Surly staff creates missed opportunity
Reviewed 22 September, 2019
We've stayed at many chateaux across Europe. This property nicely maintained and the dinner was good. Unfortunately, the staff - from the front desk to the food servers - were unfriendly on several occasions. Initially, it thought they simply didn't like non-French speaking guests (we got rolling eyes in response to a question in English, a cold shoulder and no smiles from food servers). The service was so laughingly bad that we watched the way other guests were treated at dinner, and noticed that guests who spoke French were generally treated the same. Regrettable. If that doesn't bother you, then this may work for you because the room was nice (it had a sitting room and large windows), the property looks nice from the exterior, the grounds are nice and the food was good.
Very laid back atmosphere away from the crowds in Étretat

Beautiful rooms with agréable beds and impeccable bathrooms.
The outside needs some painting but that does not have any effect on the comfort inside. Very healthy and fresh breakfast and and honest cuisine for dinner.
Classical chateau with historical connections

We have now stayed there 4 times, same room each time, always delighted to be there again. The demi-pension deal is very good, 45 Euro pp for dinner and breakfast, and the quality is excellent. The grounds are good for a pleasant stroll. The chateau found fame in the summer of 1875 when the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, who had been advised by her physicians that sea air would be good for her constitution, rented it for the summer. There are many photographs and souvenirs of her stay everywhere in the chateau.
A place to remember - with a few things to improve

Very beautiful place: nice building, nice gardens and charming rooms. In fact, we stayed in this same hotel 7 years ago and we came back because we remembered the atmosphere. We stayed in the room called "Sissi" which is the central one, in the first floor, over the main entrance. Good space but quite uncomfortable bed, which is a real pity.
Dinner is good, without being exceptional (again a missed opportunity), and service is good but with long waiting times. Breakfast is correct; it could be clearly improved in terms of variety and quality even if that could mean an extra increase in price, but the place deserves it.
Overall, the place is memorable, although probably overpriced for what it currently offers.
Charming Normandy Chateau Stay

My family and I visited Chateau de Sissi again after almost 20 years. We were happy to find it as charming and authentic as we remembered - nicely renovated and reasonably well maintained, with an excellent dinner in a charming setting. You won’t find the typical big hotel or resort amenities, however a very pittoresque and local experience!
