Lisa Was Awesome

After having a horrible experience with another hotel to start our honeymoon in San Diego, my husband and I checked into the Downtown Westin and were greeted with kindness and professionalism by Lisa. She did an excellent job explaining all the amenities available to us and even mentioned some delicious restaurants near the hotel. She really turned our trip around for the better. I’d give her ten stars if I could! The hotel itself is clean, open concept and has excellent bathrooms. We loved it here!

The Westin San Diego Downtown, Lisa, Terese at the front desk and the entire staff have been fabulous!
We were here for our daughter's wedding aboard the USS MIDWAY on July 14th. From the beginning to the end 5 star service!!

Excellent Location if coming by Amtrak

Location, 5*s - Since we took the train, the Westin's location CANNOT be beat. It was a short 3-minute walk from the lobby to the train station's lobby. It was also within walking distance of Seaport Village (about 20-mins), Gaslamp Quarter (10 - 12 mins), Convention Center (about 15 mins).
Room, 3.75*s / 5*s - Stayed at Rm 805, King/Peekaboo bayview room with views of pool and city streets below. Based on the number and placement of windows, I am guessing that this is a corner room as well. For the most part, the quality of the room is at par with my expectations of a 4-star hotel; the room appears to be around 350 sq ft. The room itself is well-appointed; the coffee maker and complimentary (2) bottled water are back. Furniture are new-looking and dust-free. There is a mini-ref and a good-size safe that will easily hold two laptops and small electronics. Bed is very comfortable and clean, and the reading lights on the headboard came in very handy. And plenty of electric outlets.
MGMT - TAKE NOTE: CLEAN THE EXTERIOR OF THE ROOM'S WINDOWS!!! Windows are thickly streaked with dust-encrusted watermarks. The amount of watermark streaks indicates that the window has not been power-washed for a very long time, as in over 24 months!!
Bathroom, 3.75*s / 5*s - I like that the vanity area is separated by a pocket door from the tub/shower/toilet. The shape of the trial-sized toiletries is ergonomic which means that they did not easily slip from soapy hands. I liked that there is a bathtub mat and that the showerhead was upgraded to rainshower and wand combo. The number of towels, hand towels, and wash cloths were sufficient for 2 people for a 1-night stay, and the towelry has the softness that I expect at a 4-star hotel. But for a 4-star hotel with 4-star room rate, I expected a shower gel, in addition to the soap bar provided. I also expected a shower cap to already have been provided. MGMT - TAKE NOTE: UNCLOG THE SINK!! The water quickly backed up into the sink basin, and then the water drained very slowly!!!!
Front desk service, 2.5*s / 5*s - at check-in, the hotel manager was there at the front desk too, in addition to two front desk staff, and she was very helpful and knowledgeable about the views from the different bayview rooms. Since we arrived at 10am, I paid an extra $75 to secure a room immediately and I selected the room recommended. But prior to the manager assisting us, was one of the front-desk staff who exuded the too-hot-to-be bothered attitude towards us!!!. Talk about not having any front-desk, soft-skill customer service...one got the feeling that she was talking to a trainee employee i/o a paying guest. It was a great thing that the hotel manager jumped in very early in the check-in process, which made it a very nice experience. The same problematic clerk was there the next morning, still looking glum, probably wishing she were somewhere else. Luckily, our only expense was for the room itself, so checkout was mercifully short. MGMT - TAKE NOTE: THIS IS A TRAINING OPPTY FOR YOUR CHECK-IN DESK STAFF. IT IS ABSOLUTELY INEXCUSABLE TO TREAT YOUR GUESTS WITH DISRESPECT!!!! When addressing your guests, you MUST maintain eye contact and engage with the customer, instead of talking while doing something else!!!!! The 2.5*s are credit for the first front-desk clerk and the hotel manager's efforts assisting us at checkin.
Pool and Jacuzzi, 2.5*s / 5*s -- I like that there were plenty of towels and seats for everyone. The pool area was essentially well-kept, except for the plastic glass rolling about on the ground that the pool attendants assiduously ignored. The pool was cleaned early the next morning, as I witnessed from our room. MGMT - TAKE NOTE: YOU ARE NEGLIGENT IN ALLOWING THE JACUZZI TO BE NON-OPERATIONAL ON THE 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND!!! You need to do whatever it took to have all of your shared amenities 100% operational on any given day, much more on a holiday weekend when you expect more guests!!!
Bar, 2.5*s / 5*s - The bar area was nicely sized with plenty of tables and seating. MGMT - TAKE NOTE: CHECK YOUR STAFFING LEVEL ESPECIALLY ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND!!! On July 4, we checked out the bar at around 6pm. What did we find but all the tables (no exaggeration) topped with dishes and utensils from the previous diners. The line to get item(s) from the bar was much too long!! We saw about 20 people in line...seriously?! And then after we returned from the fireworks, we checked out the bar again in the hopes of getting after-dinner drinks. Nothing doing!! The "bartender" looked like she was more suited to doing housekeeping than bartending!! I have never seen a bartender move slower!! No wonder the line was again....still unbearably long. I am sure that I was not the only guest who observed these; MGMT, this was a missed opportunity for you to have made extra revenue from your guests.
PUBLIC INDOOR AREAS, 4*s / 5*s - Well-lit, nicely spaced, beautiful marble floors; the lobby exuded an airy feel that I found very welcoming. I like the comfortable sofas and easy chairs spread about in the lobby areas. The hallways in the 8th floor were well-vacuumed and did not have any musty or other strange smells in the air. But it appears that Housekeeping failed to take a closer look at the elevator area. There was a plastic fork (albeit, clean) on the floor that was there when we arrived, and was still there when we checked out. Poor Westin.
For all the fall-downs I described above, I cannot recommend this Westin hotel, nor will I use this Westin hotel again...regardless of whether I use Amtrak to travel to SD.
Thank You, Lisa!!

Recently stayed here for a friend’s bachelorette weekend. We were helped by Lisa at the front desk.. she went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of and that the bride had an enjoyable weekend. We are so grateful! The rooms are clean, the views are gorgeous, and staff is friendly.
