The views are amazing

We stayed here only one night so we could be closer to the airport. The place was absolutely stunning and quaint. It has a rustic yet contemporary European feel. The dining experience was great. Breakfast provided fresh butter, yogurt, and cream. As there is a cattle farm nearby. The views are amazing driving there and it is very close to the poas volcano. Such beautiful grounds to enjoy.
Extortion With a View

We recently spent 9 days in Costa Rica. Tourism is down due to Covid. In fact, most of the places we stayed, we were the only two people on the property.
We were trying to get closer to SJO for our flight out so we decided to stay in the Vara Blanca/Poas Volcano area. We checked the Poas Volcano Lodge website in the morning and saw there were rooms available including a room with a queen bed for $141. We didn’t make a reservation as the website showed plenty of rooms.
When we arrived at the Poas lodge, the parking lot was empty. The VERY unfriendly woman working in reception asked if we had a reservation. We said we didn’t but had seen plenty of rooms on the website. She said there were only 2 rooms available…one for $237 and the other for $300. We told her the website showed plenty of rooms, and she said the lodge was fully booked for that night and repeated that there were only two rooms. We stepped outside to consider our options and decided that since we were there, we would splurge and take the $237 room.
On the walk to the room, we noticed at least 4 empty rooms ready to go. When we got to the room, the woman opened the door to show us a room with 3 beds. She said dinner and breakfast were also included in the price. We looked at the room and told her we had no use for 3 beds and would be leaving before breakfast and asked again about the other vacant rooms we had noticed. The woman said since we didn’t have a reservation there were only the two rooms she had previously offered. I told her to cancel the $237 room.
We stepped outside again and made a reservation on the Poas Volcano Lodge website for the $141 room. We went back inside and told her we had a reservation. She said there was a problem with the website and the $141 room was not available. She then called her boss. I listened as the woman told him how we had shown up without a reservation, how she had told us there were only two rooms, how, even though the parking lot was empty, they were booked and check-in was at 2 pm. She told him we had taken the $237 room the cancelled it, stepped outside and came back in saying we had a reservation. I then heard her tell him how we were “foreigners but one speaks Spanish.” She listened to him for a minute, then got off the phone and told us again that there were no rooms available other than the $237 or $300 room.
We told her that this was shady beyond belief and a bunch of crap and left. Four hours later, we received an email that our $141 room reservation had been accepted, and they were waiting for us at the Poas Volcano Lodge. I hope they are still waiting as we would NEVER stay there due to their attempted extortion.
Quiet little gem

We chose Poas Volcano Lodge as we wanted our first stop after flying into San Jose to be a short drive from the airport and it did not disappoint. The setting is lovely - bucolic countryside, green rolling hills with a view of the volcano (although the top was shrouded in cloud). There are some lovely trails on the property and they offer rubber boots and walking sticks. It's a quiet, secluded property with nice staff and the hotel interior is beautiful. Our room was small but it was one of the cheapest ones and big enough for our 1 night stay. There's a games room with a snooker table which my kids loved. If you want some instant calm after the hectic flight, I can recommend a stay here.

We were VERY disappointed. We are a family of 2 women and a child and when he showed us the room and we mentioned bringing the luggage, he didn't say anything and walked away. I am 67 years old and have stayed at hotels often during my life and it's the first time ever that no one offered to get the luggage. We asked about a couple of things to do and he had no advise to give us. The wifi was terrible, I couldn't even load a page. The trails were closed off so that we could not walk them. It smelled like mildew and it was freezing at night. Not enough light in the room. There was a desk in the room for a computer but no outlet to plug it in. No refrigerator and no phone or TV. VERY overpriced. The room was pretty.

We had all of our hotels booked for us through CostaRica.org and every hotel was comfortable and this hotel did not disappoint. We stayed in the Tanager Rm 1 and enjoyed the views of the gardens, watching a storm come in and enjoying the rainbows afterwards, all from the comfort of our room. We hiked after the storm and were glad they had rubber boots and walking sticks to use. We enjoyed all our meals and met friendly guests from all over the world. The staff were friendly and helpful. I had one young man make me a special hot tea using natural herbs to help clear my stuffy nose. We enjoyed a couples massage in a very small room. I definitely recommend staying here.
