La Gavina
Perfect Hotel. Faultless. This is how Hotels should be. Family run, beautifully furnished with every conceivable service available and the most beautiful terrace dining room in Europe. Plus a simply spectacular swimming pool.
Highly overpriced - living off the past.
I would never have guessed this was a “Leading Hotel of the World”! True it had great views but the rooms are old, tired and have minimal/basic facilities (a generous term would be “classic”). The service is 3* standard, certainly nowhere near 5* and certainly not worth the price! At best it is reactive; the breakfast service is quite comical it is so slow and incompetent and the room service is not much better - the staff just don’t seem to know what they are supposed to do! I am sure this was a great place 50 years ago but it really hasn’t moved on and the service must surely have been incomparably better then. I really just don’t see how they get away with these prices unless people are just wowed by the stars who came here 50 years ago (I am sure they wouldn’t go near it now). Very disappointing! We certainly won’t be back!
A *****Resort With A History
La Gavina Hotel in S'Agaro was started in 1932 as the anchor of a large vacation villas development in one of the best spots of the Costa Brava. As soon as you step into the resort, you are taken in by the wonderful park, the great Spanish house with ample space and elegantly furnished. The staff is friendly and helpful as one would expect in such a place. There are: a large salt water pool, a Spa with indoor pool, a gym, tennis courts, covered parking, and an extended scenic waterfront walk around the peninsula where the hotel stands from S'Agaro to Playa d'Aro. The place has a history and many celebrities have spent a vacation in La Gavina. There are several restaurants inside or on terraces. The Taverna del Mar on the beach offers wonderful fish and sea food. "La Candela" offers a very high class menu where 8 cooks will accept only 16 guests, that we enjoyed a lot. The area has excellent cycling opportunities. We noticed several groups who spent a cycling week in La Gavina, supported by a small bus and a maintenance car for the daily tours. Avoid July and August. Good value for US and Swiss budgets. Call the hotel and make reservations well in advance. A room with terrace and sea view is recommended.
Fabulous time at Hostal de la Gavina
We had a wonderful experience at Hostal de la Gavina. We had booked a Junior Suite but were upgraded to a Deluxe Suite upon arrival because we had just come from the Majestic Hotel in Barcelona (both hotels are members of the LHW group). The Deluxe Suite, located on the second floor, was spacious, with a terrace and partial views of the Mediterranean and harbor of Sant Pol. The room was nicely appointed - only minor con was that the mattress was rather firm for us. Air conditioning in the room was satisfactory, but the weather was not hot when we visited. The hotel grounds are meticulously groomed, and the pool overlooking the beach is absolutely beautiful. We took advantage of the pool and spa, and also went down to the S'Agaro beach club, which is a 4-5 minute walk from the hotel, to spend some time at the beach. At the beach club, we rented two sunbeds and an umbrella for 26 EUR/day. We also had lunch nextdoor at the Taverna del Mar, overlooking the beach. Down the beach there is a shop where you can purchase snorkels, swim toys, etc. Meals at the hotel were very enjoyable. Breakfast on the terrace each morning was a true highlight, but we also enjoyed dinner at the gastronomic Candlelight and the more casual Terrace. We also had dinner one night at Sa Marinada in Sant Feliu which was very nice. Overall, a delightful experience! We hope to return someday.
Extraordinary Experience
This is a beautiful hotel set in magnificent surroundings and it is immaculately restored and maintained. The service is amazing. There is an enormous pool with a lunchtime restaurant which has a gorgeous view of the bay. I had a wonderful massage from David the physiotherapist there. There is a very scenic walk around the coast from in front of the hotel. Veronica at reception was always incredibly helpful. The service was so incredible that they even sent me Christina the seamstress/ laundress when I had a problem with my dress and she fixed everything for me. We made day trips from here to picturesque towns around the Costa Brava, so it is best to have a car.
