A most amazing stay

Reviewed 29 november, 2021

What an amazing stay. A really comfortable and well appointed room. Perfect for a romantic getaway. Beautiful and tasteful decoration for Xmas. Superb building and even better landscaped gardens. Such a nice stay that we decided to book lunch as well. I would particularly like to commande Serafino, our waiter for his exquisite service, so refined and friendly. His Hungarian colleague was equally wonderful and helpful. All in all, an amazing stay. We will be back !

Rudely Anti Vegan

Reviewed 10 november, 2021

We had lunch reluctantly served to my husband and myself today at the Priory, Wareham. After we had sat down we asked for olive oil instead of butter, which was beautifully served at the side the bread basket. The waitress asked if we had dairy allergies, we advised her we were vegan. She whipped the basket away announcing that she would bring “milk free bread”. Fast heated pre-frozen rolls we dispatched to our table. Inedible and doughy. Then a huge sucking on teeth as to what the chef “might” be able to make for us. They announced that we had said we were vegetarian when we booked. I have been vegan for 7 years and am happy to say so and never declare myself vegetarian. At the end of it a delicious array of vegetables was served and we were very happy. Because the situation was resolved we then decided to book for a party of six people (friends are coming from Ireland next month and we thought they would enjoy the restaurant). When I asked the lady at the desk if they could check for availability she said (and I quote): “Are you the vegans? We do not serve vegan food, the chef made an exception this time, so we will not make a booking for you”. I was extremely angry and affronted. Despite being a beautiful property in an idyllic setting, the attitude of the staff was very lacking, with the exception of the waitress, who eventually took care of us and the wine steward, who seemingly was the only staff member to smile, chat and be accommodating.

We had lunch at the Restaurant today, and were a tad disappointed to be told there was nothing vegan on the menu, despite telling the hotel of our dietary requirements at the time of booking. However, the chef produced s delicious plate of veggies done in olive oil, and we were very happy. On leaving, we enquired about a booking in December, only to be informed “we don’t cater to vegans!” How pathetic. Even our local pub can russle up a vegan meal, but somehow doing vegetables is beyond the capabilities of this so-called chef. A very strange approach to customer service. A good meal ruined by a terrible attitude, and a potential regular customer turned away.

Disappointing afternoon tea

Reviewed 4 november, 2021

After an unfortunate start where we were literally and sarcastically told off by a member of staff as we walked in about closing the door(!) the tea itself was disappointing. We came hoping for an indulgent treat but were given dry scones and "child packed lunch" sandwiches. After being informed when we booked that they were full the previous day, we were the only guests at the serving so did wonder whether we just got the left overs? Although pleasant and attentive, the staff made it clear from the start that we needed to be done by a set time. Not the welcoming vibe or special treat we hoped (and paid quite a lot) for.

An enjoyable stay

Reviewed 3 november, 2021

Stayed two nights at the Priory Hotel in a Superior Double room which had a beautiful river view. Loved the hotel and the food was very good. The staff were very efficient although none were particularly “warm”. We had a few issues where we were barely acknowledged in the bar/lounge and other people were served before us but thankfully each time it was resolved before I got so impatient that I had to get up and ask to be served. Like many hotels in this covid era they have a fairly limited menu for dinner and it was identical for our two nights. We would have struggled if we’d been there a third night - particularly as I wasn’t happy with the way my fish was cooked on the first night and therefore had to advise my husband against it on the second. I think with such a limited menu it is reasonable to expect a hotel to vary it day to day. Annoyingly their lunch menu had some better choices but wasn’t available in the evening, Finally - and this isn’t the fault of the hotel - it was disappointing to find the bar & lounge deserted after dinner. We always enjoy sitting with a nightcap soaking in the hubbub and perhaps doing some people-watching. Here, before 10pm, everyone seemed to have gone to bed. Maybe if there had been someone behind the bar people would have been more tempted to stay but it did rather look as though it was shut. Despite the niggles we enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back.
