Very Comfortable Night

Very nice double room, with double glazing, so little to no traffic noise, comfortable beds, and a coffeemaker at the front of the hotel. Wet room bathroom with double basins, free soaps and toiletries. We stayed the night to see a concert at Tivoli and found the staff helpful and friendly, and happy to speak English as needed. Very close to a tram stop, so really easy to get around on public transport.
Solid 3 stars.

Stayed here for 1 night in July 2019, partner's birthday gift in Amsterdam. We picked this hotel because there was free parking and direct links to the Utrecht town centre. Utrecht is an adorable city, and I would stay at this hotel again. The shower is nice, however, they could give one extra floor towel. You could open the window, but in July it was quite hot in our room and the air conditioning didn't work. The best thing was that we arrived early and they let us check in at around 10am.
Will Not Stay Here

Working regularly in Utrecht over the last 12 months you initially give a variety of hotels the once over. The Bastion was one of the hotels within walking distance & at the lower end of the price spectrum it always cropped up as a potential choice. I guess I must have stayed there 4 maybe 5 times but not since November last year & I won't go back - I would rather commute to the office. The first impression of the hotel is not great, electric gates & surrounded by an electric fence. Rooms are what can only be described as functional - beds are not the most comfortable I have ever slept in & cleanliness was only average. Food is acceptable - the burger done medium rare can be excellent but after an unfortunate night (spent not too far from the bathroom - I have no proof it was the food & my conclusion may be adding 2 + 2 and making 5, but rightly or wrongly I came up with 4) I haven't been back. Perhaps I have become a hotel snob - the one incident aside it is an acceptable, if not very memorable place to get your head down for a single night. Unfortunately I do (rightly or wrongly) relate the incident to the food & as a regular (3 days a week) traveller this place simply isn't good enough to stay unless there is no alternative within 50km.
