Good hotel, but how on earth can you place a smoking zone right in front of the entrance?

Reviewed 23 april, 2022

We stayed here for two nights during our Easter trip in Portugal. We enjoyed the location, short walking distance to the tram which brings you right away down to Porto. We received an upgrade to a Junior Suite with stunning views towards the ocean! The hotel is a bit older and so is the furniture and equipment, but everything worked well. The breakfats was good with sufficient options. The hotel was not very crowded tho when we were there. What I pointed out during my last stay in 2016 (!) was the totally misplaced smoking zone right in front of the main hotel entrance. There is a "lounge" area which is under a roof that every guest has to walk through. To my shocking experience, this area is Heaviside used as a smoking lounge by hotel guests. This means that any guest needs to walk through a cloud of toxic smoke when entering and leaving the hotel. The entire lobby and bar smell like smoke because of this. It is extremely irritating and health-damaging. I don't understand how in 2022 something like this can be acceptable by the hotel management. The smoke zone should be removed and smokers should be asked to smoke somewhere at the backside of the hotel - far away from the entrance. Generally a good stay, but the totally unacceptable situation with the smoking lounge right in the entrance drags down the score.

Fantastic hotel, friendly staff

Reviewed 5 december, 2021

This hotel proved to be a great choice. As a platinum member, I was upgraded to a spacious suite, but all of the rooms appeared to be on large. The room was extremely quiet, had good wifi, and plenty of TV channels. Also notable was a fantastic view of both the old town/river area in one direction, and the ocean (in the distance) in the other. The staff at the reception desk were amazing. They were extremely friendly and helpful, making a point to greet me every time I passed by. The hotel location isn’t central, but I enjoyed the more authentic feel of Vila Nova de Gaia. The hotel is around a 10-15 minute walk from the metro, though it is a bit of a maze to find it due to there not winding streets. Also note that the Vila Nova de Gaia-Devesas train station is walkable, and the trains from Porto to Coimbra and Lisbon stop there. I had a fantastic stay.

The best hotel in Porto excellent atmosphere, clean and COVID safe

Reviewed 26 may, 2021

The hotel is well located and spotlessly clean. You can walk to the riverbank in about 20-30 min passing some lovely shops, cafes and architecture, very pleasant walk. On arrival I was met with Beatriz on reception and her customer service was second to none! Wonderful customer service made me feel right at home following an early flight. The hotel room was immaculate and the views of Porto stunning. A good choice for breakfast and again the staff very well mannered and attentive. I love this hotel and everything about it! The bar is lovely , spacious ground floor. Taxi around Porto and Gaia €5-8 One of the best Holiday Inn in IHG !

The Spa was amazing !!

Reviewed 12 november, 2020

I knew already this Hotel and last year it was offered to me a spa treatment which I have used last weekend. Even with all the restrictions due to the covid, I felt very secure, everyone was too nice and Patricia , the spa therapist is incredible. I did not know about Holiday Inn's spa and body treatment and I just loved it. I will repeat for sure!

Amazing view in a safe and very friendly establishment

Reviewed 30 july, 2020

I felt very safe. One can see that every space, room and even the elevator are taken care of so one can feel at home and in a safe environment. The reception staff Sofia and Alexandre were extremely professional and very supportive and friendly as I was alone due to a health problem. I felt that if I had needed something, they would provide me with whatever I needed. Thank you both of them for their help. I will certainly recommend this hotel not only because it has an exceptional view of the city but also because it is worth the money. Finaly, the hotel offers a very reasonable variety of breakfast options considering the safety conditions!
