More about the hotel
Great MLK Jr Weekend Getaway
We stayed here for a long weekend getaway. Close to the airport and major roads. Also walkable to restaurants. Check-in was easy (did most via the app). Room was nice - not bath tub - just shower. Breakfast was decent - finally no grab and go - actually hot breakfast (first since COVID in a hotel for us). Breakfast was included in our rate, but was accidentally charged for one of the days - but when I inquired about that via their chat feature on the app it was quickly remedied. Would recommend and stay at again.
One night
Our son had a 9 am meeting do we drive up from estero the night before and had a room reserved for the three of us. 139 plus tax for the night. Very modern place and free parking. Lexi was the gal who checked us in and she was terrific. Place was clean and they allow pets. We did not have a pet but there were a few in the hotel. Very well located as well.
Great hotel
I moved to this hotel after checking out early from The Epicurean due to extensive noise issues. The hotel upgraded me to a wonderful suite that was a really cool room. The hotel is close to some great dining options and provides shuttle service to/fr airport. It is a very nice hotel at a great value. Close to everything and if you are on a short trip and flying in/out of TPA then I highly recommend the hotel. Much better than the Epicurean on all levels in my opinion.
Solitary Guest
I was getting itchy to travel somewhere (anywhere), during this time and happened upon a very cheap flight from NJ to Tampa on UA. I had read the reviews of this property and decided to book it for one night. Since 'social distancing', I didn't want to be in the midst of a crowded city, so a small airport hotel fit the bill. Upon arrival at the airport, I called the front desk and Stazia told me the van would be there in 5 minutes. It was, with Stazia driving. At the hotel, she got out of the van and went behind the desk which had all the necessary partitions and sanitizing products, to check me in. The lobby is clean & modern with a small area to the right with snacks & beverages for purchase. Heading to the elevator I noticed the dining and bar area were closed, but it was noon, so I didn't think much about it at that time. I found out later that there isn't any food service currently. The elevator only allows 2 people ( there are 2 'Xs' on the floor) at a time, but no one else was there, so no problem. My room was clean, spacious and modern with a view of the large pool. There is an empty mini fridge, coffee maker & 2 paper cups (no water. Also there was no hotel info or menus, no radio or clock- again, most likely due to the current situation. The shower was large and had bottles of shampoo, conditioner & body wash attached to the shower wall. Towels were a bit thin, and the only individual amenities were a small wrapped soap and a mini bottle of hand cream. No glassware in the bath (guess you can use the paper coffee cup?). The tv remote seemed clean, couldn't really tell) and the bed seemed comfy, but the pillows were like 4 long thin foam bolsters. I decided to walk around outside and was told there was a big shopping mall about a 10 min walk away. There are also a number of restaurants very nearby (Coopers Hawk winery, Del Friscos, Kona Grill etc), but as the hotel is located in the middle of a corporate park, they are open for lunch & dinner only and there are no other stores close by. Returning to the hotel, I was informed I was the only hotel guest and while they were housing 20 nurses ( who worked at a nearby Covid testing center), the hotel staff numbered 2 (Stazia and a housekeeping manager). She also told me that most of the other area hotels were closed and there are no options for breakfast, (aside from going to the airport). If they hadn't gotten the contract for the nurses, they too would be closed. I only stayed one night and Stazia took me back to the airport the next morning, while housekeeping watched the desk. I was on a discounted rate, but glad I didn't opt for the additional cost that includes breakfast, as there'd is none.
The Tesla of Hotels!
The AC Hotel in Tampa is like a Tesla in every way. It’s sleek, modern, minimalist, comfortable, balanced, and breakfast is not included with the price. Why is not included? Because you wouldn’t eat powdered eggs and a burnt waffle in a Tesla, that’s why! For the cost of your IHOP pancake combo and a Coke, you’ll enjoy a European style buffet breakfast with espresso, various meats and pastries, egg dish of you choice, and various other things that aren’t in your kitchen at home like vanilla almond milk. You’re at the AC now…you fancy. After staying at 11 different Marriott properties in Tampa at every price point, I ended up settling in the AC Hotel for well over 100 days this year. In the process, I nominated myself as the AC Hotel Tampa Airport Fan Club President. It is my honor to give you a very detailed review of every aspect observed in 2,000 words or less. PROs: SERVICE - if this staff was at the Bate’s Motel, I’d still give it 5 stars despite the incident in the shower. STYLE - the Renaissance & JW may claim to be fancy, but being in the AC is like getting into that exclusive night club; only, you can wear flip-flops and you don’t get kicked out for falling asleep. LOCATION - you can walk to a fancy steak house, a less fancy steak house, a low brow sports bar, a high brow cigar bar, a fancy wine bar, the Buck’s football stadium, the Yankees spring training field, and soon, a Starbucks. Also, with the right pair of shoes, you could technically walk to the airport or mall. Luckily the hotel has a free shuttle. CLEANLINESS - you know that filling of going into a COVID ransacked Walmart? Yeah, this is the complete opposite of that. I’m not one to lick elevator buttons, but I know I could here. They constantly wipe everything down, put on fresh gloves before handing anything to you, and have sanitizer readily available. They also closed the breakfast buffet and bar well before the city’s direction in an effort to protect the guests. They truly care about cleanliness and it shows. The good part is, if you are really hooked on getting that free breakfast, they now serve free coffee, yogurt, and a KIND bar every morning since they’ve had to close the kitchen. It’s nice, but still no burnt waffle. GYM - I don’t know if you lift bro, but I’m known in certain circles as my dinosaur name, “Swole-o-saurus Flex”. If you’re looking for a hotel to turn those calves into steers, look no more. The cable machine is the best in the business, there are a couple benches and the standard dumbbell selection, plus clean mats, medicine balls, and even one of those big inflatable balls that you see people lay on like a bench. I’m scared of that one…but they have it! Everything is spacious and clean unlike other hotel gyms that shoved 4 old treadmills in a coat closet in the basement. With that said, look at the pictures and if you want more, the only place in town with a better gym is the Renaissance. They win solely on having a Peloton bike with a few more machines; the layout was still a bit cramped. QUIETNESSITY - of all the hotels near the airport, you will not find one more quiet. It’s not near the flight pattern (looking at you Marriott Westshore), not right by the highway (Courtyard), and you don’t hear loud music and people screaming at the bar (Four Points by Sheraton). To be fair, this is a newer building with solid construction and a good location. A close second to quietest is ironically the Marriott Airport where you can watch planes take off from your room and can walk from your room to TSA security in 5 minutes. Also, despite having a room overlooking the pool at the AC Hotel, I heard virtually nothing from the evening crowds unlike some 2 am pool parties (looking at you Fairfield Inn). PARKING - there is not a better hotel in Tampa with free parking. If you want to pay $20 or more a night and have valet, maybe look into the Epicurean or Current but I still prefer AC. You still get a covered parking garage but you can come and go as you please. You still get to go back and get your cellphone you forgot in the car without taking forever. Best of all, you still park on the ground level of the garage, only a few yards from the main entrance and avoid waiting in lines getting in and out of the garage (looking at you Westshore Grand). SELF LAUNDRY - best of class. Seriously, no hotel has the quality of washing machines. My biggest gripe is nice hotels dont have laundry. Real laundry. Not “$5 to press, fold, and hang your pair of underwear” laundry. The machines are new and you pay with your credit card. For about $2 a load, it is way cheaper than the local Laundromats any you can sit by pool while your clothes dry. Even the laundry room is clean and modern looking. Unlike others that are down a random hallway in a broom closet with a burnt out light and a dryer that doesn’t work and I have to lay my underwear in the window to dry (looking at you Marriott Airport). CONs: Marriott is not endorsing my AC Hotel Tampa Airport Fan Club Presidency. However, some of the AC staff has chosen to embrace my title. No Microwave - No microwave in the room although there is one in the buffet area available. Phone - there is nothing more minimalist than the phone provided in the room. I have no idea why there are buttons with numbers because I couldn’t figure out how to get a dial tone. Super weird but seriously, you use your phone to open the door; use it to call or message the front desk through the app. Who uses phones that connect to the wall anyway? Amirite? Light Switch Puzzle - The light switches require a couple minutes to really figure out, otherwise you’ll feel like you’re in an “Escape Room” figuring out the secret combo to get to bed. Once you get it down, it’s really easy. Loud AC - The air conditioner is slightly louder than some of the nicer hotels but it works great, and the touch panel is easy to use. Elevator ding - specifically the elevator on the left may be the loudest of any hotel. If you stay right across from it, you will hear it. Fitted bed sheet slippage - if you don’t get your room serviced daily, I’ve found the fitted sheets slip off after 2-3 days. They also smell after a week if you keep your “do not disturb” sign on the door and don’t take a bath. Not that I know. The “Splash” of Modern - as the saying goes, “if you want a modern shower, you got to splash some water”. Thats not right and really not cleaver but maybe just expect some water to splash out of the shower and around the sink. Totally worth having the coolest hotel bathroom. Remember that time you were at that “other” hotel and you were showering in a tub and the A/C kicked on? Remember? That old dirty plastic shower curtain blew inward and stuck to your thigh. Yeah, I just threw a big towel on the floor and “fixed the glitch.” Dining - it's not really a con, but more just an expectation setter. There is not a full service restaurant and professional chef here. When you order a steak, expect the quality higher than IHOP but lower than Outback. The bar provides great “pre-game” options with small plates, lots of drink options, but a limited wine list. The good news is there are multiple options within a block at every price-point (to include Outback). AC HOTEL HACKS: A MacBook slides perfectly into the bed side table Coffee table rolls under the bench under the tv for ultimate dance parties The tray with the coffee machine easily fits next to the bed and you can plug it in right there. You then can totally roll over an make your coffee without getting out of bed. #thuglife Take the reading light and point it under the shade to make a super cool nightlight Place a folded hand towel in front of the sink. If you wash your hands aggressively (as you should), this prevents the counter in front of the sink to get wet, which prevents a wet spot on the crotch of your pants, which prevents the hostess at Outback to laugh and call, “Mr. P.P. Pants. Party of one. Mr. P.P. Pants?” BONUS ROUND PROS: SERVICE - seriously, this is the 1992 Dream Team of hotel staff. From the top, down, I’m truly amazed of how well I’ve witness all of the guests are treated at the counter, at breakfast, at the bar, and by the cleaning & maintenance staff. Cynthia at breakfast is one of the most pleasant people in the world and has mastered her “sorry the breakfast is not free” spiel and has calmed down various upset people who really wanted to burn a waffle. Amanda and Gary at the bar could not be more enjoyable to chat with over a drink. I bet Gary could write an advice column and a self-help book. Both are just very kind hearted people. The night shift has greeting me nearly every day at 5am as if I was an old friend they hadn’t seen in ages. I normally return the greeting with a grunt but they still seem happy to see me. The day shift is all equally cheerful and I have not had a single issue or complaint. Also, during this quarantine, they have became almost the only human interaction I had and I’m grateful for it. The maintenance staff is awesome and have kept everything top-notch. I know they are friendly because I say hi to them but I never actually needed them for one single issue for 4 months. Finally, the cleaning staff are the heroes. Although the entire staff does it part to continually sanitize everything, the cleaning staff continues to do amazing work and wear masks, gloves, and go well out of their way to protect the guests, staff, and themselves. Even after having to witness how heartbreaking it was to see this amazing staff be reduce significantly due to the virus, its amazing that the remaining team was able to come together and continue to provide the highest standard service. That does not happen by accident. I think the quality of the AC team and how it is led has been the key to their success. The management, Arron and Amy, are like the neighbors I would gladly loan my lawnmower to. They are the neighbors that would then return the lawnmower with a full tank, professionally cleaned, and maybe even waxed. They’d probably cut your grass too when you weren’t home. Honestly, I’d probably just let them keep the lawnmower. Thats how nice they are. In closing, as I write this, we are still in the midst of the COVID quarantine which is why I have the time to write a 2,000 word review. Being mostly isolated to a hotel during this time makes me that much more pleased with my choice to stay here. I’ve embraced my surroundings and appreciate the minimalist design, the cleanliness of the common areas, and the friendliness of the staff. I’ll look back at this time and this hotel fondly. It is truly among the best. Plus, you can poop in a square toilet. Signed, Mr. President
