Rio Aplauso Hostel

We stayed in a room the same size as most double rooms we have stayed in during our trip, however rather than just the one bed they managed to squeeze 12 in there using triple bunks. It was so cramped people had to sleep with their backpacks on their beds and the room was so stuffy and dirty all apart from one in the room was bed ridden during the final of the World Cup as we all got ill there. It is very overpriced and I would not recommend it but on a lighter note the staff are very helpful and the breakfast was good.

While I am fully of the belief that you get what you pay for, I still think places such as this should make some effort. We had two nights here and luckily had a private four person room for two of us. Thankfully we did, as there was barely enough room for just the two of us!, The night we arrived the hostel must have been pretty much fully booked. It was incredibly noisy all night and people in some of the other rooms obviously had as little space as us and had to pack and sort their stuff out in the corridor. Thankfully it was quieter the second night. The mattresses and pillows were covered in plastic sheets which then had further sheets on top. Being in Brazil lying on plastic sheeting...well it didn't make for comfortable nights sleep! The shared bathroom facilities were quite frankly a disgrace. If you have shared bathrooms you have to make sure that they are regularly cleaned throughout the day. These definitely weren't! Its a shame really, with a little bit of TLC and attention this could be a really good hostel. It wouldn't take much effort to improve things considerably, and it could make a massive different. As it was we were glad to get away after a couple of days.

This hostel was not a good experience for my friend and I. We arrived for the World Cup and were asked to pay 200 reals immediately, and were barked at in Portuguese. We then went upstairs to our room which contained 6 beds, and nothing else! It was so cramped that you could not do anything apart from use it to sleep. The bedding smelt pretty disgusting and had to be changed, and the beds were uncomfortable. It was so crammed that you'd have people clambering on your bed to get to the top bunk in the early hours. Not to mention the guy at reception wouldn't give my friend directions to Christ the Redeemer, and instead demanded that we went with him on a hostel tour at 4pm. (we went on our own, it was great) We ended up checking out a day early and booking a hotel closer to the beach. DON'T STAY HERE. It was the worst hotel/hostel experience of my life. We stayed in one in Sao Paulo prior which was much, much better.

be aware that this hostel does NOT have private rooms with its own bathroom, we booked and paid in advanced for a private room,we reached there after 24 hours of traveling and the guy at the reception showed a room with six other beds, we complained and after 2 hours of back an forth discussion we went to another hostel.

It was my first experience of sharing a room with other people I was not familiar with. Sincerely, when it comes from a budget hotel, we cannot expect too much in terms of great comfort or something similar. However, I truly appreciate the staff´s kindness in helping the guests by providing tips on how go to and fro safely through the city. Notwithstanding, there is a slight lack of cleaning maintenance in the restroom (it should be kept continuosly) and most of the electric outlet were out of service. I would be back there definitively - as long as these imperfections are mended.
