Unexpected Gem!
I expected this stay to be mediocre - a small lodge in a difficult-to-find area off the beaten path, with no in-room WiFi and limited amenities. Instead, I greatly enjoyed my three-day stay! I am already planning my next visit. THE GOOD: this small hotel is truly an Eco Lodge - my cabin was located on a rise with a view of the rain forest around me. My room had everything I needed for an amazing stay: the room was spotlessly clean; the bed was firm and comfortable; the shower looked like something you would expect in a five-star hotel in Las Vegas; the small kitchenette had everything I needed if I wanted to be self-sufficient; the floors and ceiling added to the rustic interior "feel" without actually being old; and finally, my balcony overlooked an unbelievable view of the surrounding forest and distant mountains. Best of all, the heavy-duty, no-bug-worry screen door allowed me to sleep with the sliding glass door open with the sounds of animals, birds, and wind rushing through the trees, without worry of critters joining me inside. It was sublime. I have never slept so well. Other amenities include a solar-heated Olympic sized pool under a wonderful wood-framed canopy; a tasty free breakfast with cooked-to-order food in the main building; and best of all, tailored walking paths through the property that allows you to feel you are in a forest (you are) just steps from your room. One of my best experiences was getting an acupuncture treatment in a special room, open to the forest, by a Dr. of Nutrition that also provides holistic Asian-based treatments. Wonderful. You are located close to San Carlos, which offers restaurants, nightlife, and grocery stores if needed. You are also not far from many of Costa Rica's most famous spots - volcanoes, waterfalls, and more. Frankly, in Costa Rica you are never far from either coast or many "must-see" areas! WHAT AN AMERICAN MAY NOT EXPECT: This lodge is not for someone expecting the typical US hotel experience. The only Wi-Fi is in the common area at the main area where breakfast is served - this is intentional to drive people off their phones and laptops and into nature and total relaxation. There is a TV in the room, I never turned mine on, and expect it was only local channels. The grounds are dark at night - limited lighting outside the rooms ensures a natural experience, and fewer bugs homing in on the lights (bring a small flashlight). The main building closes after dark but has an area out front for sitting and chatting – and connecting to Wi-Fi. Finally, there is no air conditioning - but this was never a problem, as I was out touring during the day, and the wind on this hilltop cools the area at night. With my screen open, I needed my covers even in the "summer season." OVERALL: A wonderful place to use a base to explore, to reconnect with nature, to meet the local community, and reconnect with yourself.
Johnny & Kim
This place was wonderful location to relax and to reflect and enjoy each others company. The pool was wonderful covered not directly in the sun simply wonderful. Our daily walks through the property peaceful and well maintained. The abundance of trees and flowers everywhere. My wife and I will definitely return to enjoy it again.
Wonderful hidden place!
We were on our way to La Fortuna and stayed at this hotel for one night. At first we could not really find the hotel, because you have to drive through a rather rough looking neighborhood to get to the hotel. When we arrived we were the ONLY guests! The guy working for the hotel only understood Spanish but we had a "hand&foot" conversation and it worked out fine. We had a lovely little room with all the amenities we needed. The garden area is just beautiful, you can listen to the frogs singing in the evening and watch the colorful birds in the morning. We had a very peaceful and pleasant stay at Finca Villa Tina Lodge.
