A wild goose chase trying to find it!

Reviewed 25 november, 2021

It's not actually called the "Mercure London Staines-upon-Thames Hotel" if that is what you were expecting to look for. When you eventually manage to find the hotel, you discover it's named "The Thames Lodge". Very helpfully, none of the signs outside are illuminated in any case, so be prepared to waste a lot of time trying to find the place in the dark.

Fawtly Towers on crack!

I am utterly appalled by my recent stay at Mercure Staines-Upon-Thames. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in! I stayed with a friend last night, in a dirty dingy room, located in the attic. The wallpaper was peeling from the ceiling, there was dirt on the walls, curtains and furniture. Did I mention the spiders??? There were several radiators within the room and not one was working. Given that it is November, I was hoping for central heating. I asked reception and they stated that the radiators were not working. Evidently, there were purely for decoration. I was provided with an electric heater. This smelt of burning however, given that it was freezing, we had no choice. The reason for our stay was due to attending a Wedding in the locality. My friend and I arrived back at the hotel at approximately 0100 hours. We were greeted at the door by a male dressed in a white shirt and black waistcoat. He was stood at the entrance smoking. We started walking up the stairs towards our room, when a male voice barked at us, "WHAT ROOM ARE YOU IN?" We turned to see that it was the same man, who seconds before had politely greeted us. I asked why he needed to know and felt somewhat intimated that there were now two other men, dressed in tracksuits, stood with him. They seemed to find this hilarious. He replied, "BECAUSE I ASKED YOU." My friend and I felt very intimidated and outnumbered. I told him that I was not going to give my room number, as I was worried that these men may follow us to our room. I instead showed my room key card. This appeared to appease the angry male member of staff who then walked off. He was so incredibly rude and made us feel most unwelcome and intimated at the same time. I did not sleep at all last night, with the worry that someone would come to the room. The one thing that I looked forward to this morning was a shower. To add insult to injury... there was NO HOT WATER! How can you expect people to pay to stay at your hotel and not provide basic amenities? Surely this is just basic human rights! This is an absolute disgrace. I expect prisoners experience better living conditions! Avoid this hotel at all costs!

Extremely disappointed

We stayed here for a couple of nights for Thorpe Park. The location of the hotel is fantastic for getting to Thorpe Park but sadly that’s where it’s positives end. Besides I start, I will say that the staff are lovely, I have no fault with them, the following is purely regarding the hotel itself. We were given the option to upgrade (which we did) and found that for an extra £35 per night all we received were 4 small bottles of water and 4 small bottles of Pepsi (I’m assuming this is what they called the ‘minibar’ in the upgrade communication) - We we’re shown to the wrong room first, ironically which was actually better than the ‘upgraded room’ at least the first one had a fridge! The hotel smells extremely damp and fusty and in desperate need of an upgrade. Mirrors cracked and sockets not working we’re just a couple of the minor issues in our room. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and only 1 pillow each. The photos for this place definitely make it look far far better than it actually is and it is definitely not worth the prices been charged to stay here. We definitely won’t be returning to this hotel.

Vile

Stayed here many times when visiting Thorpe Park. Would have always recommended this hotel however, not any more. Run down, dirty and has a horrible atmosphere. We have since found out that the hotel is being used to house refugees from Afghanistan. We have no issue with this however, we should have been advised at time of booking so we could make an informed decision. The hotel has definitely gone down hill in terms of cleanliness. Our room was disgusting. Mould, rust and what appeared to be blood on one of the chairs. Loved this hotel in previous years, would not ever recommend or stay again.

Such a Shame

As a group of 4 friends, we have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and have always had a very enjoyable experience. We love the proximity to Thorpe Park and the local bars and would never stay anywhere else. The hotel used to be lovely. Really clean, great atmosphere, lovely rooms and excellent customer service. The Riverside location used to be lovely to sit outside with a drink, relax and watch the world go by. The last time we stayed was October 2019 for Thorpe Park Fright Nights and it was at its usual high standard. I honestly can't believe how much it has changed over the past 2 years. On arrival yesterday, I was shocked to see how rundown the hotel was on the outside. The paint was chipping off and the grounds looked untidy. The reception area hadn't changed much, however, the toilets in the reception area were smelly and looked old and in need of a serious refurbishment. We were early as we were going to Thorpe park for the day so we told the receptionist we had parked in the car park (paid for the parking which was £5) and said we would be back to check in later. When we got back to the hotel, we checked in and went to our rooms. I was shocked to see how dilapidated the hotel looks. The carpets are filthy and have bumps everywhere, the walls are all marked and dirty and it just had a really weird atmosphere. There were people just sat all around the hotel and it was obvious to see that these people were living at the hotel which gave it a hostel feel. We have had many rooms over the years and all have been lovely but this time the room was dated, scruffy and we had also been given an adjoining room to the one next door. The door was closed and a heater had been put in front of it but we could hear the people next door through the door. The room just didn't compare to any room we had stayed in at this hotel before. It didn't even seem like the same hotel! The bathroom was clean but again, really scruffy and in desperate need of a makeover. The bed was comfy and the sheets were clean. As we were on the ground floor, by 7am, the hotel was really noisy. People talking outside our door and with the noise from the people next door, it was impossible to have a nice, relaxing morning. Walking through the hotel to checkout was weird too. Loads of people just sat around the hotel again. It made us feel like we were walking through a house of multiple occupancy. There was also loads of security which made the hotel feel unsafe. The service we received from the staff was good but unfortunately, that is the only positive thing I can say. It is such a shame to see a lovely hotel change so much. We are gutted that our 'go to' hotel that we stay in every year has been allowed to decline to a point that it is now unrecognisable. What happened to all the lovely rooms? Why is it so scruffy now? Unfortunately that will be our last stay at this hotel.
