Another very nice few days at the Glen - warm, friendly, relaxing, good food and a comfortable room - just what the doctor ordered! Close to town and the beach, and both the hotel and Sidmouth were much busier than I expected for November. Excellent value too. Thanks to all for a lovely stay.

On arrival there were no parking spaces. We were instructed to put our car in a small field and to get as far back and close to a hedge as possible. Pulling a suitcase over grass whilst carrying other possessions is hard work. At check in we were asked to decide on my daughter's meal - fish or sausages. We were told this was so the chef could prepare - checked in at 5pm, dinner booked for 645pm! We cancelled our reservation after seeing our room! The bedroom smelt awful (really awful!) - old and unclean. The headboard was worn and grubby. The double bed was horribly uncomfortable, you could feel the springs in the mattress. The beds were different heights adding to the unattractiveness of the room. A rotten doorframe. An artex ceiling. An old chandelier in a far corner. A ripped net curtain. A carpet possibly from the 70s! Tiny framed faded pictures on the anaglypta walls. A TV the size of a laptop. A general air of neglect. Apart from the mouldy grout and silicone in the bathroom, the toilet seat, bizarrely, was fitted incorrectly at an angle!! The dips in it forced you to sit sideways whilst having a wee!! The room was situated off the carpark - literally you stepped out of the carpark to our door! – where two people sat smoking. To get to our room we had to walk through their smoke which then followed us in. Smoking in any part of a hotel is unacceptable! The bacon in my breakfast was not freshly cooked and had a white/grey residue on it that I scrapped off but which put me off eating. Although dark in colour, my tea tasted like the water used had been warm instead of boiling. The apple juice was nice! This is the most unpleasant hotel I have ever stayed in! My daughter, who had been excited about visiting (there are some lovely pictures online!!) was very disappointed and found it hard to hold back the tears when we first entered our room. At a price of £208 a night the accommodation was wholly and completely unacceptable and just downright horrible.
Excellent is every respect

Stayed here for a four night break in early October. Reception very friendly and room (The Duke Room) spotless. Covid precautions were excellent with a one way system still in operation and sanitiser readily available. Dinner and breakfast were all table service and food quality was of a very high standard. Lounges were comfortable and quiet places to relax in. Just a two minute walk to the Esplanade. Only one slight drawback was the car park which at times was difficult to use because of the layout. If you want high class old fashioned service, then this is for you - no rush and nothing too much trouble. We would highly recommend this hotel and found Sidmouth a quaint and interesting town with good walks and small individual shops.
Always a relaxing visit

I started staying at The Royal Glen when I started taking solo walking holidays whilst my partner was away on business trips. The staff are always welcoming and helpful and the hotel is well situated just a few minutes walk to the sea. This summer my partner joined me at the hotel; they are now also a fan. We had a good few summer evenings enjoying glasses of wine on their patio. The afternoon tea was also excellent. We had such a lovely stay in July we decided to return for a few days in October. Again, our stay this week was perfect. The room was comfortable, clean, and well decorated. The staff were helpful and accommodating. We will absolutely stay again next year.

Had a fantastic bank holiday break at the Glen Hotel, location is super and the staff are very helpful. They kept the hotel very clean and tidy and although the hotel is old the bathrooms are very modern and I was happy :)
