Outstanding hotel restaurant in the heart of Sydney’s CBD

Reviewed 14 january, 2021

OK, so you may find more salubrious surroundings in the Sydney CBD to have lunch than The Occidental Hotel, but this pub’s quality restaurant offerings and the genuine warmth of the experience are simply unbeatable. Sitting pretty on the 1st Floor of the glorious Occi Hotel is The Fairmont Restaurant, a classy and refined haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city’s streets, and featuring a mouth-watering menu and seasoned team of hospitality professionals who deliver the goods every time. We genuinely struggled with our Entree selections . . . what do you leave out from Seared scallops, Spicy Peking duck pancakes, Blue Swimmer crab angel hair pasta, Salt & pepper squid, or hand-chosen Sydney Rock Oysters? But don’t go too hard too early because The Occi is best known for its famous steaks, a result of this pub being owned and operated by legendary Hotelier Fred Newton, of Glenmore Meats fame. The fabulous food and superb wine list here is complemented, thankfully, by a wide range of traditional beers and a wonderful pub atmosphere that embraces you the minute you walk through the doors. The Fairmont Restaurant at The Occidental Hotel is perfect for client business meetings, group bookings, special occasions or just a nice catch-up in the city with friends. But be warned . . . after you’ve climbed the wooden staircase and marveled at the Victorian Regency Style decor, you may find yourself wistfully remembering yesteryear and re-telling famous old stories. Or just simply not wanting to return to work! Love this place. And well done to the management team at this fine establishment. It is superbly run.

Accidentally came across the Occidental..

Decided to drop in for a quiet ale with a mate as we walked pass this pub - a traditional style pub, small, but served up a cold beer which was the important thing and the reason we were there..! Close to the local Wynyard Railway Station - reasonable prices, especially during happy hour. Worth a try..

Networking drink after a 3 day training course

Reviewed 15 august, 2019

After an amazing 3 day training course we headed down to the pub for a beer and a bit of a chin wag. This great old fashioned corner pub was alive with people when we got there around 5pm. Apart from waiting a while to grab a beer and having nowhere that a group of people could stand and talk inside we headed to the footpath and held our gathering out there. The standing room only bench table was a brilliant idea. We were all able to huddle along the bench on both sides and have a great chat. Apologies to all teh passers-by as we inadvertently blocked the footpath on occasions as we shuffled around mixing with each other. I love this place and always bring the course attendees here afterwards to wash down the stress of the final course presentations they have to do.

Value to boot!

Reviewed 7 february, 2019

This older style “traditional” pub sits on the corner of York and Erskine Streets, a mere stones throw from Wynyard Station. On a bustling week night it can be hard to find a quiet spot but if you can, you’ll be treated to well priced drinks and food. Pints of Furphy ale are $7.50 (Feb 2019) and a hamburger or chicken burger with chips a mere $15 and fish and chips (surprise here was that it was actually grilled salmon!) was similarly priced. So find yourself a friend and grab a little table out of the noise (good luck with that) and enjoy.

Pub with No Beer

Reviewed 20 december, 2018

Visiting the Occidental on Tuesday evening of this week I was looking forward to a pleasant social get together with friends. I got there at about 6pm and clearly the bar staff (only 2 of them😬) had already had a bad day and were certainly not in the Christmas spirit. I soon understood why. They were out of FIVE of their top draught beers!!! This is a pub and it’s the week before Christmas so how on earth can they run out of beer??? We moved on and had a great night elsewhere.
