After a bad experience a few miles away we booked a room last minute at The Buccleuch Arms. The staff in the main desk were extremely polite and helpful and that set the tone for the stay!
The room was big enough for two of us and two dogs.
Our room overlooked the main road outside which you get used to after half an hour in the room!
The evening meal was delicious and the breakfast was one of the tastiest I’ve tasted!
Thoroughly recommend this place situated near local walks and beautiful towns..
An OK visit

Stayed as it was opening up from Covid close.
The stay was OK overall but there were shortcomings.
It had a reduced menu for dinner which we were not aware off prior to arrival, Food was fair but nothing special. Plenty of it.
Bar was the only place in Scotland not able to provide a Scottish single malt whisky. There were four Irish and one Japanese malts. Only Scottish whisky was a Bells grain whisky. Plenty gins and draft ales.
Breakfast was good but service was all over the place, no menus, had to ask for juice, salt, pepper, jam, marmalade.
On the plus side the staff were good, service quick and the bedroom had a good shower and a comfy bed. No tea and coffee in the room due to Covid. Sign said bed only changed every four days.
Not in my opinion a four star establishment as advertised.
Enjoyed our stay

Really surprised to see some disappointing reviews of this hotel, as we have just stayed overnight and enjoyed our visit. Yes, the room was pretty small and if we had been staying for more than one night I would probably have requested a larger room, however it was more than adequate for one night and the bed was very comfortable. The garden is beautiful and we enjoyed our pre-dinner drink there. The food was delicious - I had the beef pattie and my husband had a steak, followed by desserts which were also lovely - and very good value for money. The wine that we selected was also terrific and again, good value for money. Can't fault the service either - the owner and the waiting staff, in the evening and at breakfast , were all very attentive. Would we stay here again? Absolutely.
Superb one night stay

Had a one night stay at the Buccleuch Arms while walking in the area. A warm welcome from Billy the owner ensured we had an enjoyable stay. Our room was lovely and clean, food was excellent, and we could not fault the service from the young waiting staff. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.
Major disapointment, below average food and poor service

This hotel is highly recommended in a bestselling Scottish guide, albeit the author does inform the reader that it is one of his locals !
I can only assume that the standards have dropped considerably recently .
Even allowing for Covid impact, my stay here on the 13th June was a huge disapointment .
The bedroom was dated . The small " dressing table " served little purpose ,as most of it was taken up by a TV , that wasn't in the flush of youth !
After closing the en-suite door , we couldn't open it again from the outside ,and had to call the Owner, who informed us that this happened a lot and it was a result of me having inadvertently activated the lock, which wasn't the case. He left a wooded cocktail stick to insert into the lock if the fault reoccurred !
The evening meal was also a huge disapointment.
My wife ordered soup, which arrived cold , accompanied by a rather large foccacia bread, which was inedible, cold and hard, as if it had just been liberated from a fridge. My starter of " smoked halloumi taco " was deep fried and greasy
There was little improvement in the main courses. My wife had an asparagus frittata, which was supposed to be served with a red onion, sun blushed tomato salad , which never appeared. My much vaulted beef dish, which the Owner had advised me , earlier in the day, to pre-book ,to guarantee availability was chewy, the gravy was gloopy and tasteless, the accompaning vegetables had definitely been cooked before and the yorkshire puds tasted like they were days old. A view echoed by a fellow diner ,who hailed from that part of England.
At no time during the meal did we get the chance to bring the above issues to the staff , as we were sat in a side room ,that the staff seemed to have forgotten. At no point in the meal , did staff appear to enquire if we needed anything , ie further drinks, mustard , horseradish , a courtesy extended to other diners in the main part of the bar/restaurant.
The young staff were clearly inexperienced and were not receiving any guidance or advice from the management.
To be fair , the breakfast the following day was very good and the staff pleasant and efficient, in contrast to the proceedings the night before.
All in all, the stay at the Buccleugh Arms was a major let down and not a venue I would stay at again, which is a pity, as we lhad looked forward to a stopover in the Borders en-route to a family holidai in the Lake District.
