More about the hotel
Simply awful!
Stay away from this place! Staff is unfriendly. As a welcome, we found ants in our 2nd floor room. Late at night, 2 drink guys in the room next-door to ours started arguing quite loudly. It woke us up of course, but we were hoping it wouldn't last. Chairs falling, arguing, and loud conversation. When we finally called the reception desk for someone to intervene, we did not hear anyone coming. It only stopped way after 2:30 am. Next morning, reception assures me that someone came and did not hear anything. This is simply impossible! Clearly, the guy never came but we paid for a room and couldn't sleep.
Not worth the money
Honestly you’d be better off staying at a motel 6 and save yourself some money. This place looked nice in the pictures but after getting to our room, there were cracks in the walls, the doors don’t fully shut, and over just looked like poor quality. The best parts of this place were the view and the kindness of the staff. This place is not worth the price.
Big room, big noise
I was given a great room: spacious, great water pressure, microwave, mini-fridge, coffee set up, nice view of the river across the small back parking lot! Altogether lovely. Until the trains came. Trains. Freight trains. Plural. The 1st night, trains went past at 9:30PM, 11:30PM, 11:45PM, 4:00AM, 7:45AM, & 9:00AM. Just after the 9:30 train, my next-room neighbors came home & I realized just how thin the walls are. At some point, I can only assume a train woke a neighbor in another nearby room, because I could hear THAT movement. The 2nd night, with the help of some adult beverages, I slept through the early part of the night, but I woke to trains at 1:45AM, 3:30AM, & 5:30AM. I got up, packed up, & left at 6:00AM. On the plus side, the hotel is in a nice location relative to the Old Town section of St. Augustine, and is very easy to find on US Highway 1. While it was a bit too cool to swim, the pool & hot tub area were well maintained & very inviting. The on-property bar/restaurant was a nice bonus, & the fact that they are pet-friendly is definitely a plus. (I did find it odd that the front-desk clerk specifically said he did not need to see my service dog credentials, but later, when I got home, I had an email from them asking me to provide it.) I thought very highly of them for providing 2 disposable masks & sanitizer wipes in the room. I also thought very highly of them for the overall appearance of the public areas. While there are obviously a good number of pluses for this property, & while they certainly have no control over the trains, my advice is, unless you are a heavy sleeper or impervious to super-loud noise, look at other properties with thicker walls & farther away from the tracks.

Bates Hotel?
Sorry, but this place had nice pictures online and decent reviews. Upon arrival, I began noticing how unkempt the property was and how bad the smell was outside, which I know that’s out of the hotel’s control, but not the inside. The front desk assistant was very friendly and helpful, that’s why I left 2 stars. We booked for one night but wanted to stay two, thank God it wasn’t for two. The rooms are very run down, warm AC, half the room was painted sorbet green and the other half a light pink. Beds were placed on wooden tables/boards. And the smell. What an awful smell both of our rooms had. So musty and moldy two of us almost threw up. Thank God Amex came through and booked us in a nearby hotel that definitely saved this trip. Honestly, the Ponce needs some TLC.
