Junior suite - dreadful

Reviewed 26 october, 2021

We booked a junior sea view lower deck suite for 5 days to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday. It was dated, dull, dreary and dark. Nothing about it was acceptable. We asked for a room change and the male receptionist who dealt with us behaved in a sexist and unpleasant way when I spoke to him. Extremely disappointing. We were eventually moved to a more modern room. Do not book the junior suites - be warned!

This hotel is really great. I had attended for a yoga retreat and the staff was SUPER friendly, accommodating and cheerful. The room was comfortable- excellent view with a balcony that faced the sea and the bed was SO comfortable! Things to know: Adults only- massively relaxing. Most things are done via their app, which is great. Check in, room service, ordering food by the pool or the beach. I think there’s only one elevator- if you have trouble walking or bad knees you may want to ask to stay on the main level. The beach is amazing and you can almost always get a seat. The pool is great too, but surprisingly cold! Probably very nice in the summer heat, but at the end of September a little bracing. Most food is buffet style which might turn off some people looking for a fine dining experience, but it was plentiful and tasty and the staff is friendly and accommodating. I booked a spa treatment- excellent therapists, very nice quarters and you never feel exposed. This was my first pandemic travel and I felt surprisingly safe- most things are outdoors and masks are required indoors, and there are sanitizing stations and gloves for the buffet. All in all it was an excellent place to relax and recharge, enjoying beautiful sea views.

Mixed bag

The good things about the hotel are the friendly staff, the views, secluded private beach, and the good - reasonably priced - food. Unfortunately there are a few things which are a problem. The room we had was too small and the bed and the decoration were dated (which is an issue given its just been redecorated, or so we were told). The hotel is decorated with a mixture of local photos and Thai inspired features. Unfortunately its doesn't work, the grey and black furniture is not chic, its drab. The photos are black and white and a bit ugly. The Thai inspiration is a mistake because what tourists want is Crete, not Thailand. The main infinity pool is far, far too cold in October. Also the hotel has not made any effort to create an area where guests can mix. Yes you can sit outside but not in a way you can interact meaningfully (this may be a temporary covid issue, but Im unsure about that). The music is a bit of a mix but a good solid pianist might have been more appropriate. It would have been nice if the hotel has put on some events such as Greek dancing or someone telling mythical stories. Its unclear to me if the Greeks are aware of the resurgent interest in myths by intellectuals like Jordan Peterson. I got the impression they think its only for kids. The hotel is a bit of a walk from local shops and the town so you have to be prepared to walk or use taxis all the time.

Wonderful place to stay after no holiday during the pandemic

Taking the unusual step of writing a review while still here. We love travelling but not been for nearly 2 years because of the pandemic. Wanted a quality hotel and warm sunshine. Well, this hotel has everything. After a bit of a messy check-in process (log in via app) then the experience is sublime. We booked a suite with a shared pool and Ocean view and it's idyllic. Weather brilliant, pool lovely ( if a bit cold), great selection at breakfast and close to some fabulous local restaurants. Everyone so friendly. Haven't gone home yet but already want to come back! 🤔 Well done Minos Palace.

Great location

Reviewed 9 october, 2021

Stylish hotel in a spectacular location, we had a pool suite which was spacious, very clean and at times a bit unpractical set up (low sink, no hanger for towels) All pools were very cold, hardly any people swimming. The staff at breakfast was really nice, we found the receptionists not very attentive or friendly. Still a nice place to go back with some potential to improve - in both soft- and hardware.
