Questionable Business Practice
First off, for the price, you really can't go wrong. Staff are friendly, the location is nice, and although the rooms are a bit tired, they do the trick. My main complaint is their lack of transparency with room surcharges. They charge you a little bit extra per night for use of the safe key (at least I think that's how it was explained to me), but this isn't charged at the time of booking. It's only charged once you arrive to check-in, and it wasn't initially apparent even to the staff why there was a price discrepancy. Now, this charge is refundable upon checking out, but you need to request the refund, and despite what I was told in the apology letter from Econo Lodge after I complained about this questionable business practice, this information is not readily apparent unless you ask about it. I would honestly probably still recommend the hotel because the pros outweigh the cons, but just check your invoice and don't be afraid to speak up if the rates don't quite match.
Clean Room, Great Staff, Awesome View
We stayed in this hotel for a quick trip to the beach in October. The price was definitely right, as we were looking for a clean, reasonably priced option for a few days. The room was clean and well kept, with a small coffee maker, larger dorm-size refrigerator w/ separate freezer, and microwave. We had a small loveseat, chair, and coffee table, all in good condition. There was a nice balcony with 2 chairs and a small plastic table (they could have used a good scrub, but it was just build-up from being on the ocean). We were on the 2nd floor and had a great view of the ocean, dolphins, birds, and boardwalk. It was a quick and easy trip down to the beach. The staff was amazing! Very friendly and accomodating of our every request (extra pillows, plastic cutlery, offer to help with bags) and our many questions. We did not use the pool, but it also appeared clean and well kept. Yes, I'm sure that there are many hotels that are shinier and newer, with much higher price tags, but this little hotel was more than adequate. We plan to return this winter for whale watching and will definitely look here first for our stay.
Great. Hotel
Stayed here Labor Day weekend. Wow. What a great little hotel. They care about the customers. Always working to make the clean and the best possible. All the employees making sure everything is good. Great hotel to stay at in Virginia Beach.
Great staff, clean rooms, super affordable
I stayed here 8/14 - 8/16 and had a great stay. The best part of the stay is the staff. They are friendly, responsive, wore masks at all times and made the trip. The rooms are simple, clean and come with microwaves and fridges which is nice. I will definitely stay here again!
True Beach Hotel with Great People!!
The Econo Lodge on the Ocean is a great little hotel if you want to just come and enjoy being at the beach. There we feel closer to and more connected to the beach than most other hotels in VA Beach....and we've tried most of them. We are fairly local, and come to VA Beach often for weekend get-aways. The hotel itself is smaller and a bit dated, but the owners and staff do a great job of keeping it up, keeping it clean, and making the stay enjoyable. From check-in to check-out, everyone knows you, is excited you are there, and makes you feel very welcome. The rooms are just regular hotel rooms, nothing fancy, but kept clean and nice. We felt very comfy and safe in the rooms. The pool is decent. Not huge, but you have the ocean, so just a nice alternative for a quick dip. Hotel also has bikes you can use for free. Met a family at the pool there from Ohio. They said they have been coming from Ohio to VA Beach for 20 years, and every single year they have stated at the Econo Lodge on the Ocean. Must be pretty awesome for that type of dedication! The best thing about the Econo Lodge is your room being right there at the beach. Most VA Beach hotels you have to go through lobbies, up/down elevators, etc to get to and from the beach. Here on the first floor you just walk out your back door and you are there, and on upper floors just a quick set of steps and you are there. This is a great hotel for someone looking for a great value, clean room, great service, and just wanting to enjoy the beach. No frills other than the awesome team working there. If you want fancy, this isn't your spot. If you want to enjoy the beach and chill, highly recommend. And and extra shout-out to Artie at the front desk who was above and beyond friendly and positive. Thanks for a great stay and we'll definitely come back!
