Room needed TLC and bad breakfast

Reviewed 23 january, 2022

The front desk and the car park people were great. Location is great right on central Avenue next to museums and shopping……why two stars then? Because I travel a lot and I am unforgiving on certain things. When you have a bathroom sink that doesn’t drain properly and backs up that just shows that housekeeping didn’t do their job or check the room thoroughly it’s such an easy thing to check. Not only that but the headboard of the bed was loose and kept rattling. That’s also an easy thing to notice and check and fix before your guest gets there. The main reason though; I like to get my breakfast at the hotel rather than go out and de-evolve into a Hunter gatherer so I always book hotels with breakfasts. I have traveled to 50 countries and stayed in more hotels than I can count up to. This hotel either partners with or owns the connected restaurant called el Patio. THIS WAS THE WORST BREAKFASTS IVE EVER HAD STAYING AT A HOTEL. It is Costa Rica and they couldn’t even get the coffee right. I’ve had better Folgers instant coffee. I got one piece of stale, barely toasted white toast without butter and a two-egg lukewarm omelette with maybe two pieces of ham in it that was served almost cold. I thought maybe they were having a bad day that day so I was going back the next morning only to here two English people at a table talking about how bad the breakfast was so I walked out and went to a cafe nearby. It truly was terrible. Plus the service was unfriendly acted like I was imposing coming to get the included breakfast.

Ok for a 3 star hotel

Reviewed 17 january, 2022

We stayed two nights at this hotel and it's ok for a three star. Our room on the third floor was clean with two massive beds and good hot shower and toilet. I mention this because shower pressure and toilet flushes are a liiiittle on the weak side in Costa Rica. We had wifi on the third floor as opposed to our friends on the second. The breakfast is pretty good and, different from stated on the menu, you do get both a hot drink AND o juice. The hotel restaurant had a decent crooner type live act on the Fri, good if you want some music with your dinner. The area feels quite different in the day to in the eve and the hotel could do with putting a sign up to just where the entrance is. We walked around the block a couple of times to find it and then somebody driving in let us and another couple in. San Jose is interesting to walk around, grubby areas giving way to prettier ones but always interesting. We didn't have much time but like to recommend the Museum of Modern Art, Otoya Cafe (also a hotel) and Cafe Rojo for stops. As with everywhere: Walk around, take it all in, make the best of it. We loved everywhere in Costa Rica. Well, maybe not San Marcos, that WAS a dump.

ok for a night

Reviewed 9 december, 2021

I am not a fan of this place, but if you want to spend a night in San Jose, its fine. the hotel in the main pedestrian area of San Jose, but it is completley gated so very hard to find the entrance. Luckily a friendly street cleaner pointed me to the gate of the carpark to the side of the hotel where the entrance is. If the hotel is reading this might be worth putting up a sigh saying Entrance! The room was fine, very small window so I did feel a bit closed in. I also booked airport transfer and that was seamless.

Hard to find and Scary Area!

Reviewed 16 october, 2021

Trying to find this hotel was a nightmare! The sign is invisible. In the add they say free parking. I was expecting a garage like most hotels. After the fourth time around the block my husband sees the locked gate and sign. The street was dark and scary! The area not great from what I could see. Stayed there since all reviews said good area. NOT! The room was ok but I would not recommend to anyone.

Once a flagship hotel, now a poor and old place with unreliable service. Breakfast is an insult !!!

Reviewed 11 october, 2021

Ok so this place used to be a flagship hotel in the city centre of San Jose, but it is nothing like it now. It is old. and the shops and restuarants that they advertise in their lobby are closed. The breakfast they offer as inclusive in the room price is an insult and the waiters are a lucky lottery. Some are great, others are useless. But the breakfast is a joke - you get a small cup of coffee with old milk, of which half ends up in the coffee saucer or on the table. The eggs, if you order any, come fried to death on a plate without anything on it - no salad, no bread, no sauce. Just two sad eggs friend to death on a plate. Wow I mean, I get it, it is COVID pandemic and we all must look after our money - but please do not overdo it. If you advertise it as a room with breakfast, then give a breakfast. Aparently, the breakfast includes only one drink - half a cup of coffee or an orange juice, not both. Considering that both are poor quality, why not be providing both? Won't cost you much more than you provide now. Really sad. A/C in rooms is not working properly, as the rooms are hot and humid and have no fresh air at all. It is a strange hotel with a strange odd vibe ! On a good note - the staff at the reception and concierge are great, and stick to the good old values of true excellence in hospitality.
