Very well located average hotel
We can't understand the poor reviews. For the money it's pretty average across the board. Not great, we give you that, but its location is perfect, in the middle of town, and totally acceptable for the price. We stayed a number of nights and many places we visited were so easy from The Espana Hotel.
The worst hotel in town
DON'T GOOOOOOO Please. Old, with no maintenance at all, dirty, horrible. This was tje most negative experience in the last twenty years. The place is a ruin. The elevator was as old as the building and with no maintenance at all as the hotel. Don't foolish yourself. DON'T GOOOOOOO.
Amazing Location; Hotel not so Amazing
You could not possibly ask for a better location. This hotel is in the center of everything. The price was reasonable for a short stay, but you would not want to stay here for more than a few nights at most. Although I loved the rustic and classic decor... the hotel is in need of DESPERATE renovation. The bed was missing one of the legs and was literally sitting on the floor. There was only one electrical socket because someone in their infinite wisdom decided to attach the decorative headboards over the outlets to where you can see that they exist, but you cannot plug anything into them. The best part about the room was the AC, which had a remote. The worst part was the window would not close all the way, so I was forced to hear listen to the constant dripping of AC drainage on the tin roof below the room. Last, the lights in the common areas are all broken, which makes the place look even more run down. This hotel has amazing potential especially when it is in an amazing location. Plenty of OK Markets, restaurants, and shopping within one block of the place. Just minutes from the Cathedral and Plaza de Armas.
Don't do it to yourself!
I saw mixed reviews of this hotel on another site and put the negatives down to the hard to please. I was so wrong. The bed sheets didn't appear to have been washed recently, if ever, the shower had no hot water. The floor hadn't been cleaned recently as you could tell by the colour of the soles of your bare feet. The only hotel I've ever walked out of locating something nicer near by. It's not worth it, don't do it to yourself!
I wish I listened to the reviews
I don't know how this establishment can call itself a 3-star hotel. It probably qualifies for a 2-star hotel at best. I was fooled by the photographs. The building is actually quite cramped and decrepit. Upon arriving the receptionist tried to charge me USD$25 to check-in early despite telling me the room was vacant the night before so it didn't need to be cleaned. When I decided to go elsewhere he suddenly insisted that the $25 cash didn't matter and he removed this fee which he originally said could not be waived. He suggested that I leave a 'good' review. The wifi signal wasn't reaching my room on level 4 so I had to stand in the hallway my whole stay just to get a reliable connection. You often have to hold the cage door in the lift closed or it will stop between levels. The room was dark, mouldy and very poorly furnished. The bed sheets didn't fit on the double bed and the elastic would constantly fall off revealing long stray hairs on the mattress from previous guests. The only window faced into a concrete wall and someone else's room. Luckily there was air conditioning to help blow out the stale air. On two occasions during the day I couldn't have a shower because there was only cold water. Lukewarm at best. Other days hot water was okay. We also chose this place because it featured a bath tub but with no plugs to enjoy a bath. The overall feel of this place is depressing. Very disappointed and even though the location was excellent, next time I will spend less and have a better experience at a hostel. In the end the experience was so off-putting that we decided to check out 3 days early and go to a hotel with working wifi and amenities.
