Stay away ! Horrible experiance.
I wish I read these reviews before booking my stay. I figured this would be a good hotel since it was new but I was so wrong. First, the person that checked us in was not friendly whatsoever. He had a earpiece in and was probably listening to music, since I had to repeat myself multiple times. He was not in any sort of uniform and was yawning and saying how tired he was... ( Seriously??) Lobby reaked of marijuana smell. Room was okay , but definitely a strange set up... No door to the bathroom? Why? If you're sitting on the bed and look over to the large full size mirror you can see the shower... and whoever is in there. This gave me the creeps... Also there are minimal amenities in the room. They have a 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner dispenser that was awful and no coffee? Really disapointing. The thing that made the stay so disapointing was the fact that they put a group of people in the connecting room next to ours. We came in pretty late so we were aware that the hotel was nowhere near sold out. The group next door played loud music until 2 am and when I called to seek assistance , the Front Desk guy told me that they cannot get in contact with them and that I SHOULD MOVE ROOMS! They wanted me to move rooms at 1 am, instead getting the other individuals to quiet down. Finally, the most shaddy part was that I recieved a notification in the morning that my card was once again authorized for the room. Why? It had been a few days now since my stay and I have yet to recieve a reciept for my stay. I tried to reach out to Marriott and never received a response. Now I have to go through my bank to file a dispute... This might have been tmi! but seriously such a horrible experience! I just wanted to get some rest after a long day of driving. Their entire staff needs to be retrained ... Save yourself a headache ... STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Commendation to Seth Huskz
Recently, my family and I, 14 in total, in route to our vacation destination, decided to reduce contiguous travel hours by making a stop in Savannah, at the Aloft Savannah Downton. We each settled in our respective assigned accommodations and went out to the Historic District. Upon return, we felt a bit of disappointment at the lack of culinary services at the facility. As we went to retire for the day, my husband and I, the eldest in the family, realized two rather large windows right in front of our bed that seemed to have electric shades, would not and did not function even after calling the front desk for help. A gentleman tried twice to fix them but couldn't. We ended having to cover them as we could, after we were told the person that could have fixed them had left, they were not able to have him come back, and he was not returning until the next day! Where does Seth Huskz fit into all this, you might ask? He went out of his way to show us what was available, his communication of the fact that the facility had just recently opened, his kind words of apologies, not attempting to just find justification, were the highest possible! Because of Seth's words and attention, we did not leave a Marriott Bonvoy location completely dissatisfied! Kindly thank him and recognize that through his ability to deal with unforeseen situations we have taken the time to ask that he be recognized! Sincerely Jorge & Clara Perez-Dorrego
Sadly, Worse Than The First Visit
Just returned from my 2nd stay at the Aloft Savannah, and had hoped for an improvement from my 1st stay in September. I had given 4 stars in large part to the cleanliness and overall friendliness of the staff, cutting some slack given they had opened in August, and figured they'd work the kinks out. Unfortunately it's gotten worse. -Parking is still odd. You now call the front desk, who will buzz you in. We didn't have any issues, as we didn't have to wait after calling, but still odd that you can't swipe your room key to enter the parking garage. -Yes, you can valet or park your own car on the floor your room is on, but as noted there are a small flight of stairs to get to the floor, which may be difficult for some with luggage. -The check-in staff were friendly, I didn't experience the issues others have noted. -Unlike last time when our sons accompanied us, the shower out in the open wasn't an issue for my wife and I, but think this should be something that's noted on the website. Speaking of the website, the page for this particular location doesn't show a single photo of the property at all, all the photos by the hotel are stock Aloft pics. Back In September I attributed that to the hotel being new, but it's been five months, and an accurate representation of the rooms should be on the site. Where the downgrade in stars comes from is the condition of the room we had: -It started at the door to the room. The sensor where you swipe your room card to get in was missing it's faceplate. There was just the white circle sensor. -The window shades were crumpled on the edges and in some spots off their tracks, making them difficult to raise and lower without stuffing the edges back in. One track's inner guide was partially hanging out, which I was able to pull back in. -The shower didn't drain properly, and water filled the shower basin so quickly, you had to stop the water to let the water drain so it wouldn't overflow onto the floor. There is no visible drain (it's underneath a silver plate, but I can imagine what lay beneath it), and I wasn't going to call downstairs mid-shower. It should have been noticed when the shower was cleaned -There were 1/2"-1/4" gaps between a few of the wood laminate floor pieces. That's just lazy construction. -The toilet bowl had a light red stain around the water level. Poor cleaning. -The toilet roll holder was partially pulled away from the wall. All of this from a hotel that's been open five months. These are things you might see from a hotel that's been operating for quite a bit longer. Things break-fix it, wood flooring may need to be replaced, cut the right length. Fixtures get pulled out, fix them. It's like they don't care, and coming from a Marriott-branded hotel franchised or not, is a disappointment. I've stayed at other Alofts, all much older and all better kept. While the actual bed was nice, the sheets were clean, the decline in the room condition means I'll be looking elsewhere when I return to Savannah. Like others have said, there are better choices within walking distance for a similar price. Hopefully they can get their act together, but right now it's not a place I'd recommend.
Avoid
It might be tempting to give this hotel some slack because it’s new and because it’s often the cheapest hotel in its “class” in downtown Savannah. But there are so many things wrong here that make it a poor choice. The good things are the stylish design and the location, admittedly on the edge of gentrification but walking distance to quite a bit. Parking charges (at $28) are absurdly high. When we were here, the garage entry system was broken, meaning that you had to call the desk from your cell phone each time you entered (we were once kept waiting for 10 minutes), and the lack of signage meant that arriving and getting in to the garage was a totally confusing experience. Parking alternatives are a problem, however, because of the very high crime rate in the area where the hotel is located. If you won’t need your car much, it might make sense to park on the street or city garage in a safer neighborhood and Uber back to the hotel. The biggest problem here is the staff – poorly chosen and trained. The afternoon desk person who checked us in was one of the rudest hotel staffers we have ever encountered. When we went down for breakfast we encountered the hipster who handled the overnight shift, but he explained that he was “on break,” so we waited for him to finish his breakfast before we ordered our own (the process for ordering food – you do it from the front desk – is among the many quirky practices that are never explained, with no signage, so that you have to depend on the wacky staff to tell you how it all works). The morning person seemed more competent, but she was overwhelmed, so that wait times for anything were a problem. The rooms are small but attractive and mostly convenient. In our case, the main problem was a HVAC system that simply didn’t work properly. The thermostat was impossibly complicated, but the gist of it was that the room was either freezing or overheated, with no way to settle in the middle. We twice called the desk, as the system is apparently also controlled by a central computer, but the guy would rudely tell us that he had fixed the problem, we should wait a bit, etc. The hotel has used Covid as an excuse to eliminate in-room coffee makers. They do put out coffee (free) for a few hours in the lobby (which makes no sense in terms of Covid exposure), but if you want coffee at any other time you are directed to the run-down convenience store next door. All of the Covid protocols here seem designed to save the hotel money, but the practical effects are nil, as the hotel is full of guests who fill up the public areas, never wearing masks. There's a really great little gym, but it has no Covid restrictions to limit the number or proximity of guests, and it was very hot and himid, probably from the adjacent tiny indoor pool). This stay was a particular disappointment for both of us. We both travel often to Savannah and had hoped this might be a reasonably priced alternative downtown. We will probably not return, and one of us cancelled his future reservations here. The best Savannah options for us seem to be either the Courtyard at the airport (great new hotel with wonderful staff, free parking, and reasonable rates) or the more expensive and stylish Alida downtown for when we want to splurge.
Absolutely Horrible Experience
My husband and I drove over five hours for a stay that was booked two months in advance. With confirmation emails and proper paperwork, we were refused a stay based on the unprofessional management refusal to help us. Instead, we were forced to contact customer service on our own. The manager was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. Who makes their guest confirm their own reservation?! I will never stay at this hotel!! Very unprofessional and disrespectful manager and GM!!!! Don’t stay here!!! Terrible experience and will write as many rev of our experience as I can!!!
