't take away from the beauty of the beach, though. The water is turquoise, and luke warm, very comfortable. There were locals selling things at the beach. They don’t impose too much so it’s ok, but just be careful when you buy, depending on how/if you negotiate, most prices are higher than at the lobby shops or in the airport duty-free. --- The service: --- The service we got from the workers was absolutely incredible and always friendly coming multiple times to serve us without even us asking. The pool is also beautiful and has a swim-up bar! It was so great to order a drink while you’re in the pool. There’s also employees serving drinks around the pool area often, and even up to the beach! During the hot afternoon chilling under the hut or sun-bathing, it was just so great that someone delivers the drinks right where you are. They are so friendly, and the orders came fairly quickly. The drinks offered always had a generous supply of liquor and very good quality (make sure to have the blue lagoons & pina coladas there definitely worth it!) We got a special service at breakfast with some of the workers (one of the employees name was Lucas) at the Las Brisas restaurant and they were very friendly and make us feel very welcome. Actually every time we ate the workers always served us with a smile and came very fast to refill our waters and get us any drinks we asked for in a timely manner. Also at the lobby area there was a woman serving us drinks in the evening (didn’t get her name but she wore a floral headband) and always came to talk with us, when she saw us remembering us even though she wasn’t our server. All of the servers at the lobby area are friendly also, frequently coming to tables to check if everything’s good and just get orders, sometimes chat. There was also an ice-cream guy roaming around in the afternoon around the streets and pool areas. Also I was super impressed with the entertainment team: they were very animated, full of fun and I loved all the activities that they had including an evening beach party (it was awesome!), pool party on Canada day with foam and pool balls, and a server serving drinks from a boat in the pool! Live band music and dancers. I never seen anything like it, that was a real treat! There were shows every evening, and they were great, including the burlesque show, hollywood night (performers impersonating pop stars), interactive game shows. Occasionally, they also opened the dance floor to everyone. We also had the nicest cleaning lady, Ignacia, who always greeted us every morning when we get out of the room, and made us some nice "towel art" with the local red flowers. Everything is all included, as expected, and there was never any pressure from anyone from tips, which was nice. We usually gave tips since we really loved the service and they deserved the extra tips for their kind & friendly attitude. In all, excellent place and already thinking about going back to luxury ambar. :)

Very fair review - pros and cons

I wouldn't normally write a review on a holiday as me and my partner are genuinely opposed to 'moaning' but felt it necessary in this case, especially reading the other recent reviews from people who seem to have shared a similar experience. This particular all inclusive holiday was advertised as a '5 star, platinum resort' on the TUI website, which we feel is an extremely generous rating for this place. However, it may be rated this in comparison to other resorts in the Dominican republic, rather than what you would expect in Europe, just a guess really. The service from the hotel staff was very hit and miss, some staff were excellent, friendly and went above and beyond whereas others weren't so friendly and we often felt bothersome when politely ordering or requesting things. Although tipping was not mandatory, we felt that it was expected and noticed a big difference in the drinks and food service when they were tipped compared to not tipped (and that the higher tipping guests seemed to receive extra special treatment). As the holiday was supposed to be all inclusive, we only took dollars to tip at meal times but felt we had to tip for every drink too, therefore we ran out of money quite quickly and felt guilty when we were unable to tip for drinks towards the end of the holiday. My partner and I both have very normal jobs in the NHS and have saved up all year to be able to afford this holiday, so finding out we needed a lot of money to tip whilst we were there to receive decent service was disappointing. When I asked if the hotel could do anything special for my partner's birthday, they said that the only thing they could do was put a banner on our room door, however this banner never arrived. I would have expected them offer a birthday package to make his day a little more special but this was not offered, especially as I saw that a lot of other parties had birthday decorations laid out on their meal time tables and a big fuss was made (again, maybe they were big tippers?). Our room was lovely and spacious, and looked exactly as it did on the website photos. The bed was huge and the room was very clean. The shower head however was extremely scabby and didn't look very appealing, but we looked past that as the rest of the room was nice. Our room toilet broke during our stay and didn't get fixed for over 24 hours, and we had to go back to reception three times to ask for it to be fixed. The room cleaning was excellent some days with great attention to detail, however some days our room didn't get seen to at all, despite hanging the 'please clean' notice on the door for the whole of the afternoon. On a couple of occasions we put our towels down in the shower area to be replaced as we had used them a couple of times, but they were not replaced and the dirty towels were hung up to be re-used. The rooms had extremely thin walls and you could hear word for word what the people in the next rooms were saying, which was not ideal for us as we were woken up on several mornings by other guests at 5am and some nights kept awake by other guests until 4am. The pool area as a whole was nice, and we enjoyed the music and dancing put on by the entertainment team, especially the pool party on the Thursday afternoon. My partner and I are in our mid-twenties and therefore we enjoy this type of thing, however I don't think it was much appreciated by the older guests. There was a lady who came and took drinks orders around the pool who was absolutely lovely (Desiree), and the cocktails and drinks offered at the pool bar were amazing. There was however a constant bad smell around the pool bar area, and the pool didn't appear to be very well chlorinated. The activities around the pool were good on the whole, but weren't very well advertised so we missed out on quite a few things. The activities were very basic, however the entertainment team were excellent and did the best they could with what they had. The beach was stunning with plenty of sun beds, however seaweed is a huge problem there, making the sea extremely unpleasant to go in. The food at the breakfast buffet was incredible, I have never seen so much choice. The chefs who stand and cook the omelettes and eggs were also amazing, always chirpy and happy to help. The lunch buffet was also nice, plenty of choice and different food choice every day. We would highly recommend eating at a different a la carte restaurant each night, including the ones in the surrounding hotels. The food there is world class and of a much higher standard than the evening buffets. It is essential to ensure that as soon as you check in you download the Bahia app, and book the restaurants you want to eat in for the full week, as if you don't, you will miss out (they get booked up extremely fast). Even though the food was lovely to eat, be very careful as I was ill for the whole of my last week there. I had abdominal pain and extreme diarrhoea from day 7 of my stay at the hotel, which lasted for 6 days and ruined my last week. I can only assume this was down to the food as I never drank the tap water or ate anywhere else. My partner also experienced this towards the end of our holiday. We wanted to report the illnesses to reception, however due to the frosty reception we had received previously on a couple of occasions and the very unfriendly member of staff who checked us out we didn't feel like we could, or that we'd even be listened to. To conclude, the trip was nice but I wouldn't say that on the whole it was a 'luxury' experience, and as I wasn't well, this put a big downer on the last week. If you can afford to put big tips down for everything you do then maybe it will be a different experience, however we just didn't have the money for this. We wouldn't stay here again for the price we paid, and to be honest it has put us off holidaying again in the Dominican.


Good Family Vacation

We finally arrived for our long awaited family vacation with our adult children. Overall, the stay was nice. The food at the buffet was quite good, but the specialty restaurants were a disappointment. We tried a few of them... I planned this vacation from the beginning of the pandemic (we postponed twice) so I got to speak to the Bahia Principe reservations several times, and each time I'd made sure they understood my needs, which I requested clearly: a suite with 2 beds for my 3 children. Well, upon arrival, that did not materialize because the hotel does not have 2 beds in corner suites. What?!?! I only asked repeatedly. What gives my review another star is the service staff and their dedicated willingness to accomodate you. That they did. They made sure we were happy, but it soon became clear to me the managerial shortfall...: little communication between reservations and hotel staff and a policy of no refunds for a necessary downgrade to a regular room with 2 beds to get my son out of an uncomfortable cot they brought to the suite. BEWARE! I heard other people with the same complaint. Otherwise, the resort is nice enough for an adults only stay. Although the place is adults only, the rooms are mainly designed for couples in relationships as there is little privacy to speak of. The rooms are rather spacious and they also have a hot tub in them. We stayed in a swim up room and Carlos (butler) was very attentive to bring us our drinks upon request as we spent a lot of time there. I cannot overstate how much the staff made up for the shortcomings of the hotel.


Never Again

The resort and grounds were clean and well taken care of. There were massive amounts of seaweed in the water on the beach. You had to swim out to try to get past the seaweed. Plenty of chair hogs. People come out late at night and early in the morning to put towels on chairs to claim them. Me and my party of five others found the staff to be unfriendly. We did not feel welcomed. Service was very slow if at all. One evening we had to get up and leave the restaurant because after waiting 45 mins our food never came out. Not even our appetizer. When we complained it was as if we were bothering them. Another evening we had to get up and leave in the Brazilian restaurant. We were able to serve ourselves at the buffet but the meat servers stayed clear from our table. Each day was a new problem. Power went out one night so we couldn’t watch TV. Our Butler was amazing. Wish the rest of the staff was as hospitable as he was. Ask for a wash cloth and told I don’t have any. Wrong answer. How bout I will find you one. Don’t expect to be put with your party, even after requesting beforehand. And don’t expect early check in. You will be checking in at 4:00. The weird thing is, when I got back home a co worker of mine saw my tan and asked where did I go for vacation. I told him D.R. He told me he was from D.R. and asked me how did I like it. I didn’t want to insult him so I just said it was relaxing. He told me you can be honest don’t say nice things just because I’m from there. He said the reason he was asking is because a lot of people he knows who vacationed there all told him the same thing. The people were very rude and uninviting and didn’t want to help you unless you flashed a tip in front of them. This is exactly the treatment we got. He said everyone tells him To go to Mexico instead because they’re much friendlier there. You will be treated better. I totally agree with that statement. I’ve been to Mexico numerous times and the people there were genuinely friendly and helpful. I will not be visiting this resort ever again and I can’t see myself visiting D.R. again. Not Luxury

Having stayed at Akumal, Mexico twice and enjoyed the facilities and service there, we opted to try Ambar. For us it was a disappointing experience. Male reception staff were not welcoming and overall quite miserable. In the whole 2 weeks, but for our last day, we were unable to secure sunbeds with shade. People were getting up at silly o'clock to reserve beds and those beds would remain unused for hours on end. The management do nothing to prevent this. In 30° plus shade is essential. Ordering room service is hit and miss as three times they answered the phone and put it straight down again. Husband had to march down to reception area for one of the staff there to call and got answered straight away. Drinks service in buffet very hit and miss. You may get coffee and juice within minutes of being seated but often have to chase after 5 minutes or more. Pool music much too loud and entertainment suited to 18-30 year old. No decent evening entertainment. Unable to eat at other buffets in the GP hotels nor obtain towels at their pools. Good points: Housekeeping 1st class. Grounds workers excellent. Coffee shop amazing. Luggage porters helpful and cheerful. Bar staff in beach bar great waiting staff in The Greek very attentive. Overall a low score as we wouldn't want to return.
