Fawlty towers
How any one can rate this hotel is difficult ! It has so much going for it and so much not ! The good side is the location to the ski slopes and the friendly owner, bar tender , receptionist , waitress , pool ( cover taker off ) and general " Jack or Jill, of all trades" The owner tries really hard and is very friendly but you have to feel sorry for her as she does try to keep the pool warn and the sauna warm , the steam room open and the spa working and warn but it is all to no avail as the people she asks to help do not have a clue and after being told the pool / spa/ sauna would be open t at 4 pm , each evening it never was ! Forget the steam room it was non existent, as was the bath plug and the central heating on one day! Plus one day the room wasn't cleaned as they thought we had stayed in the room all day ! However would I stay there again !! Most definitely ! She is lovely does not speak English but we ARE in Spain ! The food varied from good to bad ! The lamb we had the first night was the best we had tasted but the next night the meat was awful and tough ! Yes there is not much choice for breakfast but who wants indigestion when they go on the ski slopes ! The rooms were small but it is a very old area and very famous for that sort of architecture ! It wouldn't be the same if it was changed ! We love it there and the facilities never worked either , under the previous owner ! The pool is actually a little warmer than it was then ! I am giving the bad and the good but it is the best place to stay locally ,if you want to be close to the slopes and the price is good and cheap ! Well recommended although I have told you all the facts ! Typical Fawlty towers ! But well worth the experience !
“Terribly disappointing despite good location. Needs refurbishment!”
Good location close to the ski slope area, about 8km. When problems occurred the hard worked receptionist/ Housekeeper/ waitress did try her best to help but was obviously extremely stressed. I felt rather sad for her. Hotel is a typical "Spanish 3 star" which puts it nearer to a 2 on the international scale. The rooms are small and in urgent need of refurbishment especially the bathroom facilities. Our second night found us without hot water, so no shower, although we complained there was still no hot water the following morning so had to leave the hotel and travel home having not been able to shower....not pleasant. The breakfast was poor, no Black tea, no fresh fruit, no cooked option and only small pieces of fairly stale French bread to toast yourself. With some sliced ham and cheese plus croissants. We figured this was all aimed at preventing guests from making up packed lunches to take out to the slopes. The restaurant didn't open until 20:30 in the evening so food generally didn't arrive until 9pm and was Luke warm. Starter jacket potato warmed in a microwave and cold in the centre, soup barely warm. We sent the main course back to be reheated as it was so bad. We didn't wait around for a dessert! The whole service seemed to deteriorate on the second night despite the hotel emptying of its weekend guests? ........disappointing as this was booked for my husbands birthday.
Awlful Hotel!
This was my first and last visit to this hotel! Not value for money. The room was small, there was no hot water, the swimming pool was green and the food terrible! Staff certainly lacking in customer service skills too!
Disappointing return
Been using this hotel for 14 years and always been very happy. Noticed last year that standard had slipped.... discovered that new owners had taken over, we put it down to teething problems and returned this year. We were hugely disappointed. The indoor pool was green and freezing cold, children were unable to use it. The jacuzzi was cold. For the whole weekend the whole hotel had no hot water, so we had to have COLD showers (baths have no plugs, incase if you fancied a cold one!) Fridge in our room didnt work. The standard of food in the restaurant was poor, service was slow AND then to add insult to injury the prices appear to of nearly doubled....Please triple check the TOTAL price when you book. Felt cheated and will NEVER return to this hotel.
The Closest Hotel to the Slopes
Hotel La Vega is inexpensive and perfectly adequate if you want to be as close as you can get to Valdelinares (15min drive). The hotel itself is comfortable, clean and friendly. Only one staff member spoke any English and when they realised we were vegetarian, they kindly created a special menu for us for dinner that night. The grilled veg were great! The pool was a little on the cold side, both our boys had blue lips by the time they got out! The village itself is a ghost town mid-week, there are only a handful of restaurants and most don't serve dinner until 8-8:30 which is difficult with exhausted children. We couldn't find a shop of any sort other than ski-hire so if you're self-catering, come prepared!
