My journey in the hotel: start with meeting the two hosters that are lovely and will care of you during your stay. The environment is a a small paradise, the area is splendid, the point of view marvellous, with a direct contact with nature and the food is good. It could be one of the most beautiful hotel in the world, with a small refurbishment and a review of the isolation of the chalet....but if you love nature, you will be amazed ! It is like the paradise discovered by Pumba with the advantage (and one or two inconvenient)
Treated like royalty in this chic country estate
Thanks Christina for a wonderful stay.. this is lovely country estate ..a fine retreat into nature.. there was even a jacuzzi..the views over the clouds are stunning.. the staff charming especially Christina who was so delightful ..our chalet was spacious and clean with satellite tv ( if you need it ).. the main house and restaurant was quite magical.. the owners have an eye for design ..the food was delicious especially breakfast which was ' overflowing with breads.cheeses, cereal.ham etc.. we enjoy birdwatching which drew us to itataia and saw plenty of birds in the grounds ..Christina was able to organise trips into the park .. so glad we stayed here ( did visit Hotel de ypo -other birders go there ) as we had such a personalised and intimate experience .. Sorry other reviewers seem to have gone to the wrong place !!
Lovely stay in an amazing forest setting (great for birders)
We stayed for 2 mid-week nights in Sept 2016. The hotel is located really close to the entrance of the national park and in a really forested setting. It was pretty quiet when we were staying, as I think that they are a weekend place. The food was nice and the staff were really friendly. They have very limited English, which was matched by our total lack of Portuguese, but we managed to get by and even communicate to get our laundry done. The room was spacious and the bed huge. The bathroom was clean and well kept. Other reviews have said it is run down - some of the rooms seem out of action/being done up, but this wasn't the case for our room or the any of the public areas, which were all really nice. If you are on a birding holiday, then this is THE place to stay. We also stayed in the NP at Donati, but the birding was much better here. There is a trail a few hundred meters from the hotel and it was the best birding we had on our trip to the area - so many antwrens and antbirds that we never got more than a few hundred metres down the path in a morning. Our species list for the hotel grounds and trail was about 100 in two short mornings - saffron toucanet was my highlight. Capuchin monkeys were about too (on the roof of reception!). Magpie tanagers at the feeder at breakfast was also nice.
Only the view is worthwhile
The hotel is located in a wonderful place with a wonderful view, but unfortunately this is its only advantage. Like other reviewers said, this is a run-down property and may have been nice 20 years ago. It seems there's no maintenance. The sauna doesn't work, the swimming pool is dirty, the room door doesn't open right, the mattress is old and everything is falling apart. It's humid and there's a musty odor in the room. The fireplace chimney wasn't clean and the smoke came back into the room, leaving a smoke smell in our clothes. The 2.5 km dirt road to the hotel is horrible, it seems that the owners don't want their guests to arrive at the hotel. The restaurant is ok, but the food is poor and expensive. The hotel's rate is overpriced for what they offer. I'll never stay in that hotel again.
Beautiful Location but Run-Down Property
We stayed for one night. Vista Linda is one of not too many properties which are actually in Itatiaia Park which was why I chose it. Lots of birds and some monkeys were right on the grounds. The forest setting and views are fabulous! Unfortunately, no local hiking trails from the hotel grounds. Overall, the place may have been nice 20 years ago, but has not been maintained so everything is falling apart. The swimming pool, jacuzzi, etc were dirty and not usable, although we would not have used them anyhow. The rooms were clean but a strong musty odor gave us breathing problems. Bathroom was clean and shower hot. Breakfast was good (fresh breads, cakes, quiche, etc) and the view from the restaurant is panoramic. Insects were not a problem aside from a few ant mounds. We can confirm the road is not well maintained - very rough. However, it is only about 2.5 km to the hotel and any car can make it just fine. The hotel workers drive up and down in tiny little cars. Service was indifferent. We sat in the restaurant for about an hour one night but couldn't scare up a drink or menu so we drove to Penedo for a fabulous italian dinner. Overall, if you are going to try a few pousadas in the park for different bird-watching, this one may be worth it just for the location. They do take internet bookings on booking.com which is nice. R350/night for a small room is over-priced a bit.
