Christmas Buffet

Reviewed 22 november, 2021

Excellent Icelandic christmas buffet. I had four courses, but you could have as much as you wanted. I particularly loved the sushi, but also experienced typical Icelandic christmas specialties, such as leaf bread and glazed potatoes.

Stayed here for four nights with family including two teenagers. Reception staff are excellent really helpful very knowledgeable and English better than mine I think. The restaurant was spacious clean and Covid secure. Only had breakfast here but that was well stocked with all the usual you would expect. There was a nice bar area with plenty of seating. There are four lifts requiring a key card to go upstairs. Our room was clean without a quiet space. There is no drawer space however but there is plenty of wardrobe space and hangers. The safe was easy to use. There was also a fridge, a hairdryer and iron and ironing board. There was a kettle in the room with some tea coffee and creamer. We had a bath with an overhead shower that was easy to use and maintained good temperature. There was some toiletries in the bathroom including the shower cap shampoo and conditioner and shower gel. I personally found the bed incredibly comfortable. It was quite hard but that’s what I like. There were two pillows on each side. We were on the seventh floor facing the city not the best view but you could see the mountains in the distance. The rooms were very warm but our window opened enough to let in fresh air. My reason for not giving five stars due to the location. It’s about a 20 to 30 minute walk into town depending on how quick you walk. A taxi cost £17. It’s a nice walk when it’s dry not so nice when it’s heavy rain. All in all I would recommend this hotel.

Tired Hilton hotel. Great staff. Needs investment.

This is a very tired Hilton. I’ve stayed in plenty but this experience was underwhelming. The reception staff were excellent but from that point onward, it went downhill. The room was drab with old furnishings. The bathroom was tiny. The bedsheets were quite surprisingly nylon-based. I needn’t have worried about seeing the northern lights in Iceland, all I needed to do was run my hands on the bedding and there were static sparks everywhere. The worst element was the very stale and obviously very old pillows. Whilst the pillow covers were undoubted clean, I dread to think how old the underlying pillow was. It smelled so bad I needed to lay a towel over my pillow to mask the stale smell. Had I not been terribly tired and only staying for one night and up at 05:00, I’d have asked for them to be changed. The furniture in the bar was dirty and tired and the staff, once encouraged were attentive. In short, it’s an old hotel in need of investment being supported by a great front of house team. If you’re staying there, be in your toes, check your pillows or hold your nose.

Bad customer care and organisation

I received an email 9 days before arrival that I would not be able to stay at this hotel due to "unforeseen circumstances". On calling Hilton we were told there was a corporate buy out which is why we couldn't stay. We asked if we went to the hotel if there would be other guests and were told there wouldn't be any staff there. We then got in contact with the hotel directly via phone. My husband spoke to a member of staff who informed us to respond to the email directly as they don't deal with that area. When my husband asked can you tell us the reason why this has happened, we were hung up on. Just to clarify he wasn't being rude or aggressive in anyway and was just asking the question. We then responded to the email and were told that due to covid related reasons they have a large group occupying the hotel during our stay and were told there was an error in the phone system which is why we were hung up on. I then read in the review below about a gaming convention at the hotel and guests being moved. I understand errors can be made but I just feel this is a total mess and would just have appreciated a straight answer on what is going on. Being told different reasons from Hilton staff is poor. Holidays are extra special following the past couple of years and it sounds like many people have been let down here and at very short notice. When asked if there was even any compensation for this we were told to contact the hotel directly. Surely good customer service would be to arrange this rather than we have to chase this up as none of this was our doing. I have had this booked for months on end and as diamond member have been very loyal to Hilton and purposely worked up to Diamond for this stay so we can enjoy the executive lounge. As such we will now have to pay out more for food and drinks as we wont be able to enjoy this. It is my birthday, our 10 year anniversary and we also became engaged in Iceland 5 years ago and stayed at this hotel- so were very much looking forward to it. In the view of trying to have some objectivity my memories of the hotel at that time were it was very enjoyable with no complaint. I will taking this further and just not what I expect from a corporation such as Hilton.

Bad Management and customer care.

When I arrived the morning of October wanted to check in I was informed that they were moving me to another hotel due to health reasons. I was told they tried to contact me but I have no voicemails nor emails from the Hilton staff regarding this. Although I heard they were moving several peoples reservations to other hotels due to a gaming convention and they wanted to make room for those guests. Was told my room would be upgraded once I arrived at the other hotel, it wasn’t. They moved me to To a hotel where the noise makes it impossible to sleep and and I am here until October 8, not happy with Hilton.
