Unkempt but Cheap
We stumbled across this place by happenstance; we were tired and looking for a place to stay, and this is right on the D-612 as one drives through the town. The room looked acceptable, and it was cheap. The halls and lobby are what my GF described as "shabby-chic," and what I described as, well, this is a family-friendly review site. It's cluttered and musty. The room was large, but there were cobwebs and hanging spiders above the bathtub. Bed was lumpy. The sad thing is that this place has a lot of potential, if it was cleaned up, organized and remodeled to an elegant last-century appearance. The pieces are there, they just need to be assembled. Our experience with the restaurant was different than most others. We sat next to a roaring fire in the fireplace, which was nice, and the food was acceptable. My salad was terrible, but the main course was O-K. We could not complain about the main course; my partner actually loved hers. Wine was good. We were the only ones in the place both for dinner and breakfast, which as others have said, is suggestive of something. As others have also said, the proprietor is a dour looking, shabbily dressed and unshaven man of middle age, but we found him pleasantly gruff, if that makes sense. Gruffly pleasant? Anyway, he helped us with the heating system in the room and didn't seem to mind questions. His "helper" was very pleasant and served us dinner. I would recommend looking elsewhere for accommodations or meals, but if you do end up here, it won't be disastrous...probably.
The worst meal we've ever paid for!
We landed up in the garden of this strange hotel for dinner as there were no other local options at that time of the evening. We were met at the door by someone we presumed to be a guest, but turned out to be the hotel manager/owner? We were the only people eating and even around (which rang alarm bells but by that time, we'd been seated and given menus, so thought it rude to leave). It can't be so bad, we thought...well it was! We chose one of the set menus as we sat at our plastic, cloth covered table (non-ironed and very odd and shabby looking set up all round). My starter could only be described as cold dog food with a limp salad, and the mains continued to disappoint! Our forks were rendered useless around vegetables that had been nuked (and probably reheated over several days) and which were either overly chewy or turned into a pile of mush as they were touched. The salmon was also overly cooked and tasted of lamb (which my other half had ordered). Wine glasses tasted of old fat and the wine left a lot to be desired. We then waited over 20 mins to ask for the bill as the gentlemen was nowhere to be found - even though he'd been mooching about during the main course, plumping cushions and generally making himself busy whilst we were trying to eat. Finally the bill arrived and he then disappeared again. We left the money and made a dash for it, never to see the chap again. Although we were the only people there, it was as though he was surprised that anyone would want to eat a meal in his establishment, let alone stay there. I'm sure the chap who runs it means well, but he has nothing in the way of social graces or attention to detail, let alone the idea of serving edible food to his guests. Most frustrating when there are so many amazing places to eat in this wonderful country - please go somewhere else!!!!
Wish I'd read the reviews first
My family and I tried the restaurant. What a mistake - and not one we'd choose to repeat. Without going into too much detail, we were surprised when the Jambon and Melon starter arrived - a FULL melon each.... somewhat overfacing. Unfortunately the main course - whilst a more realistically sized portion - was accompanied by overcooked and barely warm veg, and the steaks were not cooked as requested by my children, even after they had been returned to the kitchen. The service was ok, the hotel appeared - as another reviewer mentioned - to be a step back in time. Pity it didn't stay there. We didn't eat our main courses or stay for dessert. Realmont is delightful. This restaurant is not.
Fantastic step back in time
Had a great meal here met some loverly guests that were staying the night. Food was brilliant. Very nice gentleman looking after us. Loads to look at and talk about. Massive open fire which was perfect for a cold winters evening. Highly recommended if you are passing and fancy something different.
Wow what a fantastic night we spent here!!!!
Guy, who is the proprietor, is a wonderful man. The building is 400 years old and was owned by Louis 14th who gave it to one of his mistresses. As soon as you enter, you walk into a bygone age, steeped in history and antiquities. At every turn you encounter artefacts that amaze and excite the senses. Guy has owned it for 8 years and it is still a work in progress - however very much worth a stay. After dinner, we spent around 2 hours talking with Guy - what an interesting man. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Silver service yet with a very understated calm which blended sublimely with the age of the building. We absolutely loved it. It is an experience you won't forget. Thank you Guy
