Disgusting practice cancelling bookings made way in advance

Reviewed 21 october, 2021

Have had to put an October date but the review relates to a planned December stay. We go every year in December and booked it way in advance. Then today we got a message saying they had cancelled our booking because the hotel was exclusively booked out for another function. Excuse me we were booked months ahead so how can it be that we are cancelled. Then they are sending emails about a refund saying thyve given other options not cancelled. I've been there 3 times this year.. we wont be booking again. This is absolutely disgusting behaviour they dont deserve regular customers... loyalty is not rewarded.

A typical Brittania hotel

After checking all the poor reviews I had to pay a visit just to see how accurate they are and here is my honest opinion. On arrival we were an hour early but as our room was ready the pleasant young lad on reception let us check in. We had requested a lower floor room as I am disabled and pleased to note this was accommodated. The room was in the lower extention of the hotel overlooking the car park. It was very clean and had everything we needed but turned out that the toilet flush was broken and after a quick fix by maintenance that didn't quite fix the problem we were given another room. Just glad we hadn't unpacked. The new room was even better. Much bigger but still overlooking the car park. It was very clean and had everything we needed. After settling in we made our way to the bar for a drink but no one was there to serve. Some people had already been waiting half hour so I went to reception to ask and someone was sent along. The bar area is quite small and grubby with black and yellow tape running across the carpet from covid times. Pretty sure this could be removed now. There is a lovely brass foot rest running around the bar which is crying out for a clean. Obviously hasn't been cleaned in a long time and it would definitely benefit from a little buffing up. Drinks are reasonably priced and a 4hr happy hr from 2pm until 6pm with a couple of drinks priced at just £2.50 which is quite good. The evening barman is canny and friendly and turned out to be from my neck of the woods so we got on canny. The restaurant offers breakfast and evening meals. Previous reviews slated the food so we booked both evening meal for £13.95 and breakfast for £8.00 Now I am being totally honest. The evening meal was to die for, and when I say that I mean if I had ate it I think I would have died. In my many hotel stays I have witnessed some dire food but nothing as dire as this. Main meal was Liver and onions or ham and gravy. The liver was the cheapest liver ever so probably pigs and tasted boiled. Inedible. The ham was as dry as sandpaper. Minimal choice of veg. Baby boiled potatoes cauliflower and brocoli. No carrots or peas. I think the chef should reconsider his position. To actually want a payment for this meal is shocking because it was honestly only fit for the bin. Breakfast was no better. Thinnest bread possible for toast. Sausages had a nasty After taste. Eggs were hard. Bacon was hard. Mushrooms were tinned and rancid. The beans were actually ok. I think when your paying £8.00 you expect better quality than this. Needless to say we didn't use the restaurant for the rest of our stay. I will say however that the bar snacks are a different story. A much better offering and surprisingly nice. So if you can survive your visit by eating just the bar snacks you'll be OK. There are a few options ranging from toasted sandwiches/ panninis to chicken curry / chilli concarny etc. Much better than the restaurant. OK the above may sound harsh but i like to be honest. The location of the hotel isn't the best either. A bit off the beaten track so if you struggle with walking and haven't got transport you may struggle. We didn't have the best stay as I imagine you have gathered by now. For all our room was clean and had everything we needed, the beds were hard and only one pillow was provided. On asking for another pillow it took a further ask and 24 hrs later before it was provided. Parking is available at a charge of £6 per day. I have stayed at other hotels on the same stretch who only charge £3 I am glad i tried this hotel because its always good to know which ones to stay clear of and this one is definitely going in the little black book. I am very sceptical about any positive reviews that have been left for this hotel. I think the best thing about this hotel was the exit.

We booked a 2 night stay in September to stay 26th to 28th Oct, received an email this morning to say they have cancelled our booking due to an exclusive booking who have full run of the hotel, this would have been our 3rd stay this year, the clifton has now lost my business, in future we will stay elsewhere.

Clean, comfortable, no problems.

I've just stayed here for one night, as part of an Acklams Mystery Coach Tour and was very apprehensive after reading these reviews, but have no complaints. The single room 248 was actually a double, with clean sheets, a mattress topper and good pillows. There was an adjustable radiator, so was warm if you wanted it. The bathroom was small but modern with walk in shower and nice towels. Take your own toiletries, as only soap and some strange watery shower gel in a dispenser is provided. Everything including kettle and cups was clean. The TV was a good size and the remote was in a plastic bag. Yes the carpets are old, (I always take slippers), and as it is a Britannia hotel it's not the most luxurious, but fine for a couple of nights. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fine. Fruit segments, yogurt, porridge, bacon, sausage, eggs fried or scrambled, tinned mushrooms and tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns, fried bread, brown and white bread to toast with jam and marmalade. The coffee wasn't very nice and the evening meal buffet choices were limited, with only 2 veg, but salad is provided too and what I did have was tasty with hot plates. Lager is £4 a pint and gin and tonic £6.70. Happy hour is until 6pm with pints at £2.50. The reason I've only given 3 stars and not 4 is because it is the location, a bit of a way from the centre, and the entertainment and lounge area let's it down. The singer was dire lol and the way the area is laid out isn't very good. For a couple of nights though and on coach trip prices, this place is fine and doesn't deserve some of the very negative review comments here.

Tired hotel needing TLC

Not very good to stay here, the lift is from Victorian days with the old cages type, the carpets are ancient and worn away, the mattresses are so hard , old fashioned cheap furnishings, the restaurant is lovely with beautiful decor and chandeliers but the food is awful , I tried a few times in my stay and had to leave and eat out elsewhere, the reception staff are so nice but dining staff look so bored and fed up, no friendly chat in them whatsoever, , sorry Clifton but wont be back , poor building needs a complete makeover or knocked down, also it's a bit far out for amenities etc, long walk , Britannia company needs looking into this hotel, not worth the money , go elsewhere
